Abstract

Translating an L1 (source text) into a target language would be a daunting task and time-consuming work for students who are non-native speakers. It might be more challenging when the L1 text is a discipline specific text. Many words and specific terms are difficult to translate, and often unintended meanings emerge during this translation process. Although there has been considerable research on the translation studies, there has been still little study on how translators cope with the challenges. To fill this void, this case study is aimed to describe techniques employed by students majoring pharmacy in translating direction for use texts from English into Bahasa Indonesia. Adopting Vinay’s and Darbelnet’s (1996) translation methodology, this research is aimed to describe the translation process that students already undertook in order to produce texts that appropriately work in a particular social context. There are four drug brochures taken as samples of analysis. These texts are students’ assignment for the topic of translation. This is a group work and part of the whole assessment. The study provides detailed and specific examples of how students tackle the challenges of translating discipline specific texts into equivalent languages that are socio-culturally and linguistically acceptable. HIGHLIGHTS: Translating a text is not simply to transfer the meaning of source text into the target text, but it requires the translator to have sufficient discipline specific knowledge. The challenges and problems faced by translators would be different from one another since each discipline specific text requires different strategies.

Abstract

This study reviews recent evidence concerning childhood bilingualism: what is the optimal age to begin learning a second language? Acquiring a first language is mainly unconscious and begins at birth. A bilingual child is one who has acquired a second language simultaneously or is acquiring a second language sequentially. Research evidence confirms that second language acquisition should begin as early as possible. It requires a holistic approach in which learners are immersed in the sounds and daily experiences of the second language, much in the same way as the first language was acquired. It is during the very early years of a child’s life that brain development is most receptive to acquiring linguistic competence in one or more additional languages. Evidence is clear that younger-age learners will have better accents and a more diversified vocabulary than those who are older. Thus, creating an immersion-like environment is essential for schools which aim to develop sequential bilinguals. Elements for successful English as a second language programmes are identified, with supporting research evidence. HIGHLIGHTS: When young bilinguals ‘borrow’ words from the other language could be regarded as being very resourceful, not confused. Children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds may lack certain linguistic experiences in terms of vocabulary size, and lack of exposure to books, conversation practice, or first-hand life experiences.

Abstract

2013 curriculum of Indonesia has amended English as an extra-curricular or a local content subject at primary schools. There are no standards to achieve and the teachers have to find the appropriate strategies to its delivery. It triggers the teachers’ lack of confidence in terms of content and methods. On the other hand, cognitive domain with the test as achievement standard regardless providing the experience of using the language for communication has been practiced. Integrating the thematic units of primary schools’ thematic lesson seems possible to carry out because the teacher can use its themes or sub-themes as a topic for Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). This exploratory case study employs in-depth interviews with three teachers from well-established schools using a semi-structured interview, observations for field notes, and focus group discussion. The findings reveal that all teachers developed the materials for their teaching based on the regular class thematic lessons and a book provided by the local government. As for teaching practice, they have implemented the CLIL principles although they did not realize it. Ultimately, CLIL adaptation is appropriate for TEYL as that representative area in as much as teacher’s English language proficiency and pedagogical competency are upgraded. Highlights: Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL) should provide the young learners opportunities to use the English language contextually. Soft CLIL does not require a high level of achievement in language but it provides the students simple language instruction with simplified materials.

Abstract

The study looks into the possibility of bringing student-generated comic as a collaborative project into the Extensive Reading program. It focuses on the students’ preferences and difficulties in creating a student-generated comic based on their perceptions. For this purpose, the study involved 30 students of the English Education Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo, who had taken the Extensive Reading program. The questionnaire is employed to assess their perceptions. The results of the study show that creating a student-generated comic is a pleasurable doing, an exciting activity, and a fun way for the EFL learners to study English. Moreover, students consider that student-generated comics can improve students’ language production creativity, contribute an educational resource for other students, and arouse their creativity. Concerning the development of students’ language proficiency, creating comic corresponds to the novel they have studied, affects their English fluency, and improves their writing skills. Astonishingly, only a few students believe that it is not easy to draw and illustrate a comic, compose stories and characters, and reveal the novel’s aspects into a comic. HIGHLIGHTS: Creating a student-generated comic collaboratively as one of Extensive Reading activities is enjoyable, and it is a motivating activity for the students to learn and practice English. Generating the comic collaboratively can affect students’ English fluency, understand the novel’s content quickly, and improve their writing skill. It is important for combining the curriculum of adult ESL with educational comics to promote the students’ skills and concepts involved in a broad range of literacy.
