Abstract

Zero-waste is a recent phenomenon which is one of the most cost-effective local solution to handle some of the environmental, social and economic challenge in urban area. Urbanization and rising populations will affect the increase in consumption, which in turn will also increase waste production in urban areas. In 2020, it was noted that 24 percent of waste in Indonesia had not been processed properly. Thus, the waste management approach needs to prioritize not only through a qualified technology system but also needs to be supported by the transformation of people's behavior, one of which is through zero-waste. Bulk store is an urban initiative that applies the concept of zero-waste. This shop combines social and entrepreneurial concepts as well as the environment in carrying out its business processes. Through the concept of zero-waste, people must bring their own containers to shop here. This study aims to examine the opportunities and challenges of bulk store as an initiative to achieve zero-waste communities in urban areas. The method used in this research is qualitative approach through interviews and observations with shop owners, consumers and networks. The results obtained from this study are that education is the main factor determining the success of the bulk store. Apart from that, bulk stores also have another role, namely as a market-hub for local producers around urban areas. This makes bulk stores have a strategic role in supporting the zero-waste community

Abstract

Migration for rural communities is part of an adaptation strategy to deal with stresses and risks to their livelihoods. In fact, the rural agricultural sector is formidable compared to other sectors because it can survive and increase significantly even though the economy is being disrupted due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This study aimed to analyze the role of migration strategies carried out by migrant households in Padas Village, Jono Village, and Gawan Village. The sustainable livelihood framework becomes a reference for assessing comprehensive household livelihood. This research uses a case study approach. In-depth data collection is carried out on migrants and migrant families with various migration characteristics. The results show that the migration strategy that occurs in Padas Village, Jono Village, and Gawan Village is influenced by the time of migration, differences in resources/livelihood capital characteristics, the context of vulnerability to livelihoods, and the migration strategy conducted. At the regional scale, although there are differences in the characteristics of resources/livelihood capital between the three villages, the role of migration remains the same. Meanwhile, the role of the migration strategy can be seen more clearly based on the time of migration that occurred in the three villages.

Abstract

An increase in the level of public consumption will affect the yield of waste (waste), one of which is a solid waste (garbage). in addition, technological developments also have an impact on the quantity of production of waste types. The use of plastic waste in daily life cannot be abandoned, because all products of daily necessities cannot be separated from plastic/bottle wrap. Natural decomposition of plastic waste takes a long time, so there is a need for sustainable waste management as done by the people of Manyaran Village. The waste management action in Manyaran Village is not only the responsibility of the kelurahan level but also at the RW level which has begun to initiate waste sorting.Manyaran Village is one of the assisted areas of the City and Regional Planning Department, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University, in terms of environmental management towards the thematic village of waste sorting. During the 3 years period, Undip worked with NGO Mercy Corp Indonesia to assist the community in waste management and now is the fourth year in community assistance in waste management. Based on the results of community aspirations, the need for waste management for 2019 is the use of plastic waste to make eco brick. Ecobrick is a building brick made from plastic waste where its use can be used repeatedly. The target of this community service activity is to make eco brick a useful form, for example, chairs, tables. The expected outcome of this service activity is to make the Manyaran Village as a target area of the Regional and City Planning Department, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University.
