Abstract

This  paper  deals   with  a study  on  the  infestation   intensity  of subterranean   termites  on three soil types  in clear felled rubber plantation areas in West Java. The soil types  predominating the  areas are  Red  Podzolic,  Brown Latosol  and Dark Grey  Grumusol. The  results  reveal   that  four  species  of  termite  Microtermes insperatus Kemner,   M. incertoides Holmgren, Macrotennes gilvus   (Hagen)  and  Capritermes buitenzorgi  Holmgren   are found   in these  areas pie  termites   were  mostly found  on  the  Dark  Grey Grumusol   soil,   and  the  least number  of  termite  was found  at the Red Podzolic  soil. The  results  also reveal  that  the  soil  type  gave significant  effect to  the  infestation   intensity  of subterranean   termite, but  it did  not give any effect  to the community  of the termite.

Abstract

The study was carried  out at Cikampek on three different soil types  namely  Red  Latosol,  Redish Brown Latosol  and Lateritie  Association; Complex of  Yellowish  Red Podzolic, Yellow  Podzolic  and  Regosol; Complex of Grumusol, Regosol and  Mediteran.Odontotermes  grandiceps Holmgren, Microtermes insperatus Kemner  and Macrotermes   gilvus (Hagen) seems  to  be common  species  in  the  above  locations. The  highest  density   was found on  Complex of  Yellowish  Red Podzolic, Yellow  Podzolic  and Regosol  (123  termites per  test  block), while   the  lowest  one  was found   on  Complex  of  Grumusol, Regosol  and Mediteran   (14  termites  per  test block). Termite attack intensity during  the  first,  second,  third  and fourth  period  of observation  in the three  soil types  were different.

Abstract

A preliminary   study   on  the  effect  of  air humidity   to  infestation   intensity,  feeding  activity   and survival of  the dry- wood  termite  Cryptotermes  cynocephalus   Light,   has been  conducted   by  using flue levels of humidity i.e  37.75%;  70.21%; 83.38%;   87.75%  and 97.0%.The  salts  CaCl2,   NaCl, KCl and K2S04 were  respectively used to control the  air  humidity   of  37.73%  to 87.75%; whereas  H20   was used  to control   the  air humidity   of  97.0%.  Rubber  wood  samples  of  1.5  cm  by  2.5 cm  by  5.0  cm  with a  hole  of  3 cm  by  1 cm  were prepared   to feed  the  termite  workers. The  results  reveal that  the  lowest  feeding activity, infestation   intensity   and  survival   of  the  dry-wood  termite   were indicated   by  the  37.73%  air humidity;   where as the  highest  feeding activity and  survival of  the  termite  were  indicated by  the  90% air humidity.   Meanwhile  there  were no significant   influence   of  infestation   intensity   within   the air  humidity   of  more   than  70%.

Abstract

Pink oyster   mushroom (Pleurotus  flabellatus)  was  cultivated   on  logs of  six  wood  species,   i.e.  hamerang  (Ficus grossularoides Burn.f.),  jeungjing   (Albizia   falcataria   (L.)  Fosb.),  jirak  (Symplocos fasciculata Zoll.), kihuut   (Vernonia arborea  Ham.),   manii  (Maesopsis eminii  Engl.)  and seuseureuhan   (Piper aduncum L.).  The  logs were  kept  slanted  on an angle of  ± 60°  with  bamboo  supports   in a house  at Gunung Bunder  Forest  Complex, Bogor,  The mature  mushroom   were harvested  daily. The logs start producing  fungus  two  months  after inoculation. The average yield per log during one year observation was 581.8 g (hamerang,) 178.83g (manii),  69.23g (jeungjing), 25.47  g (kihuut), 19.44g  (jirak), and 18.47 g (seuseureuhan). The average yield  per month  per  m3 of log was obtained  from  hamerang  7.52 kg,  man ii 1. 72 kg, jeungjing  0.58 6 kg, seuseureuhan   0.44  kg.  jirak  0.321 kg and kihuut   0.244  kg.The total yield  in one year observation  was obtained  from  hamerang  (90.20 kg),  manii (20.67 kg), jeungjing  (7.03 kg),  seuseureuhan (5.3kg), jirak  (3.85kg)  and kihuut (2.93  kg) per  m3  of log.
