Abstract

Morphological variation in the fruit bat Megaerops spp. from five islands in Indonesia were examined. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses based on 19 skull characters and 12 external body chcracrers from 32 adult specimens were conducted to examine morphological variation.Multiple regression analysis on the three species examined indicated that there were not sexually dimorphic in both skull and external body characters. Between these species examined showed a marked distinction, as detected by using discriminant function analysis, Specimens of Megaerops from Bali and Lombok were not morphologically distinct from M. kusnotoi, while our additional Sumatran Megaerops were morphologically similar to M. w. albicollis.This is the first report of M. kusnotoi from Bali and Lombok, and for M. w.albicollis from Sumatra.Keywords: Taxonomic, morphology, distribution, Indonesia.

Abstract

Zeugophora javana sp, n. is described from West Java and placed in the subgenus Pedrillia. Diagnostic characters are given to separate Z. javana from other species in Australia.

Abstract

Drosophila elegans and D. gunungcola are closely related flower-breeding species, mainly exploiting Ipomoea flowers. Here, we report their territorial and mating behaviours in Ipomoea indica flowers at Cibodas, West Java, Indonesia. Flies of both species were almost absent from newly opened flowers in the early morning, and the number of individuals in flowers increased thereafter. Territorial males of these species fought against intruders of both species, but the frequency of fighting was significantly lower when intruders were heterospecific. Territorial males usually showed intensive courtship to conspecific females, but rarely to heterospecific females. Intensive courtship to conspecific females often led the females to desert the flowers, possibly because male’s courtship was annoying. The frequency of desertion was lower in D. gunungcola than in D. elegans. This difference may be attributable to the difference in sexual size dimorphism. Thorax size was smaller in males than in females in D. gunungcola but did not differ between the sexes in D. elegans, and therefore male courtship may be less annoying for females in D. gunungcola than in D. elegans. Copulation duration was shorter in D. elegans than in D. gunungcola, while the unreceptive period of females after copulation is shorter in D. elegans than in D. gunungcola.

Abstract

The taxonomy of social wasps of the poiistine tribe Ropalidiini in the eastern part of ti,e Lesser Sunda Islands (viz., Sumba, Flores and Timor as included major islands) was studied based mainly on specimens recently collected by ourselves and those deposited in the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Bogor. Parapolybia varia (Fabricius) and 11 species of Ropalictia are recognized ill tile region and their faunal characteristics are discussed. Nomenclatural changes included are: synonymy of Ropalidia laticincta floresinana van der vecht, 1962 underR. laticincta van der vecht, 1962; synonymies of Icaria nigroplagiata Cameron, 1900, R. mathematica binotata uau der vecin, 1941 and R. mathematica sumbaensis van der vecht, 1962, all under R. mathematica(Smith: 1860); revised status of R. socialis trimarulata van der vecht, 1962, and R. variegata dichrorna van der vecht, 1941, both being raised to species milk. New locality records are R. cyathiformis from Lombok and Flores Islallds, R. laticincta from Sobu (or Sawu) Island, R. rufoplagiata (Cameron) from Timor Island, and R. javanica van der vecht from Sumbawa island.Key words: Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae, Ropalidiini, distribution, Indonesia, synonymy

Abstract

The basic aim of this paper is to present a synthesis of the field work that we have been conducting on the positional behavior of orang-utans. The data have been collected from two study sites, of which one was at Ketambe, Gunung Leuser National Park, northern Sumatra and the other at Mentoko, Kutai National Park, eastern Kalimantan. We attempt to interpret positional behavior in an ecological context, and we evaluate several hypotheses, some of which can not be tested conclusively at the present time.

Abstract

Descriptions and taxonomic remarks are provided for ten species offreshwater oligochaetes (Annelida, Clitellata) from Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan, Indonesia. They include six naidines (Slavina appendiculata, Dero pectinata, Aulophorus hymanae, Branchiodrilus semperi, Pristina amphibiotica and P. osborni) and two tubificines (Limnodrilus claparedianus and L. grandisetosus) new to Indonesia. Abstract

Some species of calanoid copepods of the family Candaciidae inhabit surface or moderately deep waters, provide excellent materials for a zoogeographic investigation. Very few studies partaining to the taxonomy and biogeography of the members of the family Candaciidae in Indonesian waters have been previously carried out. The present paper deals with relevant informations on description and illustrations of 14 candaciid speciesfrom this region. All the previously known species have been found, one species Candacia ishimarui is new to science, and one C. guggenheimi Grice and Jones, 1960 is new records. A catalogue of all the nominal species (both valid species and synonyms) hitherto described from the world oceans, the zoogeography and a key of these species is discussed.
