Abstract

Vocabulary is very fundamental aspect in language learning. Even, it becomes a key to master a language. The younger people learn the language, the faster they will master it. There are so many materials and media to gain vocabulary. One of them is by reading short story. In fact, it has many advantages when it applies as the media in language learning. This article conveys a study about how the use of short story to foster students’ vocabulary mastery in reading and how significant of short story as the media in language learning. This study uses the model of action research which involves thirty-eight students of MTsN 2 Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara as the subject of the research. It consists of three cycles, and each cycle has 4 meetings. The data are populated from tests (pre-test and post-tests). As the result, the use of short stories is able to increase the students’ psychological aspect and the classroom climate. The students are become more excited, enthusiastic, and active in the learning process. This then makes the classroom climate more alive, and it is finally able to foster their ability in vocabulary mastery in reading. Moreover, this study shows the significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery. At the end of the cycle, the students have met at least the minimum score of 7.00 standard of minimum completeness in the four areas of spelling, pronunciation, meaning, and the use of the words.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the ability of the first year students at SMP Neg. 10 palopo in mastering vocabulary. This research is descriptive research that will be analyzed qualitatively.  It describes the ability of the students of SMP Negeri 10 Palopo in mastering vocabulary. The population of this research will be the first year students of SMP Negeri 10 Palopo. Findings of the research in vocabulary test shows that most of students got score in poor classification namely 21 and 7 got  fairly poor. This fact implies that most of the student had low ability in vocabulary at SMPN 10 Palopo.  Only 1 student got fairly and one got fairly good. No one got good, very good and excellent.

Abstract

Teaching young learners is not an easy job. Then, vocabulary is central of language teaching and learning. Therefore, in this paper, the writer would like to elaborate some theories and practice of  teaching vocabulary by using English songs as the media. Dealing with the characteristic of young learner students, as it is stated by Murphy “teacher can use songs to teach vocabulary to students”.  Song is one of appropriate ways to create a good atmosphere to make teaching and learning process fresh and interesting

Abstract

The objective of this research were to find out the effectiveness of computer games in teaching vocabulary and to find out the students’ respons in teaching vocabulary using computer games.  This research used total sampling where all of population as sample, there were 30 students.This research used vocabulary test as instrument.  In collecting data, this research used some procedures namely pre test, treatment, post test and interview.  In pre test and post test used vocabulary test.  In pre test the students got score in poor classification namely 63,33 % and 36,66 % got fairly poor and mean score 3,0 (poor).  This is implies that the students had low vocabulary.  In post test, the students got score in very good classification namely 43,33 %, 30 % got good, and 26,66 % got fairly good and mean score 8,2 (good).  This is implies that the students got increasing in vocabulary after treatment.  In interview, all of the students gave positive respons of using computer games.  Based on the findings and discussion of the study, the writer concludes that the computer games is effective method in teaching vocabulary to the students at SDN 255 Mancani.

Abstract

This research was using CAR (Classroom Action Research) method in the teaching process. The objective of this research was to find out and collect the complete data of improvement in the listening skill of application of short film materials. The total number of population of second year was 139 students. There were 10 students as sample of research, they were from class IPA 1, IPA 2, IPA 3, IPA 4 and IPS 1 who joined interest based class as vocational interest academy of Curriculum 2013. The instruments are used to collect the data was multiple choice tests taken from the English subtitle of short films. The multiple choice tests were used to identify what kind of difficulties students face when they are listening. This research was conducted in the cycle 1.  After the data had been collected, it was found that the average mean scores of test 1 and test 2 were 5.80 and 6.60 with standard error of mean were 0.29 and 0.45 respectively. Median score of test 1 and test 2 were 5.50 and 6.33 respectively. The items are prone to innormal distributing of the data by looking at the standard deviation of test 1 and test 2. The variance score indicated that the data score of test 2 (2.044) was more variance than the data score of test 1 (0.844). skewness score of test 1 and test 2 in the cycle 1 which were 0.473 and 0.889 meant many low scores and few high scores. These meant that there were tended significant improvement of listening comprehension from performing test 1 and the test 2.

Abstract

This research was done to establish our qualities in teaching English as a foreign language. The writers used lesson study method in this research. Data sources that have been used were students’ questionnaires, students’ interviews, and lectures’ observation.The data result showed that the students had good positive responses for their academic learning, motivations, social behaviors and attitudes during the learning process by using peer tutoring as a lesson design. Moreover, the lecturer’s observers had good positive responses when they observed the process of learning.  The result of this research would be used as a reference that would change our habits in teaching English as foreign language. In the other words, the writers hoped that the teacher and the lecturer aware of their weaknesses in English teaching and they want to be observed by the other teachers and lectures when they teach in the classroom. The writer also hoped that the English student who read this research will get motivation to learn English in various ways. The students should be creative in learning English in order to master the English.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at describing self concept in English learning.  This will explore the concept of self concept and its importance for students in learning English. Self concept is one of way for students to  creatively in learning English. As a foreign language, English is not easy to learning by the students at the beginning of the study. For them, English is likely to be one difficulty in learning. The basic skills in English is the ability that requires the process of communicative competence, pronunciation, intonation, grammar and vocabulary improving. For the beginner is difficult to try. Naturally, they feel confused on the rule, like: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Some of students are afraid to be active in English. This phenomenon makes many students have low scores in English. The lessons must be relaxed and comfortable. So, by their self concept, the students will feel confident, they will not need to try hard to learn language. It will just come naturally and easily.

Abstract

There are still many critics criticizing output of English teaching and learning process in the classroom in all level of education. These critical opinions bring the teachers about trying a new approach of teaching to find an appropriate way to help the students mastering English. This study aims to present the implementation of Natural Approach in the process of teaching and learning in the classroom, especially in the third class of Samawi Islamic Elementary School. Multiple intelligence theory, as a new unique way to analyze the students’ intelligent and help them to maximize their ability, is also adopted in this study. This adoption result from a variety of ability that the students in the classroom have.

Abstract

Many different approaches dealing with language maintenance and shift can be found in the literature on minority languages. All weight the importance of the various factors influencing language maintenance differently. Their importance differs according to the situation in which a linguistic minority lives.  This paper tries to describe some theories on revitalizing the languages which are in endangered situation.  Some theories give consideration about how to save the languages.

Abstract

This research is aimed at (1) to find out the effectiveness of using role play to develop the students’ speaking skill (2) to find out the effectiveness of using video to develop the students’ speaking skill (3) to find out which one is more effective between the use of role play and video in teaching speaking.  This research used quasy experimental research.  It was conducted in ten meetings for each classes at Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang Makassar. 12 students for video class and 12 students for role play class. The instruments used in collecting the data was speaking test. In calculating the data, the researcher used SPSS Program version 20. The findings of this research show that (1) using role play is effective in developing the students’ speaking skill. It was proven by the significant difference between the students’ mean score of pretest and posttest. the mean score of the students in the pretest was 4.1 and the mean score of posttest was 9.5.  The t test was 11.19.  (2) Using video is effective in developing the students’ speaking skill.  It was proven by there was a significant difference between the students’ mean score of pretest and posttest. the mean score of the students pretest was 4.1 and the mean score of posttest was 9.5.  The t test was  10.72. (3).  Based on statistic analysis, it shows that using role is more effective than video in teaching speaking. The t test result of role play is greater than t test of video class. (11.19 >10.72)
