Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: C-reactive protein (CRP), an acute phase protein and a marker of inflammation, has been associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. CRP has also been suggested tobe abnormal among migraineurs, possibly due to repeated vascular inflammation. Methods:This case-control study was conducted in Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital, Makassar,Indonesia, from June 2013 to January 2014. The aim of this study is to investigate the role ofinflammation in the pathophysiology of an ictal and interictal period of migraine.  A t otal  of  82patients participated in this study [16 males (19.5%) and 66 females (80.5%)]. The age of ictalperiod patients range between 19-57 years old (median 28, mean 29.54 ± 8.92) and interictalperiod patients range between 20-48 years (median 26, 28,90 ± 7,91). Results: This studyshowed mean hs-CRP level was significantly higher in the ictal period compared to interictalperiod of migraine (6.64 vs 1.87 mg/L). hs-CRP >3mg/L (high risk of cardiovascular event) wasmore common in ictal (78.3%) compared to interictal patients (21,7%), while hs-CRP <1mg/L(low risk of cardiovascular event) was more common in interictal (64.9%) compared to ictalperiod patients (35.1%) (OR=6.646). The contribution of hs-CRP to the ictal period of a migrainewas 17.2%. Conclusion: This study reinforces the view that inflammation processplays some roles in the pathophysiology of a migraine, especially in the ictal period. Keywords: hs-CRP, migraine, ictal.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Introduction:  Hypoxia and hypoperfussion is often found in neonates in an intensive care unit, however the clinical manifestations can only be found after cellular hypoxia and tissue perfussion disorder occur. Objective:  The study aims to find the ability of hyperlactatemia  status as a prognostic parameter  for infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Level IIIA. Methods : The research was a cohort prospective study using bivariat and multivariat analysis in NICU of Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital from June 2012 to April 2013. The analysis of the lactate level on samples that met the inclusion and exclusion criterias was done immediately after the neonates get into the NICU level IIIA. The capliary lactate level was measured using hand held analyser. The samples were distributed into groups of hyperlactatemia and without hyperlactatemia followed by outcome observation (death or good recovery). The number of subjects were 102 patients consisted of  69 males and 33  females.  Results : The study showed the incidence of hyperlactatemia at NICU leve IIIA was 53,9%. Hyperlactatemia ((p=0.000; IK95% 4.11-56.75.00; AOR 15.28) and chronological age <24 hours (p=0.014; IK95% 1.5037.04; AOR 7.47) was significant in determining the patient’s outcome. Conclusions: The study found that hyperlactatemia status and cronological age less than 24 hours were prognostic factors for patient’s outcome related to elevated mortality risk.   Keywords: Hyperlactatemia, NICU, Critically ill infants

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapy agent that has potent effects against various cancer types. However, DOX may elicit renal and liver toxicity. Objectives: To examine the role of vitamin C and vitamin E in reducing DOX renal and liver toxicity. Methods: Male rats (220-330 g) were assigned to one of the treatment groups. Group I was healthy controls. Group II was given DOX (20 mg/kg b.wt). Group III was given vitamin C (250 mg/kg b.wt) for 7 days prior to DOX injection. Group IV was given vitamin E (250 mg/kg b.wt) for 7 days prior to DOX injection. Group V was given oil vehicle for 7 days prior to DOX injection. Results: Vitamin C was effective to reduce both renal and liver dysfunction. However, vitamin E protective effects were only convincing in lowering DOX-induced renal toxicity but not liver toxicity. Both vitamins prevented elevated DOX-induced oxidative stress. Conclusion: Both vitamin C and vitamin E can help to reduce DOX toxicity in rat kidney, but only vitamin C that has clear benefits on improving liver toxicity after DOX injection. Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Cervical cancer is cancer occurring in the cervix uteri, which is mostly caused by an  infection by human papillomavirus (HPV). Women  diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer suffer emotional stress that can  lead to depression. This condition causes decreasing quality of life, decreasing level of serotonin, and an increase in depression score. Giving reality therapy to patients is expected to have  positive effects. Methods: The  research was con- ducted through  an experiment with pre-test and post-test design. The research samples were15 subjects taken through consecutive sampling from the Polyclinic of Obstetrics and Gynecol- ogy of Dr. Moewardi Hospital Surakarta starting in March 2015. The analysis of serotonin level was conducted in Prodia Laboratory. The experimental data  was analyzed using a t-test (α =0.05).  Results: The average level of serotonin of the research subjects after receiving reality therapy was higher (223.59 + 41.20)  compared to that  before the  therapy (82.77  + 27.02). From  the t-test analysis with p = 0.00,  it was found that  the  average depression score after receiving  reality therapy is lower (11:40  + 4.80)  compared that  before the  therapy (17:33  +5:52).  Conclusion: There  was a significant increase in the  serotonin level and  a significant decrease in the  depression score as the  effect  of reality  therapy given  to patients with ad- vanced cervical cancer. Keywords: Serotonin, depression score, reality therapy, advanced cervical cancer

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: It has been reported that obese children have a higher incidence of high ferritin and transferrin saturation than non obese children. The excessive iron stores can cause type 2 diabetes among patients with hemochromatosis, and this event could also occurred in obesity. Objectives: This study sought to know the level of serum ferritin and iron (ferrum) in adolescent obesity which could lead to initiate insulin resistance. Methods: Fifty five adolescence women (3 obese, 22 overweight, and 30 normal weight) involved in this study. The obesity was determined by body mass index (BMI), which are obese if BMI > 30 kg/m2; overweight if BMI 25-30 kg/m2; and normal weight if BMI < 25 kg/m2. The serum level of iron and ferritin assessed by kit analyzer with immunochemiluminescent methods, after drawing 2 ml blood from cubital vein. Conclusions: We concluded that serum ferritin and iron (ferrum) higher in obese group than overweight and normal weight group, although it was not statistically significance (Kruskall Wallis test p > 0.05). It was appeared that serum ferritin and iron tended to elevated following the raising of body mass index (BMI).  Keywords : obesity, serum ferritin, serum iron (ferrum)

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Angiogenesis plays an important role in the growth and metastasis of colorectal carcinoma, which is currently one of the targets of cancer therapy. It has been reported that the Endoglin (CD105) involved in angiogenesis and is a powerful marker for angiogenesis in colorectal carcinoma. Level Quantitative angiogenesis in peritumor and an intratumor area is important to know because it is closely related to the micro-environmental factors that influence the occurrence of cancer angiogenesis. The goal of this study to analyze the distribution pattern of angiogenesis in colorectal cancer by comparing the distribution of angiogenesis in peritumor and intratumor areas between well, moderate and poorly differentiated colorectal carcinoma, and between metastasis and non-metastatic colorectal cancer. Methods: This study analyzed fifty samples of resected adenocarcinoma colorectal. Angiogenesis was assessed by the immunohistochemical method using a primary monoclonal antibody Endoglin (CD105). Positive expression of CD105 was assessed through the CD105 protein expression in neovascular endothelial cells, while the distribution pat- tern of angiogenesis assessed by counting the positive expression of CD105 protein in hot spots by using the MVD (microvessel density) in the peritumor and intratumor areas and then performed statistical analysis. Results: There is a significant difference between the quantitative level of an- giogenesis in peritumor and intratumor areas of well (P<0.01), moderate (P<0.01) and poorly (<0.05) differentiated adenocarcinoma. The significant difference between the quantitative levels of angio- genesis in peritumor and intratumor areas of non-metastatic colorectal cancer (P<0.01) and lymph node metastases (<0.05) was found, but not in colorectal cancer with liver metastasis. Conclu- sion: Angiogenesis pattern is more concentrated in peritumor compared to intratumor areas. This showed the role of stromal cells in-angiogenesis. There is significant expression between angio- genesis in peritumor and intratumor areas. Keywords: Angiogenesis, Colorectal cancer, Endoglin (CD105)
