Abstract

The introduction of Islam in the Sultanate of Buton has brought about changes in the social, political, and even intellectual aspects of the sultanate. This is observable in the thought of local scholars who try to blend Islam and local culture. One of these figures is Sultan Muhammad Idrus Kaimuddin (1824-1851). The thought of Sultan Muhammad Idrus Kaimuddin finds the essence of its concept of manners or etiquette in the teachings of the ancestors in Bula Kabanti Malino and several works of Sultan Muhammad Idrus Kaimuddin. The guidance of the public and court authorities in the Sultanate of Buton was basically and mostly coming from the teachings of Islam. Thinking in terms of ethics, morals, manners, the advice of Sultan Kaimuddin has deep horizons of knowledge and thought. The magnitude of the influence of Islam in the thought of Muhammad Idrus Kaimuddin evidently works, which proves that the process of acculturation between Islam and Butonese culture runs well. The acculturation between Islam and Butonese culture was essentially a formation process of Butonese civilization centered in the palace and passed on to Buton society in general, through the process of cultural dialogue between Buton (Wolio) and Islam.

Abstract

This article discusses the reason of wearing veil among Indonesian Students in public schools. It is found that that veil in public schools has three different elements. First of all, veil is identified as the religious awareness among the students. It symbolizes the religious commitment and the strength of local values. The proliferation of veiled women indicated the Islamic movement in Indonesia. Secondly, veil may be identified as the medium of maintaining political interest. The policy of making veil compulsory for students and as school uniform can ignore the pluralism in Indonesia. This policy also leads to make veil as a symbolic than substantive teaching. Finally, veil in public schools should be considered as the social control for the female students in the public sphere. It does not merely focus on the symbolic sphere but it extends to develop the achievement of students

Abstract

This essay examines the emergence of HizbuutTahrirIndonesia (HTI) in the public sphere as an openly fundamentalist movement in the democratic era. HTI existed in Indonesia since the early 1980s. Its early presence was as a clandestine organization, because of the repressive state, but after 2000 it transformed itself into as an open Islamist movement. The fall of Suharto and subsequent democratic transition eradicated political restrictions, providing oxygen for HTI to publicise its religious beliefs and political program. This essay focuses on HTI’s view on democracy and nation state notion. It demonstrates that conceptually HTI is not in line with democracy concept and practically it refuses to participate in electoral politics. This writing argues that the presence of HTI with its stance anti- democracy may hamper the process of consolidating democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

The implementationof ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 will mark a new era of the relationship between countries in Southeast Asia. Proposed and agreed on during the Bali Concord II in 2003, the AEC agreement assumes a free flow of goods, investments and services among Southeast Asian countries in 2015. While the agreement provides more opportunities for the ASEAN countries and their people to enhance their economic development, some countries and people may find it more difficult compare to others to turning challenges into opportunities. One of the key factors is education. Education is the only way to improve the quality of human resources. In many Southeast Asian countries, Muslims make up the majority of the population, and hence the roles and responsibilities of Muslims are very significant in the region. Southeast Asian Muslims have a long history in providing education and human resources development to their communities. The continuing existence of madrasah, pondok or pesantren in almost every Muslim community indicates that education has been important part of Muslims’ lives. These institutions continue to exist amid rapid development of “international” or secular schools in many countries. The reason is that not only because most Muslims regard religious education remains important, but also because the ability of the institutions to adapt to the changing world. The realisation of AEC in 2015 provides opportunities and challenges to Islamic educational institutions. As indigenous institutions, Muslim schools could serve as the place where local values can be transmitted together with global and universal competencies.

Abstract

This article discusses how Pierre Bourdieu’s viewpoint on violence ontology and its relevance to violence phenomenon toward Indonesia’s society. According to Pierre that violence is form of domination to the human itself taking place subtly and not realizing that has become a form of habit in human life. Within the context of Indonesian, it can be involving violence between religious society in this country, or it can be specified over again into the society who embraces Islam. A new violence is actually a practice of domination conducted by the parties who think they are the only one true and majority in order to perpetuate the truth dominance of religion. In other words, the violence can only be understood as a form of domination to the other religions teachings, especially for the teaching or religion categorized as a minority religion or belief – in this case of Muslim and non- Muslim community.

Abstract

In the southern border provinces of Thailand, especially Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, there are two religious group of people, Thai Muslims and Buddhists. They live together, the state and Thai Muslims for a long time. The lack of knowledge in relation to understanding Muslims traditionally religious way of life, Muslims were forced directly or indirectly to act as Thai Buddhists by Thai government. This is one of the biggest conundrum Thai government should address and find an amicable solution urgently. Additionally, it is essential to be noted that historical perspectives of Pattani state is completely different from both side, this can lead to potentially political conflict in this area. Therefore, the government should rewrite a new paradigm by cooperating with all groups of people involve this conflict. If the majority of people could accept the recognition of difference, eventually this will result in peaceful coexistence.

Abstract

Before rapid developments of science, as we see and experience today, religion - related to beliefs, ideas, institutions, worship, social action, laws and norms, tools, and a holy book as its source – has been exist with its various plural forms. Followers of religion agree that the follower community retained, adhered to, and maintained spiritual values and life norms through creed, belief or faith, ritual worship, and certain habits. Inheritance of religious values through continuous living tradition across generation is a sign movement of religious traditions and culture by humankind since centuries ago. When there is a civilization, a religion will always follow it.

Abstract

Lack of concern towards ethics in politics is a major problem occurring in political practice. This, indeed, opposes the noble mission of politics as an art of state management. Hence, it needs a commitment to deal with political ethics as a behavior synergic with political acts. Moreover, it is necessary to consider that political ethics should ideally become political identity. Based on this, this article will discuss political ethics in contemporary Islam based on Mohammed Arkoun's perspective. Through content analysis of his works, this article will explore Arkoun's criticism toward established concept of "Madinah State" particularly in its relation to political ethics. According to Arkoun, epistemology in Islam should be considered as historical product which is merely applicable in a particular time. Product of thought may not be relevant in all conditions and space; therefore, it cannot be implemented without time constrains. Most of Muslim intellectuals firmly believe that Madinah State is an ideal model of Islamic state. In Arkoun's viewpoint, this belief may only be applicable during the Caliphate periods, approximately between 622 AD. and 1258 AD. He emphasizes that there are no Qur'anic or Hadith texts enforcing Muslims to obey the system of Madinah State. The most important one, in his opinion, is political ethics due to its very essential and universal entity. What has happened along the history of a state may be applied to improve and influence its established political system. In this context, political ethics is not merely about whether a state is either Islamic or secular, but it is about a state that consistently implements ethics in its political system.
