Abstract

English is now considered as global language, and with every single day its users are increasing numerously. The paper aims to investigate the international students’ attitudes towards English language focusing on a case of International students’ in India. As the central university, The English and Foreign Lnguages (EFL) University India has many international students from a wide range of countries. The attitudes are in language skills and in other perspectives. Upon  the  completion  of  the  collection  of  data,  these  were analyzed,  computed  and  tabulated  using  MS Excel.The study incorporates quantitative approach and has used close ended questionnaire to collect data from the participants. A total number of twenty students participated in the study. From the findings of the data, The research shows that they had  shown  a  positive  attitude  towards  use  of  English  or  an increase  in  the  use  of  English. They believed that learning needs process. Motivation and self-confidence are also main factors to master English comprehensively. They also believe that EFL University is the best place in India to study English intensively

Abstract

This research applies descriptive qualitative method aiming at knowing the format and model as well as the  motivating and resisting power of English learning at Ta’mirul Islam Male Boarding School Surakarta. From observations and interviews, it is found that there is as direct learning strategy using teacher-centered approach. This learning strategy is even more detailed by the ‘army method’ learning model which emphasizes high discipline and teacher authority as well as direct method which stresses on the teacher instructions. The learning model of the school follows behavioristic patterns that emphasizes on customization in language skills. It is combined with army method patterns that treat students with rewards and punishments. The motivating power of the English learning process at the boarding house is the availability of facilities, bi’ah lughowiyah or the environment that supports the students to be able to speak and write in English. Meanwhile, the ressisting factor is the ignorance of most students toward the punishments given by the authority.

Abstract

Karang Taliwang is one of regions in the district of Cakranegara, Kota Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Here live three language communities. They are Sasak, Bali, and Sumbawa. Each of them use their own language to communicate with their community but do code mixing when communicate with other language communities. Their choice of language depends on some factors among other things; domain, place, situation, participant and purpose as said by Fishman,” who speak, what language, to whom, when, and to what end”

Abstract

Humanism as a paradigm is often declared as an alternative approach to education. This paradigm is, in fact, an approach developed in the field of literature and education. The objective of this study is to determine the values underlie the epistemology of the humanistic education theory. Epistemology is the elements that are abstract or implicit. To recognize the epistemology of humanism education theory, this study examines the elements of basic assumptions, values and models of the theory. The results show that the assumptions promoting the theory have similarities with the basic assumptions of the phenomenological epistemology. It sees humans as creatures with consciousness and knowledge for what he did. Thus, every human’s behavior or action is conducted in purpose. In humanistic education theory, meaningfulness and usefulness of the learning process are determined by the learner, not the educator. For that reason, learning design and methods should be developed by the participants based on the needs of the learners. Therefore, the theory does not provide a model for an individual learning process. Thus, it can be concluded that the theory of humanism education rooted from phenomenology epistemology.

Abstract

This study is an application of Freud’s psychoanalysis to Toni Morrison’s Beloved. It is aimed at describing the major cause of Sethe’s doing Mercy Killing, the way of Mercy Killing and the impacts after doing Mercy Killing. The findings of the study show that Sethe’s Mercy Killing is caused by her past experience when she was a slave. The problems result from the disharmony of the id, ego and superego in Sethe. This study reveals that finally Sethe’s superego controls her personality which leads her to kill her baby. Sethe’s mercy killing happens because of some causes which lead her to do mercy killing.

Abstract

The study of stylistics has grown wider in literatures and in linguistics. Stylistics provides linguistic features that support the interpretation of certain text so that the investigation becomes comprehensive. This research aims at finding stylistic features of the narrations of the prologue and epilogue of Mata Najwa talk show in an episode entitled Pejabat Pemburu Rente. Using ear-catching word arrangements, the prologue and epilogue successfully attract the audiences’ attention and, thus, the talk show becomes one of the most popular TV show in Indonesia. The stylistic features observed in this research are based on deviation and parallelism. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The data source is Mata Najwa show with the sub-title Pejabat Pemburu Rente, while the data are the prologue and the epilogue of the show. The analysis shows three features in the prologue as well as in the epilogue: figurative language, sound repetition and word repetition.

Abstract

Literacy refers to a set of skills for being literate of texts existing in society. There are many kinds of information penetrated among us. Being literate is now not only just represented by reading and writing as we simply do every day orthographically. It remains on basic literacy. This one itself has been improved for considering economic development by adding arithmetic skill. Literacy, with those language competences, considers its contribution for society in this modern age. It is considered as resource to reflect quality of each person. This functional literacy takes us for being functionally beneficial for surrounding environment.  For dealing with the information around us which is massively spread, critical literacy should be optimized to make sense and take stance. In higher education context like university, scientific literacy is highly required to apply the subject for phenomena in the society. Along with types of literacy, how are their contributions on society? Being capable on multiple literacy levels is believed as the right way for familiarizing social phenomenon so that literate people have more chances to get possibilities for themselves up to strengthen citizen involvement for their nation as well. Literacy is finally constructed from optimizing each citizen on nation’s development.

Abstract

This research aims to explains the meaning of some specific address terms such as kiai, gus, ning, kang, etc. which are obligatorily used  on pondok pesantren in Jombang. This study discusses the classification and the meanings of address terms in pesantren as well as pesantren and Javanese cultural perspectives on the terms. This descriptive-qualitative research applies emic approach. The result shows that there are 15 address terms in pesantren, namely kiai, nyai, gus, mas, ning, bapak, ibu, mbak, kang, cak, ustadz, ustadzah, abah, abi, and umi. These distinctive address terms aim to honor the kiai, teachers, kiai’s and teachers’families, and santri. Pesantren’s view posits that respecting teachers, teachers’ family, and fellow santri is a pace to get barokah and manfaat (benefit) of science, the santri’s ultimate goal and their destination of seeking knowledge. Meanwhile, Javanese cultural persepective argues that this respect indicates syncretism between Javanese and Islamic culture. The respect to kiai is influenced by the respect to begawan. On the other hand, santri’s attitude refers to cantrik. Different tributes between teacher and kiai are influenced by Javanese culture. It indicates the existence of different obligations and rights in pesantren which impact on the stratification at pesantren. The stratification at pesantren can bedivided into three classes; namely nursery class (kiai and his family), teacher class, and santri class.

Abstract

This research was aimed at identifying  the uses of disfemism on BBC Online news texts at the level of grammatical units and describing their backgrounds as well as analyzing their forms and qualities of translations, particularly from the aspect of acceptability in Indonesian language. The method used for analysis was content analysis with disfemism on BBC Online news texts as the object of analysis. The data were in the forms of linguistic units of the news texts containing disfemism. The data were then analyzed by using referential comparison technique with semantic and translation approach to understand the meanings of disfemism and pragmatic comparison for analyzing the backgrounds.The results show that the grammatical units of disfemism on BBC Online news texts were at the levels words, phrases, and clauses. In addition, no significant change of form was found in the translations.There were found 10 different reasons underlying the uses of disfemism on BBC Online news texts. Meanwhile, dealing with the acceptability, most of the translations of disfemism can be counted as acceptable

Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the short-short story (al-qisah al-qasirah jidan) of Morocco in Ha’al-Hurriyah anthology by Muhammad Said ar-Rihani by using structural approach. This approach is selected to show the text objectively. This paper analyzed the short short story using the theory of Rimmon-Kenan naratology and Qalyubi stylistics. It tried to find out how the storytelling models in the short-short stories entitled Haitsuma Kana al-Zulmu Fatsamati Watani and Ghidza’ al-A’mal in the anthology are and how language style are used in both short-short stories. The results of this research show that for storytelling, both short-short stories uses narrative and dialogue technique, each of which lead to the centralization and compaction of the theory. Both short-short stories contain structural aspects of metaphorical repetitions whereas in the imaginary realm, there are characteristics of title selection, the use of majaz (metaphor) and itnab (hyperbole).
