Abstract

This research focuses to identify the types and the reasons of swearing for characters of Deadpool movie. It uses a qualitative method to analyzing the data that are found. It finds 81 data of types of swearing, and 83 data of reasons of swearing out of 83 data. The data of this research are in the form of sentences, words spoken by the characters. This research finds that the types of swearing uttered by the characters of Deadpool movie can be classified into five types, there are, Dyphemistic Swearing (DS), Abusive Swearing (AS), Idiomatic Swearing (IS), Emphatic Swearing (ES), and Cathartic Swearing (CS). In addition, it also found the the reason of swearing that is consist of three motives. There are, Psychological motives (PM), Social Motives (SM), and Linguistic Motives (LM). From this research, it can be concluded that emphatic swearing is the most used swearing expression and psychological motives is the most dominant reasons spoken by the characters.

Abstract

Novel is one type of literary works. Novel as a fiction offers an imaginative world that is not much different with the reality. In process of writing, the authors use figurative language to convey the ideas. The use of appropriate figurative language will give the effect of aesthetic, so the readers will be more interested to know and imagine what the actual meaning from that figurative language which is conveyed. This research focuses on investigating the four kinds of figurative language, they are simile (clear and unclear similarity), hyperbole, personification and metaphor in the novel entitled If I Stay by Gayle Forman. The aims of this research are to find out the characteristics of simile (clear and unclear similarity), hyperbole, personification, and metaphor and to find out the most frequently figure of speech category used in If I Stay’s novel. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the figures of speech in the If I Stay’s novel. As the conclusion, clear similarity has characteristics like there are vehicle, tenor, connector (like, as such, etc), and contain the details of the similarity, while unclear similarity has characteristics which there are vehicle, tenor, connector (like, as such, etc), and do not contain the details of the similarity. Hyperbole has the characteristic that is overstatement or say something much bigger than the real. Personification has the characteristic that is human being or gives human attributes to nonhuman. The characteristics of metaphor which there are vehicle and tenor but there isn’t connector (like, as such, etc). From the four kinds of figures of speech are taken to be analysis, there are 169 times of figurative language occurrence, 74 times (44%) of simile, 72 times (43%) of hyperbole, 12 times ( 7%) of personification and  11 times ( 6%) of metaphor. The most dominant figurative language category used in this novel is simile.Keywords: Figurative Speech, Simile, Hyperbole, Personification, Metaphor.

Abstract

The writer conducts this research to find what translation techniques which are applied by the translator in translating cultural words in the novel Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, and translated by Silamurti Nugroho. Here the writer uses the theory of Molina and Albir, because the writer thinks that the theory of Molina and Albir is the most appropriate theory for this research topic. The writer here uses qualitative and quantitative method in order to reach the goal of this research. The writer employs herself to collect data; Read the two versions of novel, they are Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and Makan, Doa, Cinta which is translated by Silamurti Nugroho, mark all the cultural words in the English version of the novel, find the equivalent in Indonesian version of the novel, classify the cultural words based on Newmark’s cultural words categories, select some of the data that are most appropriate with Newmark’s cultural words categories, and analyzed the selected data by using Molina and Albir’s theory of translation techniques. The result of this study shows that: eight translation techniques are applied by the translator in translating those cultural words.Keywords: Cultural Words, Translation Techniques Translation.

Abstract

Aplikasi word completion diadaptasi berdasarkan kebutuhan seorang individu mengetik di keyboard komputer. Word Completion digunakan untuk mempermudah kinerja pengetikan dan sekaligus sebagaibentuk perpaduan antara fungsi ejaan, tata bahasa dan koreksi manual. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah merancang piranti lunak untuk membantu keterbatasan anak learning disability dalam mengetik menggunakan keyboard. Ciri khas anak learning disability adalah sering mengoptimalkan pandangan mata untuk mengenal suatu kata, sehingga alat bantu ini dirancang dengan tampilan warna yang menarik dan ukuran huruf yang relatif lebih besar dibanding ukuran pengetikan pada umumnya. Abjad dengan ukuran yang cukup besar dapat lebih mudah dikenali dan secara otomatis memunculkan notifikasi pilihan yang diinginkan. Melalui uji coba, diperoleh hasil bahwa word completion akan berfungsi ketika anak mengetik dengan pilihan 1 karakter (fonem), 2 karakter (silabel) dan multi silabel (kata ) untuk menemukan kata yang diinginkan.
