Abstract

Dexamethasone is a widely used synthetic glucocorticoid by people. However, the use of high doses of the long term can affect the heart. The heart is the place where drugs and other toxic substances are metabolized. However, specific studies in examining the effect of dexamethasone on heart’s histopathology are rare. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant which can help the body to eliminate oxidative stress in cells. The aim of this study is to know the effect of vitamin E in rat’s (Rattus norvegicus) heart given dexamethasone. This study used 25 male rats (Rattus norvegicus), which were two-three months old and 200-300 g of weight. Rats were grouped into five treatment groups and five repeats. Rats adapted for a week, and furthermore, rats were given treatments for 14 days. In the P0 treatment group rats given only food and drink (negative control). Treatment group P1, P2, P3, and P4 were given dexamethasone 0.13 mg/kg by subcutaneous injection. Vitamin E administrated orally with the following doses: P2 (100 mg/kg), P3 (150 mg/kg), and P4 (200 mg/kg). After 14 days, then the rats were necropsied to collect the heart. Next, the heart was put into Neutral Buffered Formalin (NBF) for fixation, then stained with hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE). The observed parameters were inflammation and necrosis of the heart. The result showed administration of 200 mg/kg of vitamin E had highly significant (P<0.01) to repair of rats’ heart tissue which were given 0.13 mg/kg of dexamethasone via subcutaneous injection rather than 200 mg/kg of vitamin E. The conclusions of this study are vitamin E can against heart damage due to side effects of dexamethasone.

Abstract

The purpose of this study to assess changes in hematological profile (leucocyte differential, total leukocytes and platelets) mice with oral administration of jamu temulawak. 25 male miceaged 12 weeks, each weighing 30 g were divided into five groups and five replications. P0 suchdoses given as a control (0 mg/100 g), P1 (10 mg/100 g), P2 (20 mg/100 g), P3 (30 mg/100 g), andP4 (40 mg/100 g). Differential leukocytes, total leukocytes and platelets of mice, using the SysmexHematology analyzer showed oral administration of jamu temulawak was highly significant  to total leukocytes and significantly  on lymphocytes of mice, whereas the total platelets, eosinophils, neutrophils, basophils and monocytes showed no significant difference, but the effect is happeningis within normal limits. Thus giving jamu temulawak can be used to maintain animal healthassociated with hematologic profiles.

Abstract

Syndromic surveillance is an alternative surveillance system which can potentially detectanimal disease outbreaks in the early stages. Although syndromic surveillance haslimitations for the detection of sub-clinical and specific diseases, the method has the abilityto detect disease outbreaks rapidly including clinical emerging issues. In addition, syndromic surveillance is a suitable surveillance tool that can be applied in developingcountries since it is a low-cost surveillance method and is an option for poorly-resourcedveterinary services.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate Indonesian stray cat (KLI) eyes by transpalpebrae B-mode ultrasound imaging. Eight healthy adult stray cats with 3.0-4.0 kg body weight were underwent of eyes ultrasound scanning without anesthesia or sedation. Linear ultrasound transducer with 7.5-15 MHz of frequency and ultrasound-gel were adhered directly to palpebral on the closed eyes. The results showed that the internal architecture of eyes was visible in different echogenicity according to the constituent of eyes structure. The sonograms with hypoechoic to hyperechoic parts of eyes were cornea, iris, cilliary body, suspensor ligament, sclera, and lens capsule. Moreover, anechoic parts of sonograms that having aqueous constituent were anterior chamber, posterior chamber, and vitreous humor. Based on the result, it can be concluded that B-mode ultrasound was able to assess the eyes through transpalpebral scanning.

Abstract

This study aims to prove that the Moringa leaf extract can improve renal histological structure of diabetic Wistar rats. Wistar rats were divided into six groups, so that each group has four replications. K1 as the positive control was not given the extract, K2 was administered the extract dose 100 mg/kg, K3 was administered the extract dose 200 mg/kg, K4 was administered the extract dose 300 mg/kg, K5 was administered the extract dose 400 mg/kg, K6 was administered the extract dose 500 mg/kg. The administrations of extract were held for five weeks. Rats then sacrificed and the kidneys were taken for the histopathology preparations with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining (HE). The observations indicate fatty degeneration and necrosis of the kidneys. Kruskal Wallis test results of all treatments showed p = 0.001 in both fatty degeneration and necrosis (p <0.05).

Abstract

Phatogenesis and bio-molecular of jembrana disease virus (JDV) only attack B-cell as a target, causing no produced antibody until 2-3 months post infection. Significantly increasing the number of CD8+ T-cells and significantly decreasing of CD4+ T-cells during acute phase affecting in decreased of CD8+:CD4+ ratio, that resulting in increasing sensitifity of animal to secunder infection. Nine bali cattle used in this study grouped based on infection status related to sample collected. Seven bali cattle infected by JDV isolate Tabanan/87 and two other cattle infected by BIV isolate R29, as a negative control (Non-JDV infected cattle). Samples tested of cellular identity and targeted cell, cellular immunity and cytokine expressions. Samples tested by flow cytometry and analyzed by variance. The result showed that the change of T-cell sub-population related to recovery of JVD infection strengthen the role of cellular immunity in a process of healing Jembrana disease. Evidences of enhancement of cytokine gene expressions produced by CDB T-cell mainly by IFN-g and IL-2, indicated the importance of those genes in an infection process and recovery.
