Abstract

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of picture in storybook reading to increase kindness in children. This research involved 31 children aged 5-6 years; they were taken from the kindergarten in Bandung as the participants. The intervention was done by reading eight picture books in eight days. The kindness was measured using a measurement instrument created by the researcher, in the form of nine coloured cards that described the behaviour of kindness. The measurement was also done by seeing through the kindness tree and observation sheets that filled out by the teacher. The data analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed-rank test shows a significant difference in the average score of kindness (p<0,05) before and after picture storybook reading. Two weeks after the intervention, the improvement on all kindness behaviours with the post-test score is greater than pre-test score that still can be found. Observation through kindness tree and observational sheets shows the same result.

Abstract

This research presented the relationship between a child’s empathy and parents’ prejudice, which was mediated by parenting style. The purpose of this research was to determine whether parenting style could be a mediator between parents’ prejudice and child’s empathy and also what type of parenting style would be appropriate to increase empathy in children. The research respondents consisted of 233 parents who had children aged 6-8 years old and were measured using the Basic Empathy Scale-Parent Report (BES-PR), the Blatant Prejudice Scale, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire-Revised (PAQ-R). The data obtained were processed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression (Hayes process). The results show that parenting style can be a mediator between child’s empathy and parents’ prejudice. The parenting style that can increase empathy in children is authoritative parenting. It means that when parents have a low prejudice, they tend to apply authoritative parenting, and this has an effect on increasing empathy in children.

Abstract

The research examined whether the communication patterns in the family by conversation and conformity orientations served as mediators of the relation between children’s empathy and family income. The research was conducted to parents of children age six to eight years old as the participants (N = 233) in Jakarta, Indonesia. The parents’ completed parent’s questionnaire for children’s empathy, family income, and family communication pattern. The relation analyzed using PROCESS Hayes. The results that the family communication pattern partially mediated the children’s empathy and family income. This research result shows a couple of findings. First, the children who come from a low-income family with family conformity orientation have lower empathy. The second finding is that the children with the family who have family conversation orientation have higher empathy. This second finding works for both low and high incomes family. Besides, only conformity orientation is found to mediate the effect of family income on child’s empathy. This research finds there are connections between family environment and children’s behavior. Developing the children’s empathy going to be positive for their social-emotional outcomes in the future is paramount because the children learn to express and regulate their emotion in a positive way when they have higher empathy.

Abstract

Metacognitive awareness of reading strategies can be defined as the knowledge or awareness about strategies to process reading materials, the ability to monitor comprehension, and the ability to employ strategies in understanding text. Previous studies show inconsistent results regarding the role of gender in the metacognitive awareness of reading. The current study aims to evaluate gender differences in the students? knowlegde of metacognitive strategies in reading. This study involves 137 students (59 boys and 78 girls) from grade 4 to 6. The current study uses Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) that consists of 3 subscales: global strategy, problem solving, and support strategy. Results show that female students outperform male students in their metacognitive awareness, both in general scale and in each type of strategy. In addition, the most used strategy is the problem solving strategy, while the least used is the support strategy. This finding suggests that teachers need to consider the gender difference in determining the effective methods of delivering materials in classrooms.

Abstract

Research on the relationship between parents and children consistently shows that parents play a major role in developing the child's personality and skills. The influence of parents on children, among others, took place through parenting style. In the Indonesian context, teachers had also been viewed as an authority whose role was similar to parents in educating children, considering students spent a remarkable amount of time learning together with teachers at school. Based on this reason, this study explored whether the parenting styles adopted by teachers as parents at their homes were related to the parenting styles they applied to students at school. We also examined the extent to which gender and education levels influenced parenting. Using accidental sampling, this study was conducted on 501 teachers from five cities in Indonesia using the Parenting Style Scale. The analysis showed that there was a positive relationship between the teacher's parenting styles at home and school. Furthermore, gender was a significant factor in distinguishing one dimension of parenting style, in contrast to the level of education. Further analysis found that domicile influenced parenting behavior, which indicated the role of culture in parenting practices.

Abstract

It is known that gifted high-school students tend to have difficulty in choosing career due to their wide-range interests and capabilities. In order to successfully making an appropriate career choice, having a high level of career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) is an important precondition. CDMSE is the belief in one’s ability to successfully complete the task necessary to make career-related decisions. Of several factors known to be affecting CDMSE, previous study has shown that career decision-making attribution (CDMA) could affect students CDMSE. However, the CDMA effect on CDMSE in gifted student is seemed to be related to personal trait of students, namely emotional intelligence (EI). Therefore, this study aims to examine the moderating role of EI on the impact of gifted high-school student CDMA on CDMSE. Subjects in this study were gifted high school students (N = 165; 52.12% males; M-age = 16.20 years old) in Jakarta. The measurement tools used are CDMSE Scale Short-Form, Assessment of Attribution for Career Decision Making, and Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short-Form (TEIQue-SF) adapted into Indonesian language. The data were analyzed using simple regression analysis with Hayes PROCESS model. It was found that there is a direct effect of CDMA on CDMSE with (F (1,163) = 10.6661, p = .0033 < .001), in which CDMA serves as a predictor of CDMSE. We also found that EI can serve as a predictor of CDMSE (F (1,163) = 10.6661, p = .0007<.001. However, EI did not moderate the CDMA-CDMSE relation. Discussion, limitations, and suggestions for further research are listed.Â
