Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that occurred in Indonesia, especially in Medan City, made people lose their jobs and had to survive to prevent the transmission of Covid-19. On average, residents who live close to infection-prone areas flock to buy masks and hand sanitizers. The supplies of hand sanitizers at various pharmacies has run out, even though the prices have gone up even ten times. This activity aims to socialize and train the making of hand sanitizers from Eucalyptus citriodora plants as an economic opportunity in the New Normal Era. The solution method is carried out by providing preparation training, extraction, and economic analysis of the availability of raw materials and the feasibility of Hand sanitizer products to the community in Tegal Sari Mandala II Village, Medan Denai District, Medan City. The results that have been achieved are hand sanitizer products made by the community and have high entrepreneurial skills in this New Normal Era. This activity is beneficial for the community, especially in terms of increasing knowledge and skills in making Hand sanitizers that can be applied to improve the economy during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Abstract

North Sumatra is the province with the largest number of poor people in 2019 with the fifth highest poverty percentage on the island of Sumatra. This province has a good potential for accelerating economic growth and improving the quality of life if all levels of society are empowered with all their capabilities in carrying out productive business activities, and can access to socio-economic resources. This study aimed to determine and analyze the effect of the real GDP per capita variable, the open unemployment rate, and the average length of schooling simultaneously and partially on the poverty rate in 33 cities and regencies of North Sumatra Province in 2017-2019. It used secondary data using the Eviews program, while analysis technique used was panel data regression. Based on the research results, it was found that the real GDP per capita, the open unemployment rate, and the average length of schooling simultaneously had a significant effect on the poverty level. Per capita real GRDP and average length of schooling partially had a negative and significant effect on poverty rate. Meanwhile, the open unemployment rate had no significant effect on poverty. The variable that has the most dominant influence on the level of poverty was real GDP per capita.

Abstract

North Sumatra is one of the growth centers in Indonesia. However, its number of poverty is one of the highest nationally. This study aimed to see the performance and prove whether there is a convergence of poverty in North Sumatra Province during the years 2011-2021. The analytical method used included quantitative descriptive analysis. Through the Klassen quadrant which was divided into two periods, it can be seen that some regions have moved quadrants and some other regions have moved towards quadrant lines at different levels. The situation showed serious inequality in some areas that were in quadrant 4. The results of the Williamson index showed that the degree of inequality in poverty levels between regions tended to decrease, although there has been an increase in several years of observation. Through the sigma convergence test, it was strongly indicated that there was a dispersion of poverty levels between regions towards one common ground. It has been further confirmed by the absolute beta convergence test. Real income per capita and RLS that included in the conditional convergence model have proven to accelerate the process of poverty convergence between regions in North Sumatra.
