Abstract

This research aimed to show the impact of the Visual Image strategy on the students’ speaking skills at 10th grade at one of the private schools in Jember. The design of research used was quasi-experimental by forming 2 groups, Its Control, and Experimental group. To investigate the effectiveness of the visual image strategy, the researcher conducted an oral test with the first step is giving 2-3 treatments to the experimental group, then the researcher conducted a post-test to the control and experimental group which finally the scores of the two groups were compared through three steps (T-Table, T-test, and DRE). The results of this study can be input and motivation for teachers to determine students' speaking skills and can apply this strategy to learning English in the classroom.

Abstract

Effective usage of DMs can help both readers and writers to understand better.Many researchers point out that DMs are important thing in writing, but in another situation, there are still many students using inappropriate DMs in their writing. The goal of this study is to know inappropriate Discourse markers on their essay and also to know what are the factors behind it by studying argumentative essay using Fraser taxonomy and conducting interview.The result argumentative essay, it is found misused discourse markers and overused discourse markers. Total number of inappropriate DMs on students’ argumentative essay are 26 markers. Based on the interview, the researcher found some factors; lack of knowledge, lack of instruction and lack of the awareness about discourse markers.From the result of this study, it indicated that the students’ knowledge about discourse markers were limited. Besides, their essayswere less coherent and cohesive. As conclusion, limitation and recommendation were then discussed.

Abstract

This study aims to obtain data on improving reading skills Report text using Paired Reading (PR) class X SMK MINQU Gumukmas technique. Research subjects were students of class X in semester 2. This research was carried out using the Kemmis and Mc models. Taggart implemented with stages planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The results of the research using Paired Reading (PR) show the data obtained from the evaluation test in order to improve students' reading of the report text in order to obtain a score ≥ 75 in the pre-test of 39%. In the meantime, the teacher activity monitors and students in the first round of the first meeting were 49 percent and the second round was 60 percent, while the second round of the meeting was 70 percent and the second round was 78%. The Paired Reading Strategy can therefore improve students' reading report on text skills in Class X.
