Abstract

Office Administration students at VHS require English reading-writing materials to assist them acquiringcompetencies as stated in SKNNI. The present study aimed to evaluate the existing materials and seektheir relevance to SKNNI. The evaluation involved three English textbooks entitled Bahasa InggrisSMA/MA/SMK/MAK for Grade X, XI, and XII through checklist method. The authors used an evaluativechecklist adapted from Cunningsworth (1995) and focused on three aspects — learning objective, language content, and text type. The results show that learning objectives in all assessed textbooksmismatch with the competencies defined in SKKNI. Likewise, language content (grammar andvocabulary) covered in those textbooks is irrelevant with language knowledge needed as the basics toattain the competencies in SKKNI. Then, the textbooks provide the kind of texts which are distinct fromthose required by SKKNI that must be business documents. Although one topic in textbook for GradeXII relates to office administration (about job application), it remains insufficient. To put it simply, thefindings indicate that the three textbooks do not correspond to the national standards, so they areinappropriate for Office Administration students. Therefore, designing reading-writing materials basedon SKNNI is the future action in response to the results of this study.

This study aims at determining whether there is a positive relationship between reading habits and reading comprehension of English Department in UNTIRTA. The study carried out in the students of the second semester in English Department at UNTIRTA. The study subjects are 98 respondents. This study used the descriptive quantitative approach with correlation analysis. Data collecting techniques are tests, questionnaires, and documentation. Technical analysis of prerequisite test data obtained from normality test, homogeneity test, and linearity test by using SPSS 23. Hypothesis test obtained from simple correlation by using SPSS 23 with a significance level of 95% (a=0,05). The study result consists of (1) A normality test showed the value of probability = 0,573 > significance level = 0,05, H0 accepted. It means that the variables data spread normally. (2) A homogeneity test showed the value of probability test = 0,587 > significance level = 0,05, H0 accepted. It means that the variables data are homogeneous. (3) Based on linearity test result, the equation is Ŷ= 7,913 +  0,148 X. (4) Based on correlation test result, Tcount = 6,571 > Ttable= 1,66. It means that there is a positive relationship between reading habits and reading comprehension of students in English Department at Untirta.

Abstract

Previous research has underscored the importance of learning strategies and critical thinking. However, the relationship between both constructs toward the enhancement of the students’ speaking skills in EFL context still receives scant attention. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influence of learning strategies (i.e. Discussion Strategy and Think-Pair-Share Strategy/TPS) mediated by critical thinking on the speaking skill of the Department of English Education students at a private university in Cirebon. The subject of this research consisted of 60 students divided into two classes (N=30 for experimental class and N=30 for control class). This study employed an experimental research design with a 2X2 factorial design. The findings demonstrated that English speaking skill of the students with Discussion Strategy was higher than those with the TPS strategy. Second, the English speaking skill of the students with high critical thinking level was higher than those with low critical thinking level. Third, there was a relationship between learning strategy and critical thinking toward English speaking skill. Fourth, there was no significant difference between the students’ speaking skills with Discussion strategy than those with Think-Pair-Share strategies in the group of students with low critical thinking level. This study concludes with the recommendations for future research to examine the effectiveness of discussion and think-pair-share strategies on enhancing the students’ critical thinking skills to promote their speaking skills.

Abstract

This research examined the honesty as part of character building in academic documents of English subject in Vocational high school. Using content analysis, the researcher analyzed the honesty throughout the documents. The data was words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and the pharaprashing of them. The data was taken from Vocational High School’s documents used by English teachers of vocational school. The finding showed that honesty appears explicitly and implicitly. All the aspects of character building of honesty were stipulated in syllabus provided by the government. The indicators of honesty that appear in the lesson plan, learning material, and assessment of English language subject in vocational high school are integrity, academic honesty, and sportsmanship. Those indicators are addressed implicitly in the documents represented by sub indicators such as the prohibition to cheat in doing the assignment and so forth. However, there was no consistency across the documents because honesty indicators appeared quite low in assessment tools prepared by English teachers. This condition indicated that students of Vocational High School get the character building of honesty through English language subject because it was stipulated, and addressed in academic documents. This study proposed a possibility for teachers to improvise their assessment tools by inserting honesty indicators.

Hence, there is a greater necessity for teachers and lectures to integrate ICT into their teaching, learning, and assessment. This study focuses on the assessment instrument for Grammar course of higher education for English Language Education Study Program. The analysis showed that the ICT Competences integration in the assessment instrument did not reach the levels that are meant for higher education based on standard frameworks UNESCO ICT Competency, EPG and the CEFR. This study aims to design ICT competences-integrated grammar assessment instruments for undergraduate English Language Education Study Program by using standard frameworks UNESCO ICT CFT, EPG and the CEFR. This study adapted Design and Development Research by Peffers. Based on the international standard frameworks, the results of the analyses suggest that the ICT competences of the existing assessment instruments are in the basic phase of EPG and knowledge acquisition level of UNESCO ICT Competency Framework. And the grammatical features are spread from level A2 to C1. Thus, the study proposed a design of ICT Competences-integrated grammar assessment instruments for English Language Education Study Program.
