Abstract

Writing is one of skill which is being basic skill in English learning. Writing is very important to be learned because it is being a compulsory in teaching English which the students have to be well mastered. There are many kinds of genres insert the teaching writing. One of them is writing descriptive. The teacher used flash game as media in teaching learning process in order to it could be motivated the students who lack motivations and minimize boredom faced. The purpose of the study was to know the implementation of teaching writing descriptive text by using flash game and the students’ responses toward teaching writing descriptive text using by using flash game to seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surabaya. The researcher designs his research a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study is seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surabaya. To collect the data in this study, the researcher used four points to collect the data. They were the observation checklist, field notes, interview the teacher, and questionnaire as the technique. The implementation of flash game in teaching writing descriptive text was very effective to teaching writing descriptive text because it could be motivated and helped the students during teaching learning process. Students were not only being motivated and helped but also being participated actively during teaching learning process in the class. The result of students’ questionnaire was very good because most of students like very much with the implementation of flash game in teaching writing descriptive text. The researcher classified the questions into four factors. They were the first factor was about the students’ opinion about the material, it consisted into four questions. The second factor was about the students’ opinion about the teacher’s role during teaching writing descriptive text by using flash game, it consisted into two questions. The third factor was about the students’ opinion about the flash game, it consisted into three questions. The fourth factor was about the students’ opinion about general evaluation, it consisted into one question. That was way, the implementation of flash game in teaching writing descriptive text to seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surabaya was very successful because it can reach the aim of teaching writing descriptive text in the class and also it makes the students being participate actively during teaching learning process.

Abstract

This thesis entitled Nina’s Characterization Reflected in the Speech Acts in Black Swan Film. Question of the research are what kinds of speech acts which show Nina’s double characters in the film “Black Swan”, what are the intended meanings of those speech acts and why does Nina use those speech acts in film “Black Swan”. This study is aimed to find the kinds of speech acts which show Nina’s double characters in the film “Black Swan”, to analyze the intended meanings of those speech acts, and the last to explain why Nina uses those speech acts in film “Black Swan”. This study makes reference to Yule, Searle and Taleb theory. This research is qualitative research. The data of the research are the utterances of Nina which have been obtained from the film script. From the data analysis, it is found that 15 utterances which have intended meaning spread by 5 macro classes of speech act : 6 utterances of representative, 5 utterances of Expressive, 2 utterances of directive, 1 utterance of commissive, and 1 utterance of declarative. Beside that, the reason of the use of speech act is because she is getting OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) which can create delusion in herself and destroy her life

Abstract

This research aims to find out the kinds of strategies and the application of the strategies which are used by the fifth grade students at SDN Kebraon II Surabaya in improving vocabulary. In this research, a qualitative descriptive design is used to describe the objective of the research. The techniques of data collection were used in this research were observation and questionnaire. The data analysis used in this research was the interactive model analysis from Miles and Huberman that consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. In the results of this research, it is found that there are twenty one kinds of strategies which are used by the fifth grade students in improving vocabulary. The strategies that were employed by the students mostly were influenced by the teacher’s teaching techniques. The orders of the teacher seemingly become a habit for the student to be conducted automatically in the process of language learning.

Abstract

Teaching writing is one skill that is taught by English teacher in school. It became important skill that student have to master writing skill. The researcher chooses Descriptive Text, because it is one of type text to describe something such as place, animal, people and things. The researcher use social media of “Instagram” to teach student in writing descriptive text to improve students writing ability. The researcher use experimental research in quantitative method which two classes as experimental and control group. The sample of the data is taken from Barunawati Junior High School students.  The researcher use snowball sampling. The result has been calculated by using SPSS 20.0. The result showed that teaching writing descriptive text using social media“Instagram” to improve students writing ability is effective.

Abstract

AbstractThis study is conducted by analyzing the intended meanings lies behind the utterances in the dialogues of Peanuts Comic Strips in the Jakarta Post. Particularly, this study is aimed at analyzing the general socio-cultural knowledge applied to find the intended meanings, the kind of visual images used by the author to transmit the message, and the goals of the comic strips being loaded in the newspapers. Qualitative approach and content analysis is applied to get descriptive information. Specifically, this study uses Critical Discourse Analysis as the research technique. It sees the goal of the comic strips being loaded in the newspaper from the similarity of the storylines and the ideologies shared with the certain news. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, comic strips, intended meaning

Abstract

The result of this research may give more understanding of the use of flouting maxims on the script of Stand up comedy. The speech act in the script of stand up comedy Raditya Dika part 1 on July 2012 tend to flout the maxim for some reasons and explain the kinds of maxims that are flouted in the script of stand up comedy and explain how the maxims are flouted to create humor. This study applies Grice’s theory     This research is qualitative research. To collect the data the writer selected the utterances of raditya Dika which contain Flouting Maxims  then classified the data based on the types of flouting maxims. The result of this study  conclude that there are several types of flouting maxims, such as the flouting maxims of manner which are found in the script of stand up comedy by Raditya Dika, beside that there are several reasons that make Raditya Dika used flouting maxims

Abstract

This research is about an analysis of suggestive words that is used in Derren Brown and Romy Rafael’s hypnosis. This study answers the problems related to the use of suggestive words in hypnosis. These problems are about the type of suggestive words used in hypnosis, the steps to use the suggestive words, the intended meaning of the suggestive words and the reason to use the suggestive words. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. Derren Brown and Romy Rafael used the suggestive words in the form of suggestion to imagine and suggestion to obey. The illocutionary acts proposed by Daniel Vanderveken is used as the main approach in determining the illocutionary acts, beside that Searle’s approach of Speech acts is applied as the supporting theory. The result of the analysis is the suggestive words used by Derren Brown and Romy Rafael were in the form series of words. The series of words presented by Derren Brown and Romy Rafael as a hypnotist can be viewed from different angles depending on the mode of delivery used to change the context. By giving suggestion through a series of words, Derren Brown and Romy Rafael can make people do things that they consider unreasonable as driven by the subconscious mind.

Abstract

This research purposed to search and find out the correlations between students’ mastery of past tense and their achievement in writing narrative text. The method in this research used a purposive sampling technique with total sample 30 students.  In this research, the data are obtained using two kinds of test namely Grammar and writing test. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed using Product Moment Pearson. The outlays of this research, the average score of past tense is 69,33and writing score is 77,33. Thus, the final result in this research when the formula correlation is applied, the score is 0,797 or substantial. It means that the r value is higher than r table; students’ master past tense influence to writing narrative text. It can be concluded that there is a positive correlation between students’ mastery of past tense and their achievement in writing narrative text

Abstract

This research observed  the dialogue between the characters in The Karate Kid Movie which consists of characters from America (West) and China (East). It has purpose to find out the kinds of politeness strategies which are used by the main characters, and describe how and why they are used by the main characters. This research is qualitative research. The data are in the form of utterances. There are many politeness strategies which are used  by the main characters. In the bald on record strategy, there are three utterances found. Then, there are twelve utterances that include positive politeness strategy, while there is one utterance that includes negative politeness strategy, and there is one utterance contains off record strategy. It can be concluded that the main characters often use positive politeness strategies in their conversation. The result of this study can be concluded that the politeness strategies are important to be used in life. It means that it can be used to avoid and minimize the Face Threatening Acts which a speaker makes. Besides, it can be used to avoid misunderstanding in the conversation of daily life.

Abstract

As far as the researcher’s knowledge, the analysis of “The Effectiveness of Comic Strips in increasing student’s speaking ability” is still difficult to find, the researcher formulates the statement of the research that is comic strips give the significant effect in increasing student’s speaking ability. The objective of research is to find out whether comic strips method can give the significant effect in increasing students’ speaking ability or not. This research uses experimental design, the subject are VIIIth A as experimental group and VIIIth B as controlled group at MTs. Hidayatus Salam, Lowayu. The data collection uses test (pre-test and post-test) as instrument to measure the result of students. After giving the test, the researcher counts the data (percentage of the results which have the significant score) and analyses based on Criteria scoring by oral proficiency scoring categories by Brown. After giving the test of both classes, both of them have an increasing speaking ability. Based on the percentage of both classes, in post-test shows that with comic strips the experimental class has more significant effect than control class, the mean score of experimental class is 74.7 and 58.03 for control class. The experimental class has significant effect especially in the term of fluency, vocabulary, comprehensibility and performance.
