Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to describe the values of the American ethos concept in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum. This study uses the American ethos theory of Herbert McClosky in the book of Traditional Value in American life (1974). The object of this research is the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum, that was downloaded from internet media. The focus of this study is a consept of the American ethos in the novel and classification of the types of characters in the novel. The data collection technique used is a careful reading technique, recording, and interpretation. Two approaches were used, namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The data analysis technique used is descriptive. The results of the study are as follows. (1) Concept of the American ethos in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum that showing the attitudes, actions, and dialogues of the characters. Therefore, the values of the American ethos concept are found, namely ambition and achievement, profit pursuit and personal interests, as well as competition. (2) The types of characters possessed by the characters namely amoral, expedient, conforming, irrational-conscientious, and rational-altruistic. (3) The types of character reflected in the American ethos, namely amoral, expedient, and rational-altruistic.      Keywords: American Ethos, Types of Character, Values

Abstract

ABSTRACTSThis research entitled “Taboo Words in English and Biak Language: A Contrastive Analysis” is analyzed and described in sociolinguistic field. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the types and meaning of taboo words and to analyze their differences and similarities. This research used a descriptive method. The data are analyzed using theory of Wardhaugh (1986:230) to find out the types, using Leech’s theory (1981:19) to find out the meaning, and were contrasted to find out the differences using Lado’s theory (1971:217). The significances of this research are theoretically, this research is expected to give contribution to the development of sociolinguistics especially in terms of taboo words and to practically it can be useful, for young Biak generation who want to learn taboo words in English and for foreign learners who want to study taboo words in Biak language. The result of this research shows that taboo words found in Biak language were classified into eight types, they are, sex, excretion, bodily function, death, animal, religion, and supernatural. The simillarities in English and Biak Language is the use of this word can cause misunderstanding and the differences of English and Biak Language is taboo words in Biak have levels whereas in English there is no level. This shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the happiness, such as anger, emotion, and surprise, to joke, to insult, and to talk about sex. Keywords : Taboo Words; English and Biak Language; Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This study is entitled “Taboo Words in English and Buru Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objective of this research are to identify and classify taboo words in English and Buru language and to analyze the differences between the two languages. This research use descriptive method, which take three steps to complete this research. In the preparation writer reads some books and journals about taboo words, the data in English it’s collected through English books. Data on taboo words in Buru language were collected by interviws with several informants, especially in Basalale Village, Waelata sub-district. The informants are native speakers of the Buru language, aged 30-60 years, who have no disruption in pronunciation and still have good language skills. The data of English and Buru language are classified, analyzed and explained using a theory from Wardhaugh (1986), and data from both languages are contrasted using the theory of Lado (1975). Classification based Wardhaugh's theory, six types of taboo words were found including sex, body function, animals, excretion, death and religion.  Taboo words in Buru language found eight types of taboo words, sex, body function, animals, excretion, death, religion, curse and address terms.      Keywords: Taboo Words: English, Buru Language; Contrastive analysis, sociolinguistics

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is entitled “The Analysis on Students’ Error in Using Simple Present Tense at SMP N 5 Manado”. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify, and analyze descriptively type of errors and the errors frequently made by students in using simple present tense at SMP N 5 Manado. This research is expected to help in developing language learning process and to give information about the errors especially in using simple present tense. In this research, the writer used case study method and the theory from Ellis (2003). She categorizes three types of errors in the language learning namely omission, misinformation, and misordering. There were 61 participants involved from two classes of SMP N 5 Manado in VII 6 and VII 7. The writer used a writing test consists of simple present tense material in order to get the data from the student.The result of this research shows that there are several errors that students made in using simple present tense. There are 151 errors and it was classified into omission, misinformation and misordering. The errors of omission include omission of – s/es in ending verb, omission of to be, omission not in negative sentences, omission of to do in negative and question sentences, omission of question mark on question sentences, and omission of object. The errors of misinformation include misinformation of simple present tense verb, misinformation of subject, misinformation of object, misinformation of to be, and misinformation of to do. The errors of misordering include misordering of to do, misordering of to be and 2 combination of errors. The error that frequently made by students is misinformation which was done for 683 times.     Keywords: Error Analysis, Simple Present Tense, Omission

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Styles of Leadership as Reflected in the Novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ by Ernest Hemingway”. In this research, the writer focuses on the styles of leadership as reflected in the novel. The novel itself is based on Hemingway’s experiences during the Spanish Civil War and features an American protagonist, named Robert Jordan, who fights with Spanish guerrillas for the Republicans. The purpose of this research are to identify and classify the styles of leadership as reflected in the novel and to analyze how styles are reflected through the novel. In this research the writer used qualitative method and described it descriptively. The writer analysed the leadership styles through the character in the novel by using Martin’s theory of characterisation (2004) by looking on character’s features, actions, intentions, desires, and traits. The data were analysed based on Goleman’s theory styles of leadership (2000). There are six styles of leadership, those are: coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching.The results of this research shown six styles of leadership as reflected in the novel, those are coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting, and coaching. Abstract

 ABSTRACT            This research is entitled ?Forms of Polite Requet in English and Tontemboan Language ( A Contrastive Analysis). The aim  of this research is to identify, classify, analyze and to contrast polite utterance in English and Tontemboan Language. In this research, the writer uses descriptive method. The English data were collected from English Grammar Book, website, film and some previous skripsi, while the data of Tontemboan language were collected by doing interview to the native speaker in Raanan Baru village. In this research, the writer uses the theory of Leech (1983)  in analyzing the data and the theory of Lado ( 1971) in contrasting both languages to find out their similarities and differences. The result of this research shows that English and Tontemboan language has similarities and differences. In terms of similarities, each language has six maxims of politeness that are used to avoid estrangement during conversation. The differences between these two languages can be seen in the sentence structure. In English the subject is always at the beginning of the sentence for example I go to school, whereas in Tontemboan the subject is usually at the end of the sentence for example mange am pasar  yaku. In addition, the difference between these languages is glotal or emphasis in the pronunciation of words in English is not written, whereas in Tontemboan language is always written. Keywords : Forms of Polite Request, English and Tontemboan Language,  Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT             This research is entitled “Simbol-simbol tangan di komunitas Pelayanan Mahasiswa Pantekosta (Suatu analisis semiotika)”. is focused on symbols that can be found in almost all aspects of human life. In this category, symbols are used on Pentecostal community. The aims of this research are to identify and classify kinds of symbol and to analyze and describe meaning of symbol that can be found in Pentecostal student community. The writer uses Pierce theory (1955) about sign and symbols in the process of identifying and classifying kinds of symbols and the process of analyzing and describing the meaning of symbols used in Pentecostal student services community. The data were collected in Sam Ratulangi University. The writer uses descriptive method to analyze the forms of symbols found in Pentecostal student services community activities in this research. The results of this research show that there are 13 symbols used in Pentecostal student services community. The writer clasissifies them into 2 parts; the first is general symbols, which consist of 2 symbols namely, Cross hand symbol, and greetings symbol. The second part is Komisariat symbols, which consist of 11 symbols, we are one symbol, two piece symbol, three symbol, bad odor symbol, Hand Money symbol, OK symbol, sevent symbol, hand strong symbol, Sarangaheo symbol, X symbol, K symbol. The meaning of the general symbols are to identity and as a union of all Pentecostal student services members. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Competitive Act and Conflictive Act in the Film Hacksaw Ridge by Mel Gibson” is described based on pragmatics analyze. This study focuses on competitive and conflictive acts that used in the film Hacksaw Ridge by Mel Gibson. This research aims at identifying and describing the competitive and conflictive acts in the film Hacksaw Ridge. In collecting data, the writer elicits them through the conversation among the characters in the film. To analyze them, the writer used descriptive analysis based on Leech’s theory. Leech divided competitive and conflictive acts into eight kind which is ordering, asking, demanding, threatening, reprimanding, begging, accusing, and cursing. It is expected that study will help student and also readers in learning pragmatics especially the competitive and conflictive acts in the film.       Keywords : Speech act; illocutionary act; competitive and conflictive acts.

Abstract

 ABSTRACTThis research is entitled “Euphemism in English and Tontemboan Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the forms of euphemism and to analyze and describe the differences of euphemism in English and Tontemboan language. This research uses a descriptive method. There are three steps to finish this research, those are preparation, data collection, and to analyze and describe the data that using the theory of Fromkin (1997: 286), Wardhaugh (1986: 231), and Allan and Burridge (1991: 14), and were contrasted to find the differences using Lado’s theory. The result of this research shows that form of euphemism in Tontemboan language more shows a stress in a word or sentence than form of euphemism in English. There are 79 euphemisms found in English and 48 euphemisms in Tontemboan language. The euphemism in English were classified into 23 forms those are: sex, the part of human body, natural function of body, religion, dying, unemployment, criminality, figurative expression, flippancy, remodelling, circumlocution, clipping, acronym, abbreviation, omission, one for one substitution, general for specific, part for whole euphemism, hyperbole, understatement, use of technical terms of jargon, use of general or colloquial terms, and methapor. In Tontemboan language, there are some forms of euphemism that were not found those are: flippancy, remodelling, circumlocution, acronym, abbreviation, part for whole euphemism, use of technical terms or jargon. In this research, especially in Tontemboan language there is one form of euphemism that the writer found that was not included in three concepts used, namely euphemism related to supernatural. Keywords: Euphemism, English and Tontemboan Language, Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT            This research entitled “Taboo Word Related to Gender in English and Karo Language: A Contrastive Analysis”. The objectives of this research is to identify and classify the kinds of taboo words related to gender in English and Karo language and to analyze the difference of both languages. This research used descriptive method, which takes three steps to finish this research. In preparation, the writer reads some books and journals abouts taboo words and gender to find the relevan theory. The data of the kinds of taboo words related to gender in English were collected by American Pie movie and skripsi, while taboo words related to gender in Karo language were taken from interviewing to 10 informants. The data about taboo words related to gender in English and Karo language that have been collected, then classified, analyzed and described by using the theory of Wardaugh’s (1986), then the data of both languages were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1975). The result of this reseach showed that there are four kinds of taboo word related to gender in English and Karo language, namely taboo word related to sexs, part of body, animals and excretions. In Karo language showed that, there are anothers taboo words which aren’t included in Wardaugh’s theory, which related to kinship and ancestor.   Keywords: Taboo Words, Gender, English and Karo Language, Contrastive Analysis
