Abstract

Office Administration students at VHS require English reading-writing materials to assist them acquiringcompetencies as stated in SKNNI. The present study aimed to evaluate the existing materials and seektheir relevance to SKNNI. The evaluation involved three English textbooks entitled Bahasa InggrisSMA/MA/SMK/MAK for Grade X, XI, and XII through checklist method. The authors used an evaluativechecklist adapted from Cunningsworth (1995) and focused on three aspects — learning objective, language content, and text type. The results show that learning objectives in all assessed textbooksmismatch with the competencies defined in SKKNI. Likewise, language content (grammar andvocabulary) covered in those textbooks is irrelevant with language knowledge needed as the basics toattain the competencies in SKKNI. Then, the textbooks provide the kind of texts which are distinct fromthose required by SKKNI that must be business documents. Although one topic in textbook for GradeXII relates to office administration (about job application), it remains insufficient. To put it simply, thefindings indicate that the three textbooks do not correspond to the national standards, so they areinappropriate for Office Administration students. Therefore, designing reading-writing materials basedon SKNNI is the future action in response to the results of this study.

Reading is essential in every subject. Reading also has a relationship with the students' achievement. This study is aimed to investigate whether or not there is (1) a significant correlation between reading attitude and reading comprehension achievement, (2) a significant correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension achievement, (3) a significant correlation between reading attitude and reading motivation, and (4) any correlation between predictor variables and the criterion variable. The study was a correlational study with Pearson-product moment correlation. The sample of this study were 95 eleventh graders of upper secondary school. Cluster random sampling technique is used in this study. Questionnaires of reading attitude, reading motivation, and reading comprehension tests are given. The questionnaire result reveals that the reading attitude was negative, and reading motivation is medium. Abstract

In this study, the researchers implemented brain-based learning (BBL) model and the use of the students’ high order thinking skills (HOTS) in the teaching and learning of writing. The aim of this study was to know whether or not there was an interaction effect between teaching models and students’ HOTS on the students’ writing ability. This experimental research used a 2x2 factorial design. Two classes of the fourth semester of English Language Department became the population and the sample in this study. The students in both of the classes were divided into the students with high and low HOTS. Then, the experimental class was taught writing by using BBL and the control class used guided writing. Next, the data got from the writing test were calculated by using a two-way ANOVA. The result showed that Fo interaction (10.160) was higher than Ft (4.15) at the level of significance α=0.05. It means that there was an interaction effect between teaching models and students’ HOTS on the students’ writing ability. The mean score of the students with high HOTS taught by using BBL (82.44) was the highest. This brings to the conclusion that BBL and HOTS had significant interaction effect on the students’ writing ability. The skills of analyzing, evaluating and creating the students whose HOTS was high worked well when having discussion. The students’ relaxed feelings in BBL class could help them to get information about what to be written in their texts more and more by having discussion.
