Abstract

The quality of Indonesia’s infrastructure up until 2014 was considered uncompetitive, and one of the reasons was that there was not enough money spent on infrastructure, and too much on fuel subsidy. In November 2014, the government of Indonesia decided to cut the expenditure for fuel subsidy and reallocate the money to invest on public services. This study was conducted with the intention to quantify the impact of the program on economic growth and income distribution in Indonesia using Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) model. Simulation results indicated that the impact from social and human capital infrastructure was bigger than that of economic infrastructure, although the simulation for both categories resulted in an increase of sectoral output and domestic income. Therefore, improving infrastructure, especially social, is vital to stimulate economic activity in the long run.

Abstract

A nation capacity to provide clean and affordable energy is crucial for the development of its economy. Indonesia energy mix still rely heavily on fossil fuels, but a concerted effort to explore a more sustainable energy has been laid out by the government, including promoting studies and providing incentives for research in the area of sustainable energy. This paper tries to examine the trend of energy research in Indonesia, the theme of research in the field of energy and to find out which institution has conducted a rigorous research and actively producing publications in this field. The study uses data of international research publications from World of Science (WOS) during 1997-2014. Data Analysis using Social Network Analysis (SNA) with UCINET, NetDraw, and VOSViewer software. The result shows that the number of international publications on energy in Indonesia are increasing and most publications are of research collaboration with institutions from other country. Based on keywords that frequently appear which are biomass, biodiesel, and ethanol, it can be concluded that popular research theme on energy in Indonesia is renewable energy. This paper concludes with the findings on institutions with the highest rank in renewable energy publications, those are Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Institut Pertanian Bandung (IPB), and Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia/Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). Research collaborations with institutions from around the globe will improve the performance of research and development bodies in Indonesia, which will only benefit the economy in the long run.

Abstract

This paper investigates or examines the causal links between price of styrene butadiene latex (SBL) and other domestic variables such as supply, demand, Herfindahl Hirschman Index (HHI), price of styrene, and price of butadiene during the period of 1995–2017 on the monthly basis.. Results from Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) or unit root test showed that the stationary state of the whole variables is of first difference (I). The Granger pairwise causality test revealed a bidirectional causality of SBL with BTD(Butadiene), SBL with STY(Styrene), SUPP(Supply) with DMD(Demand), DMD with STY, DMD with BTD and STY with SUPP and vice versa. Johansen test found out a co-integration of SBL prices. However, this study proved no significant links between the price of SBL and supply of SBL (SUPP) in the long and short run. This paper highlights the fact that SBL price has a significant direct impact in the long run on the styrene (STY) and butadiene (BTD) prices, as well as HHI. Similarly, these aspects also have a significant direct impact proved by the positive coefficient in the long run on the SBL pricing. The findings further showed that the price of SBL has a connection and significant direct impact on the negative arrow for the short and long run equilibrium, in line with the price and demands for SB Latex, pressing and oil classification.

Abstract

Indonesia was known as an agrarian and maritime country, should not experience difficulties in fulfill food needs or having high food security. However, it is a formidable challenge for the Indonesia to meeting food needs. The low level of food security was caused more by Indonesia's geographical conditions in the form of islands that cause inequality of food production, distribution and absorption among provinces in Indonesia. To reduce the occurrence of food security inequality between provinces in Indonesia, clusters was formed based on food security indicators. Based clustering technique is chosen to overcome the problem of overlapping and the limited availability problem in food security data. The results of research produce 3 clusters based on the classification of food security levels. Based on Bayesian Information Criterion, the most fitted cluster model is a three-cluster model with diagonal distributions. The first cluster consisted of 19 provinces with a classification of middle food security levels, the second cluster consisted of 10 provinces with the classification of the level of high food security, and the third cluster consisted of 5 provinces with a classification of low food security levels. It is expected that the results of this clustering can provide input to the Indonesian government to focus more on 5 Provinces with low food security classification, which focuses on access to food.

Abstract

This study aims to map the districts/cities in East Java that is classified as having quality economic growth, as well as formulating a concept of quality economic growth by examining several social and economic indicators such as unemployment, income distribution across regions, income distribution among economic sectors, equity investment, and poverty.Using Klassen's typology analysis, it is found that most (19 regions) districts and cities in East Java are in the advanced category but depressed. Meanwhile, there are 8 regions that are classified as advanced and growing rapidly and 10 regions are classified as regions that can grow fast and 1 region classified as relatively underdeveloped, namely Tuban District. While the regions that have qualified economic growth are Lamongan District, Jember District, Probolinggo, Madiun, Batu, Blitar, Pasuruan and Mojokerto. Based on the Fix Effect regression model, it can be concluded that the number of industries and Human Development Index have a significant negative effect on economic growth while the contribution of the primary sector has a significant and positive effect on economic growth.

Abstract

The research aimed to analyze the role of subsidized fertilizers on rice production and income of farmers in various land typologies. The sampling used is cluster method and followed with an experimental research by using Split Plot Design. The compound fertilizer costs are one-half times higher than single fertilizer, but the rice yield difference is enhanced by the provision of fertilizer reaching more than two-times higher compared to a single fertilizer. The rice yields can be increased more than three-times higher, but the income of farmers can be increased only about one and half times. The Government needs to make a policy of the lowest rice price, then income of farmers can be automatically increased and at the same time the welfare of famer’s families will be also increased.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the level of efficiency with intermediation approach and determinant of efficiency of Bank Pembangunan Daerah (BPD). Efficiency is measured using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method based on the intermediation approach. This research   contribute on modelling of determinant of efficiency of Bank Pembangunan Daerah (BPD) using intermediation approach.  The object of this research is 26 BPD(s). Furthermore, the determinant of efficiency of BPD is analyzed using the Tobit regression. The level of efficiency is the dependent variable. Meanwhile, the independent variables used are CAR, LDR, NPL, NIM, ROA, Inflation, Economic Growth, and Interest Rate. The research results show that BPD has a different efficiency level average (high, sufficient, moderate, and low efficiency level average). This is due to the use of inputs that have an impact on the optimal output maximization. CAR and LDR have the significant and positive effects on the efficiency of BPD. Interest rate and inflation have the significant and negative effects on the efficiency of BPD. Meanwhile, NPL, NIM, ROA and Economic Growth have no effects on the efficiency of BPD. This results is expected to contribute in identifying any factor affecting the efficiency of BPD, both the internal and macro economy, and also to be the stimulus for the development of health measuring instrument of BPD in which efficiency reflects the quality of risk management on the intermediary activity of BPD.
