Abstract

The economic crisis is inevitable in the world economy. The economic crisis is one form of uncertainty in the business world. Although it can not be avoided, the economic crisis can be predicted in advance. So, when the company experienced financial distress during the economic crisis, not the cause of the economic crisis, but the incompetence of managers of those companies. To rise from financial distress, the company needs an injection of funds from investors. The problem is how to attract investors to want to invest in companies that are experiencing financial distress. To overcome this problem, conservative method applied to recording the company noted that financial statements. Due to accounting conservatism led the company has hidden reserves that can be used when experiencing financial hardship. From the results of the discussion can be concluded that (1) management uses of accounting conservatism in order to attract investors to invest even though the company is experiencing financial distress, (2) conservatism is used to reduce the excessive optimism of management and shareholders, (3) conservatism used to be restrict managers to take action to exaggerate earnings and manipulate financial statements.

Abstract

Using the non-parametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the parametric method of Stochastic Frontier Approach (SPA), this study investigates the efficiency of the Islamic Banking recent operations in Indonesia over the period 2005 to 2007. In specifying input-output variables of Islamic banks, the intermediation approach is selected as it is in line with the principle of Islamic financial system. The attributions of technical efficiency (utilization of capacity) and scale efficiency (optimality of scale achieved) are identified. The principal findings for the period under study indicated that technical and scale efficiency scores are improving but 100 percent optimal during research period. According to SFA approach, closer to 100 percent means a bank acts efficiently. Overall, the result shows that Islamic banks suffer slight inefficiencies during the period 2005-2007, and tend to be increasing. The study has several important policy implications to offer, one of which is that it could be taken as a guideline for the Indonesian government to chart a policy on banking deregulation and mergers. Moreover, the study provides some information and identifies the sourceof inefficiency, vyhich could, in turn, be used to assist banks’ managements to overcome the problems of inefficiency.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the function of the regional development banks (BPD) as an intermediary institution using the loan to deposit ratio (LDR) and Bank Indonesia Certificate to deposit ratio (SDR) and efficiency performance with data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach with data during 2006-2007 covering 26 BPD in Indonesia. The result of study indicates that the regional development banks do not play its optimal role as the intermediary institution and efficiency performance do not achieve the level of maximum 100 persen. For getting the optimal function of banking intermediary and promoting better efficiencies, BPD needs to design some steps of the grand strategy that can be developed in the future, that is: the limitation of funds placed by BPD in Bank Indonesia Certificate notes, inter BPD networking, focus on market segmentation, diversification source of funds, and creating local credit guaranting institutions. Keywords: bank efficiency, bank intermediary, loan to deposit ratio (LDR), SBI to deposit ratio (SDR), data envelopment analysis (DEA)

Abstract

There are a wide variety of monetary models of exchange rate determination, all of which are outgrowth and extension of the basic flexible-price version pioneered by Frenkel (1978) and Bilson (1978). The research aims to know and prove by empiri-cal means the flexible price monetary model is relevant and advantageous to explain the fluctuation of exchange rate rupiah. The methodology involves testing first two assumption of the monetary model, namely, the price arbitrage (unified goods market) and the existence of a stable money demand function. Having these assumption held, the estimation of fluctuation in exchange rate in 1997-2005 was estimated using the flexible price monetary model developed for this purpose. Estimation of fluctuation in exchange rate suggest that the actual behavior of exchange rate in the period 1997 – 2005 is highly consistent with prediction of the flexible price monetary model. Fluctuation in exchange rate of Indonesia was largely explained by such variables as domestic money demand, domestic income and expected inflation, consistent with hypothesis of the flexible price monetary model.
