Abstract

This study had been conducted in October – November 2014. This study aims to know about the diversity of macroalgae in Kasiak Gadang Island, Nirwana Beach, Padang, West Sumatra Indonesia. The method used in this research is line and belt transect. The result of this study is five species of macroalgae founded on this island. There are Padine minor, Sargassum crassifolium, Sargassum cristaefolium, Turbinaria decurrens, and Halimeda sp. Based on relative density, P. minor had 67.15% at Station I and 51.72% at Station II. S. crassifolium had 83.52% at Station III. T. decurrens had 50.86% at Station IV. The index of diversity of macroalgae in Kasiak Gadang Island is about 0.48 – 1.27. According to the diversity index criteria, macroalgae diversity in this island is considered being in low.

Abstract

Fish cultivators generally experience difficulties providing quality artificial feed (pellets) due to a lack of knowledge and skills in processing technology and making alternative feeds. Besides that, the costs incurred for feed procurement are relatively large, reaching 70 - 80% of the total production costs. However, the provision of feed is often an obstacle because, in addition to the increasingly high price, the quality of available feed does not always match the nutritional needs needed by Fish. The provision of quality feed for intensively cultivated tilapia dramatically affects the resulting growth and productivity. The higher the quality of the feed, the production will also increase. One of the technologies that can be applied to overcome this problem is the manufacture of alternative formulated diets using local raw materials. The method used in this service activity is the transfer of knowledge presented in the socialization activities in the form of 1) introduction to the types of alternative fish feed ingredients sourced from the area, (2) preparation of artificial tilapia feed formulations, (3) manufacturing technology artificial feed (pellets) and 4) monitoring and assistance. The socialization was carried out in the form of a lecture and was followed by a question and answer session. The results of farmer activities recognize the types of local feed that can be used as fish feed, know the preparation of feed formulations, and alternative artificial feed manufacturing technologies. The knowledge and skills possessed by fish cultivators are expected to overcome the difficulties of fish farmers in providing feed so that fish production and cultivation business increase.

Abstract

We experimentally studied the effect of organic mulches on weeds and yield of green beans (Phaseolus radiatus L.) have been conducted at green house and Laboratory of Plant Ecology, Departement of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Andalas University, Padang, from January to May 2014. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of different mulches (Mikania micrantha and Tithonia diversifolia) on weeds and yield of green beans. The experiment used nested design with eight treatments and three replications. The first factor (factor A) was two kinds of mulch (i.e Mikania micrantha and Tithonia diversifolia). While the second factor (factor B) was the given doses of mulch (i.e 0 g/polybag, 300 g/polybag, 600 g/polybag and 900 g/polybag). The results showed that Mikania micrantha mulch gave the stronger effect to reduce weed numbers. Mikania micrantha mulch on 900 g/polybag increased plant height and Mikania micrantha mulch on 300 g/polybag increased seed yield. Whereas Tithonia diversifolia mulch on 600 g/polybag increased plant height and the number of primary branches and Tithonia diversifolia mulch on 300 g/polybag increased seed yield.

Abstract

An experiment of giving mulch of rice straw (Oryza sativa) on weeds and crop production soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr) has been carried out at the Laboratory of Plant Ecology, Andalas University, Padang from June to September 2013. The purpose of this study was to determine and define how mulch of rice straw suppress weed growth and increase the production of soybeans. This experiment used a Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and five replications. The result showed that rice straw mulching of 300g/10kg can suppressed the growth of weeds, and rice straw mulching of 500g/10kg could increase soybean production. All treatments showed significantly influence on the increase weight of soybeans product. Keyword: mulch, rice straw, soybean, weeds

Abstract

Vegetation analysis of weeds at rubber plantation (Hevea brasiliensis Mull.Arg.) at Batang Kapas, Pesisir Selatan, was carried out from March to April 2013. The weeds were sampled purposively using plot quadrat method at three and six years old of rubber plantations. There were totally 13 families, 23 genera dan 27 species of weeds found in the two types of rubber plantations. The two locations were dominated by different species of weeds. Borreria alata has the highest Summed Dominance Ratio (SDR) at three years and Scleria sumatrensis at six years old of rubber  plantations. Diversity indices were relative moderate (2,17 at three years old and 2,2 at six years old rubber plantations) in both locations and species similarity between the two location were low (45,7%).

Abstract

The stomatal features of the leaves of several species of various life forms that grow around the cement factory are investigated with the aim of examining the anatomical modifications of the leaves which increase their tolerance and survival in the presence of cement dust pollution. In addition, the chlorophyll content in the leaves has also been examined. In comparison, the same study has also been carried out for the composition of the same species in unaffected locations. Three different life forms of the plant were investigated over two sites: trees, represented by Polyalthia longifolia, Acacia auriculiformis, Persea americana, and Mangifera indica; shrubs by Syzygium myrtifolium, and Ixora javanica; and herbs by Rhoe and Aglaonema. The average stomata density in the affected area was 173.16 /mm2, while it could reach 244.96 /mm2 at the control site. The same trend was also shown by the chlorophyll content. The Independent T-test revealed a significant difference (p-value = 0.037). Adaptability in terms of having chlorophyll content from all three life forms at different sites was also available in this discussion. Herbs has the greatest difference between sites (0.33 μg/mL), followed by shrubs (0.31 μg/mL) and then trees (0.2 μg/mL). The Two way ANOVA test showed that both life forms and sites significantly influenced the content of chlorophyll (p-value = 0.00). However, there was no interaction between sites and life forms in influencing chlorophyll content (p value=0.652). In conclusion, In all three life forms, either stomatal density or chlorophyll content decreases with pollution.
