Abstract

This research aims to explore students’ difficulties in resolving Nonhomogeneous 2nd Order Ordinary Differential Equations with initial value problems. The method that can be used to solve this equation is the undetermined coefficient and the Laplace transformation. This research is used descriptive method. The subjects of this study were 73 students in the second year of the Mathematics Education. Data is collected through tests and interviews. Data were analyzed descriptive qualitative. The results of data analysis show that in undetermined coefficient method, students difficult in determining the particular solution of non-homogeneous second-order ordinary differential equations. This is due to student errors in the first step especially in determining the characteristics equation. Whereas, for the Laplace transformation method, students most difficulties are in the step of solving the subsidiary equation. This is due to the weakness of students in completing arithmetic operations in the form of fractions and partial fractions.

Abstract

The synthesis of some empirical researches revealed that the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) has a heterogeneous effect size on the mathematical critical thinking skills (MCTS) of primary school students in Indonesia. However, it seems that no researches were investigating the causative factors of the heterogeneity of primary students’ MCTS through PBL. Therefore, this meta-analysis research was employed to examine three potential factors that were PBL class capacity, PBL treatment duration, and mathematics topic predicted as the causative factors of the heterogeneity of primary students’ MCTS. The Q Cochrane test by using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) application was used to examine these potential factors. The synthesis of ten primary studies published in 2015 – 2020 and indexed by Scopus, Google Scholar, Sinta, and Web of Science, showed that PBL treatment duration and mathematics topic were the significant factors causing the heterogeneity of primary students’ MCTS. However, PBL class capacity was not a significant factor causing the heterogeneity of primary students’ MCTS. Thus, primary school mathematics teachers should consider PBL treatment duration established and mathematics topics selected in cultivating primary students’ MCTS by implementing PBL.

Abstract

According to some studies on school student, the application of the STAD method in some subject can improve critical thinking ability. However, according to other studies, STAD in some subject for school students cannot improve critical thinking ability. This study, hence, aims to discover the impact of the application of STAD in improving critical thinking ability, especially in mathematics course for university students. The experiment was carried out in a quasi-experimental design, especially the pretest-posttest non-equivalent group type. The findings of this study indicate that the application of STAD in mathematics learning can improve critical thinking ability. The advantages of using STAD can be seen from the increase in critical thinking ability, both abilities in the low, medium, and high categories. This study also confirms the findings of other studies that the application of cooperative and problem-based learning methods is effective in improving critical thinking ability. However, in contrast to other studies that reveal the benefits of STAD can be obtained after a long time of application (9 weeks - 8 months), this study shows that the benefits of STAD can be obtained in a relatively short time. This occurs because the treatment in the experimental class meets the criteria set by the experts, and uses three important structures proposed by experts, too. This research, therefore, has implications for the need to use problem-based cooperative learning methods.
