Abstract

This research mainly aims at conducting an extensive evaluation of the two English textbooks for senior high school grade tenth revised edition based on Kurikulum 2013 yang disempurnakan (curriculum 2013 revised edition). This study employed a descriptive qualitative study. The English textbooks for the tenth grade published by Erlangga and Ministry of Education and Culture were selected as the sources of data. The evaluation focuses on how far the textbooks provide learning to promote cognitive skill. Basic competencies in cognitive domain of curriculum 2013 were adapted as an instrument to evaluate the textbooks. Findings found that the textbooks’ authors of the two textbooks have tried to present opportunities for students to achieve core competencies in cognitive domain of curriculum 2013 in several units. Nevertheless, there are certain units that need additional instructions to provide more opportunities for students in acquiring low and high-order thinking skills. On the basis of the findings, the textbooks may revise or improve the textbooks’ content by adding more experiences for students to achieve the levels of taxonomy bloom expected in the core and basic competencies of curriculum 2013. The findings are also useful for teachers to add or modify the instructions that suit the purposes of curriculum 2013 specifically in cognitive domain.

Abstract

Adjective clause is a clause that modifies noun or noun phrase. It is important to be mastered because it is known for its usefulness, complex structures and grammatical importance. Unfortunately, many students found it difficult to construct correct adjective clauses. Students did not know the concept, function of relative pronoun and the use of adjective clause. Furthermore, students also ignored in the use of comma as giving additional information to the meaning of the sentence.This study is aimed to describe and analyze second year students’ grammatical achievements in constructing restrictive and non-restrictive adjective clause. There were 30 students from K1,K2,K3,K4,NK1,NK2 as the research samples. Proportionate stratified random sampling was used as the sampling technique to collect the data. This descriptive study used grammar test as the research instrument; 9 items were for restrictive and 9 items were for non-restrictive. The findings were students’ grammatical achievement in constructing restrictive were poor (47,02%) and students’ grammatical achievement in constructing non-restrictive were very poor (39,25%).

Abstract

This study investigated the students’ difficulties in answering structure and written expression of TOEFL by last year English department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. The aims of this study were to find the students’ difficulties in answering structure and written expression of TOEFL and to find the reasons or causes of the students’ mistakes. The participants of this study were 25 students. This descriptive study used two instruments in the research; structure sub-test and interview. This study used proportional stratified sampling to choose the sample. The study found that the last year English students of Universitas Negeri Padang had problems in 11 items among 18 items assessed. There were three 3 the most difficult items; negation, reduced form, and parallel structure items. The reasons behind the students’ mistakes were ignorance, careless, dubious, oblivious and miscast. The first two reasons were the biggest causes of students’ mistakes.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the development of speech disfluency of Zayn Malik, ex-One Direction member, regarding his anxiety disorder issue since 2015 – 2017. The types of this research was descriptive qualitative through longitudinal analysis. Data for this research were 281 utterances from trancriptions of Zayn Malik’s speech based on ten videos taken from Youtube since 2015 until 2017. The result showed that there were 1369 types of speech disfluency. Silent pause and filled pause gave huge contribution to disrupt Zayn Malik’s speech. The most common types and the highest types of speech disfluency produced by Zayn Malik was filled pause that was 627 types or 72%. Surprisingly, Zayn Malik developed more silent pause than filled pause since the last of 2016 until the middle of 2017, and he no longer produced types of stuttering like prolongation or block since the middle of 2016. It proved that Zayn Malik is indeed a non-stuttered speaker. In relation to anxiety and speech disfluency, Zayn Malik were more anxious to speak in front of many audiences or with men interviewers because his speech disfluency increased; while it decreased when he talked to woman interviewer or a machine by seeing the result that he produced more silent pause during the interview. Hence, the best way to overcome stuttering for anxiety sufferer is by producing more silent pause during speech in order to create a good speaking performance.

Abstract

Every speaker is always influenced by home language knowledge in pronunciation activity. Because of that, this research interested to describes Phonetic characteristics of English pronunciation delivered by Joko Widodo through Suprasegmental features such as Pitch, loudness, and Pause and analyzed by PRAAT software. The source of data is speech script from video at the APEC CEO Summit 2014. In the data analysis, there are 10 Pitch, 17 loudness and 9 pause forms. From 10 pitch forms, the use of tone contours often appeared is fall-rise tone. The rest is fall and level tone. The lowest frequency is 80.23 Hz and the highest frequency reaches 190.9 Hz. From 17 loudness forms, there are 11 data that the speaker placed a primary stress differently. Then, there are 6 data that placed primary and secondary stress inappropriately, if these were compared with the oxford dictionary. Moreover, the decibel range of the speaker tended to use around 70 decibel and above which is categorized to normal decibel. In the 9 pause forms, there are eight inter lexical pauses which means the pauses happened among lexical. Thus, by suprasegmental features mean to reveal the phonetic characteristics had by Joko Widodo as a foreign speaker.

Abstract

The word address term is the word person use to call or greet others. Batak Toba language has various forms of greeting words used in communicating with someone. This study aims to find out the forms of the word greetings based on kinship or family system used by Batak Toba people who live in Padang Pasir Parupuk Tabing as nomads. This study will also explain and describe the communicative function the use of greeting. The method used in this research is descriptive method that describes and process data based on facts that exist in the field. This research is focused on the forms and functions of the address terms word in Batak Toba language. Data were collected through interview with some informants and made notes. In this study, the informants are Batak Toba People who has blood relations and marriage. Data were analyzed based on the forms of address terms based on kinship system of Batak Toba. The results of research indicate that there are various address terms used by Batak Toba ethnic especially in kinship relationship based on lineage and marriage that used by Batak Toba people. Interestingly, there are several forms of greeting words that are similar to each other.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tipe-tipe perubahan bahasa pada level kosakata dalam Bahasa Kerinci yang ditemukan di dialek Pulau Tengah dan sikap penutur terhadap perubahan bahasa yang terjadi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan data penelitian berupa kosakata lama dalam dialek Pulau Tengah yang mengalami perubahan dan jawaban dari para penutur yang mengemukakan pendapat mereka terhadap perubahan bahasa pada level kosakata dalam dialek Pulau Tengah. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada dua tipe perubahan bahasa pada level kosakata yang ditemukan pada dialek Pulau Tengah yaitu penambahan kosakata baru dan kata-kata yang hilang. Bagian-bagian dari penambahan kosakata baru yang ditemukan adalah peminjaman dari Bahasa Indonesia, peminjaman dari Bahasa Minangkabau, penciptaan dari merek, dan penciptaan kata baru yang tidak memiliki alasan spesifik. Berikutnya, ditemukan dua macam sikap penutur terhadap perubahan yang terjadi yaitu positif dan netral dengan jumlah sikap positif lebih banyak daripada netral.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Autistic savant as one of the language disorders can be found in daily life and it also can be portrayed in literary works and films. An autistic savant is a person with autism who has the limitation in most social functions but has cognitive abilities, such as possessing some outstanding memories and computational skills. This research aims to find out the types of language disorder and to find out the dominant type of language disorders found in autistic savant portrayed in Levinson’s Rain Man film. This research used a descriptive method. The data used in this research were the utterances of an autistic savant. The result of this research shows that the type of expressive language disorder was obtained with the occurrence percentage of 67.7% while the receptive language disorder type was obtained by the occurrence percentage of 32.3%. From this percentage, it can be seen that the most dominant type of language disorders experienced by autistic savant in Rain Man film is expressive language disorder. It means the autistic savant as an adult person also has difficulty in expressing or producing language. Key words: language disorder, autistic savant, expressive language disorder, receptive language disorder

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine whether Tansi Language in Sawahlunto is a new language kind in West Sumatra or a dialect based on sociolinguistic analysis, speech community, language attitude, and language loyalty. Type of this research is descriptive qualitative in order to describe that Tansi Language is a language or Creole which has been claimed by the previous researcher.  This research successfully determines that Tansi Language is a new language kind in West Sumatra by comparing one hundred words of Swadesh list between Tansi Language to Minangkabaunese standard Language, and supported by questionnaires and interview sheets to get the data. According to Swadesh list, Tansi Language is categorized as a language differences with percentage 73% which is the accumulation of lexical differences and sound differences. Thus, it can be concluded that Tansi Language is a new Language in West Sumatra.

Abstract

As a result of language contact, creole is a language phenomena which must be investigated by linguists. This research investigated the phonological system of Muarasipongi creole. The aim of the research was to identify the phonemes and determine the distribution of phonemes. Descriptive-qualitative method was used in conducting the research. Based on the findings, there are 37 phonemes found in  Muarasipongi Creole. The phonemes are /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /ʧ/, /ʤ/, /k/, /g/, /?/, /h/, /s/, /ʃ/, /m/, /n/, /ŋ/, /ɲ/, /r/, /l/, /w/, /j/. /a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/, /æ/, /ai/, /ua/, /uo/, /ou/, /oi/, /au/, /ei/, /iu/, /ui/, /ae/, and /ia/. In term of phoneme distribution, Muarasipongi creole have variation. The consonants have variation in distribution. Moreover, vowels are complete distribution except phoneme /æ/. Furhermore, none of diphthongs have complete distribution.
