Abstract

This research analyzes the system of food expenditure based on the household food security level in Central Java. The household food security levels are classified into four levels, consisting of food-secure, food-less secure, food-vulnerable and food-insecure. The data used are the Susenas data in the form of raw data. The results show that there are significant differences in the proportion of food expenditure among the households of food-secure and food-less secure to the households of food-vulnerable and food-insecure. In each level of household food-secure, household expenditure on instant foods and drinks shows the highest proportion compared to other food groups. The more insecure foods in a household, the higher expenditure proportion for tobacco. In each household group based on the level of food-secure, the households in urban areas have a smaller proportion of rice expenditure compared to the households in rural areas. Based on these results, hopefully the handling priority for the foodsecure problem should be better given to the household groups of food-vulnerable and foodinsecure.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that affect farmer’s decision in converting the function of their agricultural lands. The factors are: farmer’s age, education level, total number of family members, the area of agricultural lands, income, and location of agricultural land. This study is conducted in Depok sub-district, Sleman district, Yogyakarta, as an area with high rate agricultural land function conversion, marked by the decrease in the area of agricultural land. This study is conducted using survey method, with farmers who decide to convert the function of their agricultural land and farmers who do not as unit analysis. The data is analyzed using logistic regression. The analysis result shows that farmer’s age and agricultural land location have negative effect on the decision to convertagricultural land function, education level and total numbers of family members have positive effect, and the area of agricultural lands and income have no significant effect on the decision to convert the function of agricultural lands

Abstract

Indonesia was known as an agrarian and maritime country, should not experience difficulties in fulfill food needs or having high food security. However, it is a formidable challenge for the Indonesia to meeting food needs. The low level of food security was caused more by Indonesia's geographical conditions in the form of islands that cause inequality of food production, distribution and absorption among provinces in Indonesia. To reduce the occurrence of food security inequality between provinces in Indonesia, clusters was formed based on food security indicators. Based clustering technique is chosen to overcome the problem of overlapping and the limited availability problem in food security data. The results of research produce 3 clusters based on the classification of food security levels. Based on Bayesian Information Criterion, the most fitted cluster model is a three-cluster model with diagonal distributions. The first cluster consisted of 19 provinces with a classification of middle food security levels, the second cluster consisted of 10 provinces with the classification of the level of high food security, and the third cluster consisted of 5 provinces with a classification of low food security levels. It is expected that the results of this clustering can provide input to the Indonesian government to focus more on 5 Provinces with low food security classification, which focuses on access to food.

Abstract

This study examines determinants of household food security among the poorest households in Kalibawang, Yogyakarta. The Sustainable Livelihood Framework (SLF) is an approach that we use to explain how the poorest in the rural area in facing the vulnerability due to the coping food problem affected by the El Nino phenomenon by using their assets. To analyze factors in influencing food security for poor households in the village, we consider using determinants of household assets (human capital, financial capital, physical capital, natural capital and social capital), income, dummy employment, and many family members. Also, the sources of data for this study are cross section primary data from 125 poorest households, which are obtained by the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and personally administered questionnaire methods. For further analysis, we used Coping Strategies Index (CSI) as a food security indicator, and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) is a method to explain the influence of determinants. Based on the analysis, the results indicate the factors that have an impact on the poorest household food security are the female education, financial, physical, and social capital, as well as employment status.Meanwhile, the head of household education, natural capital, and income have no effect on food security among poorest in the rural area.
