Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this study was to test which one of the two methods (TPR and DM) were more effective to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The population of this study was all of the fifth graders of SD Islam Sultan Agung 4 Semarang in the academic year of 2015/2016. The instrument of the study was vocabulary test consisted of multiple choice items and matching items. Before treatment was given, pre-test was conducted to both groups. Meanwhile, post-test was conducted after the treatment had finished. The result showed that the mean of the experimental and control group in pre-test were 64.35 and 65.30, respectively. After being given the treatment, post-test was conducted in both groups. The t-test calculation showed that there was a significant difference. So, Total Physical Response method was more effective than Direct Method in learning English Vocabulary to the fifth graders of Elementary Students. Keywords: Total Physical Response, Direct method, and Vocabulary AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji mana dari dua metode (TPR dan DM) yang lebih efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan penguasaan kosa kata siswa.  Subjek penelitiannya adalah semua siswa kelas 5 SD Islam Sultan Agung 4 Semarang Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016. Instrumen penelitiannya berupa tes kosa kata yang terdiri dari pilihan ganda dan menjodohkan. Sebelum perlakuan diberikan, kedua grup diberikan pre-test. Sedangkan post-test diberikan setelah perlakuan selesai. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata grup eksperimen dan kontrol berturut-turut adalah 64.35 dan 65.30. Setelah diberikan perlakuan, kedua grup diberikan post-test. Nilai rata-rata untuk kedua grup berturut-turut adalah 78.65 dan 71.70. Perhitungan t-test menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang mencolok. Jadi, metode Total Physical Response lebih efektif daripada Direct Method dalam pembelajaran kosa kata Bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar. Kata Kunci:  Total Physical Response, Direct method, and Vocabulary

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pemahaman kelinstasbudayaan/cross cultural dan pemertahanan Bahasa dan Ilmu Komunikasi (FBIK) Unissula periodeApril 2017, yang berjumlah 52 calon, sebagai basis penetapan kebijakan publik. Metode survei dengan instrumen Kuesioner berbasis on-line digunakan untuk menginvestigasi kecenderungan sikap calon wisudawan , yaitu dengan memanfaatkan formulir . Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya kecenderungan positif bahwa calon wisudawan sudah terbekali dengan CCU dan BudAI yang cukup memadaisehingga mampu menjadi tenaga kerja yang tidak hanya terampil, melainkan juga berwawasan global namun tetap meneguhkan diri kepada nilai-nilai islami (islamic values) sebagai jati diri lulusan Unissula khususnya dan bangsa timur pada umumnya, meskipun baru pada tingkat kognitif. Oleh karena itu peneleti merekomendasikan penelitian lanjutan dengan metode observasi dan interview mendalam_ pasca kurun waktu tertentu, baik kepada mahasiswa yang bersangkutan (self-observation) maupun wawancara dengan pihak-pihak terkait (pengguna lulusan) untuk mengungkap tingkat pemahaman kelintasbudayaan dan pemertahanan BudAI lulusan FBIK Unissula pada ranah motorik dan afektif. Abstract

This research was surely aimed at investigating young learners’ behaviors toward the teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). This qualitative research used descriptive method. It was conducted in SD Islam Sultan Agung 4 Semarang. The population of this research was the students of grade 5 and students of grade 6 in the academic year of 2017/2018 with the total sample was 70 students, consisting of 32 students of Grade VA and 38 students of Grade VI. In this research, the researchers used convenience sampling to determine the sample of the research. The variables of this study were teaching English as a foreign language which is as independent variable and young learners’ behavior functions as dependent variable. The data collection techniques of this research were through 1) observation and 2) close-ended questionnaire. The results of the research then indicated that young learners showed positive behaviors toward the teaching English as a foreign language such as paid attention to the teacher’s explanation, wrote down and read the material, actively and bravely in asking questions to the teacher, and made the vocabularies list to be memorized.Keywords:  Teaching English as a Foreign Language; Behavior; Young Learners

Abstract

This study aims at investigating students’ perceptions of the use of Padlet in the class of Introduction to Functional Linguistics. The population of this study was a class of 2014 batch student of English Language Education program at Sultan Agung Islamic University (UNISSULA) Semarang with a sample of 28 people. This research is in the form of qualitative descriptive design. The data collection method uses observations and questionnaire. The data is then analyzed using interpretive descriptive analysis. The specific target to be achieved in this study is that by knowing students' perceptions of the use of Padlet, then this result can be used as a reference for the Faculty of Language and Communication Science and other faculties in the UNISSULA environment to improve the performance and quality of service to students especially in the learning and teaching process. In addition, the results of this study can also be a reference for both the Study Program and the Faculty to review the curriculum that has been implemented so far. From the data obtained through questionnaires distributed to 28 students of the English Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Languages and Communication Science of Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang in the class of 2014/2015, researchers can conclude that these students have very diverse perceptions in the use of Padlet media in learning Introduction to Functional Linguistics. To be sure, most students really positively appreciate the use of this media in linguistic learning in general.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding the effectiveness of “Recount Board Game” in teaching and learning students’ speaking skills to the the tenth grade students of SMA Islam Sultan Agung 3 Semarang, Indonesia. The researchers used quasi experimental method and chose two classes for it, they were: X-1 as experimental class with 33 students and X-2 as control class with 34 students. In the both of classes, researchers conducted the research in three steps: pre-test, treatment, and post-test to look for the data then were analyzed by using SPSS for Windows Version 21.0. The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference in the result of pre-test and post-test in both of two classes. The mean of pre-test in experimental group was 59.19 and the mean of post-test in experimental group was 83.03. Whereas the mean of pre test in control group was 57.65 and the mean of the post-test in control group was 76.47. Based on independent t-test, t-value was higher than t-table (4.474 ˃ 1.997) and p < 0.05 (0.000< 0.05). It meant that there was a significant difference in the student’s skills achievement between the experimental and control groups. So, it could be concluded that H1 was accepted and the use recount board game was effective in teaching students’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Motivation, almost at all aspects, gives a big impact for senior high school students to choose a major or study program at a university. The motivation itself can be both intrinsic and extrinsic. This study aims to investigate the motivation of students to choose English Education department at university. The subjects and sample of this research were 37 students of batch of 2015 and 2016 majoring in English Education of Sultan Agung Islamic University (UNISSULA) Semarang, Indonesia. This is descriptive quantitative research. Observations and questionnaires were used to collect the data needed. The data was then analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis. As results, it was eventually found that 81.1% of the students of English Education have strong intrinsic motivation which leads them to choose English Education as their major. This selection was due to students’ curiosity and passion to increase their potential and skills in English.Keywords: English education, students’ motivation, university

Abstract

This study was about students’ perception toward the use of english teacher’s classroom language in speaking skill enhancement. The objective of this research was to find out the high school students’ perceptions toward the use of English teacher’s classroom language in speaking skill enhancement. This study used descriptive case study. The participants of this research were 36 students of class X MIPA 7 of SMA Negeri 11 Semarang. The instrument used in this study was an open ended questionnaire and closed-ended questionnaire. The results showed that students had positive perceptions about the use of English teacher's classroom language needed as the facilitator in the classroom in speaking skills enhancement. The student's opinion also said that when in the classroom, the teacher did not only use English as the classroom language, but mixed it with Indonesian so that students who were not fluent could follow the lesson well.

Abstract

Desa Gedawang Banyumanik Semarang memiliki banyak potensi. Di saat usaha melimpah mereka memanen hasil bumi akan tetapi sebagian dari mereka mendirikan usaha berbasis UMKM (Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah) dari berbagai sektor. Peluang ini menciptakan masyarakat berinisiatif membangun usaha home industry. Tantangan para pengusaha home industry ini memproduksi produknya berdasarkan banyak sedikitnya pesanan. Mereka belum memanfaatkan media promosi sebagai sarana pemasaran. Beberapa alasan yang muncul diantaranya adalah karena belum dikuasainya teknologi informasi. Kegiatan ini bertujuan memberikan pemahaman dan keterampilan berkomunikasi berupa public speaking kepada warga Gedawang dalam upaya peningkatan standar mutu dan kesejahteraan UMKM mereka. Pendampingan dilakukan dalam bentuk pelatihan public speaking dan pendampingan pelaksanaan pemasaran dengan mengandalkan keterampilan public speaking hingga mampu memasarkan secara mandiri. Pendampingan juga dilakukan dalam bentuk mencarikan relasi atau channel pemasaran agar produk-produk UMKM ini dikenal di masyarakat luas. Dari hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan pendampingan ini diharapkan warga dapat melakukan presentasi, wawancara atau menyampaikan laporan yang lebih baik setelah mengikuti kegiatan ini.Gedawang Village Banyumanik Semarang has a lot of potential. When the business is abundant they harvest agricultural products, but some of them establish SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) from various sectors. This opportunity creates the community to take the initiative to build a home industry business. The challenge for home industry entrepreneurs is to produce their products based on the number of orders. They have not used promotional media as a marketing tool. Some of the reasons that arise include the lack of mastery of information technology. This activity aims to provide understanding and communication skills in the form of public speaking to Gedawang residents in an effort to improve quality standards and the welfare of their SMEs. Assistance is carried out in the form of public speaking training and mentoring in marketing implementation by relying on public speaking skills to be able to market independently. Assistance is also carried out in the form of finding relationships or marketing channels so that SMEs products are known to the wider community. From the results of the implementation of this assistance activity, it is hoped that residents can make presentations, interviews or submit better reports after participating in this activity.
