Abstract

Abstract The enhancement of teacher’s quality is crucial, and it remains a challenge in Indonesia. As an effort to achieve a better education quality, a comprehensive reformation of the education system has to be done, especially regarding the aspect of teacher’s quality. The cultural uniqueness may impact the different values of competent teachers, make it typical to define a competence teacher from one place to another. Up to the present, there have been wide variations of the instruments used to measure teacher competence, but most are developed with regards to the western culture. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a culturally-sensitive instrument to assess teacher competence based on the situation of the targeted country where the teacher resides. High schools students in Jakarta and greater area participated in this study. Validity and reliability testing were performed to confirm the psychometric property of Teacher Competence Questionnaire (TCQ). It is concluded that TCQ is a valid and reliable instrument to measure teacher competence. Several limitations related to this study are discussed. Keywords: teacher competence questionnaire, teacher evaluation, quality of education

Abstract

Abstract — Working is a stage in the path of life each human will pass. However, during employment, a person may experience pressure and if the pressure persists, the situation may tend to lead to burnout. Burnout is a syndrome of emotional fatigue due to excessive working demands. The effect of burnout is not only experienced physically, but also psychologically. Burnout is caused by numerous factors, both external and internal. Internal factor includes emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study was to observe and identify the correlation between emotional intelligence and burnout tendency of employees in the marketing department. This study adopted 104 samples and data are collected through questionnaires. Based on the statistical tests conducted, significant correlation exists between emotional intelligence and burnout tendency of employees in the marketing department. The correlation was negative, implying that the higher the emotional intelligence employees have, the lower the burnout tendency they may have, and vice versa. Abstrak — Bekerja merupakan sebuah tahap yang pasti akan dilalui oleh setiap manusia. Abstract

As one of the scientific methods, literature review is distinguished by its ability to generate conclusions in the highest level of confidence as it relies on the analysis of numerous published empirical studies. Nevertheless, conducting a literature review on the Indonesian databases is challenging because there are wide ranges of synonymous variants for a conceptual terminology, which are mostly caused by the literal translations of the terminology from its English origin. This commentary paper highlights the fundamental challenge in conducting literature review studies using Indonesian published papers, particularly the challenge resulting from the abstinence of a guideline for terminology translations, and offers a strategy to mitigate the issue by emphasising the roles of psychological consortia and associations.

Abstract

Most studies in psychology are built on the evidence-based paradigm, which heavily relies on the objectivity (positivism) as well as integrity and competency of the researchers (constructivism) to interpret the reality. Such a paradigm is often implemented in a reductionistic manner, where all studies in psychology have to employ analysis of primary data. This reflects what currently occurs in Indonesia where most scientific outlets in psychology seem to put much interest on manuscripts that report quantitative and/or qualitative study. In this editorial note, I introduce various possible alternative methods to justify the truth and utility values apart from empirical analysis. This note also informs various practical strategies of the journal to accommodate publication of peer-reviewed, non-empirical work for rapid and accurate dissemination of new knowledge in the field of Indonesian indigenous psychology.

Abstract

Ethical evaluation is an integral part of the research process. While at the international level, ethical assessment is required for the majority of psychological studies involving direct data collection on human subjects, such assessment is largely optional in the Indonesian context. Ethical aspects, which are essential in research, are often trivialized and thus ignored. In this article, the author specifically focuses on the importance of ethical evaluation in psychological research proposals, by citing the controversial Little Albert experiment, describing the benefits of ethical evaluation for the participants, researchers, and the dignity of the profession. Lastly, the article formulates holistic recommendations for the benefit of developing psychological research in Indonesia.

Abstract

Pleasure takes part as an underlying motivation in decision making activities, including when committing conventional and reckless behaviors. Whereas previous studies have confirmed that individuals with higher level of religiosity commit less reckless behaviors, little attention is given to further identify their pleasure perceptions toward performing such actions. This study was intended to fill the gap by demonstrating if higher level of religiosity among emerging adults would change perceptions of pleasure, which in turns reduce the likelihood of performing reckless behavior. A total of 441 data of emerging adults (Mage= 20.69; SD = 1.71) living in Jakarta and Tangerang were gathered. The survey found that there exists a negative influence of religiosity towards perception of pleasure in emerging adults’ reckless behavior. This study suggests that in attempt to reduce reckless behavior, practitioners could use indirect religious approaches, including: adopting religious morality, providing a supportive community, and practicing relaxing rituals.

Abstract

Religion plays a major role in the lives of most Indonesians. While most religions favour marriage, little is known regarding how religion shapes the singleness experience, especially from the Indonesian perspective. The study aims to explore whether and how religion constructs the meaning of singleness and contributes to the quality of life of Indonesian unmarried individuals. Multistage mixed-methods study was employed to answer the research questions through two stages. Stage one was an online survey to 635 participants (Mage = 31.49; SD = 5.49) across three groups (single, single in a relationship, and married). Stage two utilised interviews to 40 unmarried participants (Mage = 33.14; SD = 4.04). The survey results suggest that as a group, single individuals indicated lower levels of quality of life compared to married people. Among single participants, multivariate analysis suggests that religiosity significantly increases life satisfaction, but does not reduce loneliness. Three themes emerged regarding the role of religion in constructing the meaning of singleness: singleness as a God-willed temporary period, a period to embrace life outside marriage, and a period where conservative socio-religious norms are negotiated with contemporary values. The study highlights the complex and pivotal role of religion in the Indonesian singleness experience.

Abstract

Marriage is a normative practice in Indonesia. As a result, many view marriage as a social achievement rather than a personal choice. This attitude could impact the psychological well-being of single individuals as they receive marriage pressures and associated stigma from their communities. This quantitative study aims to explore the role of friendship quality on life satisfaction among non-dating unmarried young adults in Indonesia. Friendship Quality Scale (FQS) and Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) were employed to measure the quality of friendship and the life satisfaction of 121 unmarried young adults who is not in a romantic relationship in Indonesia (Mage = 29.98; SD = 3.849), as approached through purposive sampling. Result of this study confirmed a significant contribution (49.4%) of friendship quality to the life satisfaction of male participants, but the results among the females was found insignificant.
