Abstract

The act to boost nation building is not separated from the role of a political actor who represents a country. Donald Trump’s decision to finally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is very contrary to US foreign policy over the past 7 decades, which makes it controversial. This raises questions about the dominance of power over a figure of the President of United States in representing his role as a political actor. This research aims to analyze the dominance of power over a figure of Donald Trump as The President of United States through his official presidential speech on recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Using a discourse analysis by Teun A. Van Dijk, this research is done by analyzing structures of language based on the full transcript of the video, as The basic assumption of the study of critical discourse is that the language used for various functions has various consequences, whether it is governing, influencing, deciphering, filing, manipulating moving groups or persuading. It can also be implied that certain statement of a powerful political leader can be used to support nation building, in this case is the United States as a superpower.

Abstract

Abstrak - Poligami selalu menjadi diskusi yang menarik karena melahirkan dua kelompok yang selalu dalam posisi pro dan kontra di masyarakat. Hal ini mendorong peneliti untuk melakukan penelitian mengenai wacana poligami melalui media film yang menggambarkan realita poligami berdasarkan gambaran sutradara yang kemudian ditonton oleh subjek penelitian guna melihat resepsi subjek atas wacana poligami. Film “Berbagi Suami” diangkat menjadi objek penelitian yang berusaha memandang persoalan ini dari kacamata subjek dan objek di dalam film tersebut, terutama dalam membahas isu poligami. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan menggunakan strategi fenomenologi. Subyek penelitian berfokus pada penonton film “Berbagi Suami”, yakni pria muslim yang memiliki status marital monogami. Untuk mendapatkan makna dari subjek dan objek, maka peneliti menganalisis fenomena poligami berdasarkan percakapan antar tokoh dan potongan adegan pada film “Berbagi Suami”. Pada penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan teori resepsi encoding-decoding oleh Stuart Hall dengan menggunakan tiga konsep Dominant Hegemonik, Negotiated, Oppositional. Abstract – Polygamy has always been an interesting discussion because it gave birth to two groups that were always in pro and contra positions in the community. This encourages researchers to conduct research on polygamy discourse through film media that describes the reality of polygamy based on the description of the director who is then watched by the subject of research to see the reception of the subject of the polygamy discourse. The film "Berbagi Suami" was appointed as the object of research that sought to view this issue from the perspective of the subject and object in the film, especially in discussing the issue of polygamy. This study uses a qualitative approach using phenomenology strategies. The research subjects focused on the audience of the film "Berbagi Suami", namely Muslim men who have monogamous marital status. To get the meaning of the subject and object, the researcher analyzed the phenomenon of polygamy based on conversations between characters and pieces of scenes in the film "Berbagi Suami". In this study the researcher used the reception theory of encoding-decoding by Stuart Hall using three Dominant Hegemonic concepts, Negotiated, Oppositional.
