Abstract

The objectives of this study was to assess the farming system of organic lowland paddy to soil pollution compared with conventional farming system in Deli Serdang Regency. An environmental assesment in this research as limited to the soil pollution caused by pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Soil samples were grouped into low and upper layers. Each soil composites was collected from ten sampling points. Which each consist of 5 sampling points of organic paddy farming system and 5 sampling points of conventional paddy farming  system. The results showed that the levels of pesticides and nitrate in paddy soil was influenced by soil layers, meanwhile although was not statistically significant, the levels of pesticides and nitrate increased due to the way of cultivation. The results indicated that in general the soil pollution on organic paddy farming system was lower than conventional farming. Levels of pesticides and nitrate in the soil layer 20-40 cm was higher than levels of pesticides in the 0-20 cm. Pesticides and nitrate leached by water gets into the deeper layers of soil. The increased level of pesticides in soil of conventional farming was higher 0.96 ppm during the dry season and lowest 0.38 ppm in the rainy season compared with organic farming. The increased level of nitrate in soil of conventional farming was higher 0.45 ppm during the rainy season compared with organic farming, however in the dry season, the level of nitrate in conventional farming was lowest 2.32 ppm compared with organic farming. Keywords: conventional farming; organic farming; paddy; sustainability

Abstract

Characteristics and Toxicity of Nanoemulsion Formulations of Piper retrofractum and Tagetes erecta Extract Mixtures. Nanotechnology has been used in the developing of botanical insecticide formulation for improving its stability and effectiveness. The research was aimed to make nanoemulsion formulations of Piper retrofractum fruits and Tagetes erecta flowers extracts and to evaluate their toxicity against brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens [Stål]) nymphs. The development of nanoemulsion formulaions was carried out by using the low energy method with inversion phase emulsification.  The toxicity of the four formulations was tested against brown planthopper nymphs using a contact method. Four nanoemulsion formulations were obtained.  The study showed that in the developing of the formulations, the type and level of emulsifier materials affected the physical characteristics of formulas, such as stability, surface tension, viscosity, particle size, and particle morphology. The nanoemulsion formulation containing 1% of the mixture of P. retrofractum fruits and T. erecta flowers extracts, 1.75% Triton X-100 emulsifier showed the highest toxic on the brown planthopper nymph, with the LC95 value was 0.15%.  The study indicates that nanoemulsion formulation of P. retrofractum and T. erecta extracts are potential to be developed as botanical insecticide to control brown planthopper of rice.

Abstract

Tanaman kakao (Theobroma cacao) menghasilkan biji. The cocoa plants (Theobroma cacao) produce seeds. The seeds are covered by pulp when it is harvested. Then these seeds were fermented for three days to transform them becoming cocoa seeds and the fermentation would produce liquid wastes. The study aims to test the attractiveness of fruit flies to the processed liquid cocoa wastes and to identify the chemical compounds which attract fruit flies. The study was conducted in the laboratory, beginning from the processing of cocoa wastes, the testing of the attractiveness of B. carambolae to wastes and to identify the chemical compounds of the processed cocoa wastes. The result showed that males and females B. carambolae were attracted to the wastes. The processed cocoa wastes contain various chemical compounds, i.e. ammonia; ethyl-2-hydroxy propanoate; 7-dodecenyl acetate; acetamide compounds; 3,5 dihydroxy-2-methyl-5,6-dihydropyrane; hydroxyl methylfurfurol; and 1-undecyne derivates.

Abstract

Plants extracts used for botanical insecticides do not only influence the mortality but also the feeding activity of insects. The aim of this test was to determine the activity of the extract of Madura tobacco leaf on the feeding activity of the third instar of beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua. There were two test methods, choice and no-choice feeding tests. The design of each test was a completely randomized design (CRD), with six treatment concentrations and one control, replicated five times. The results showed that the exposure of tobacco leaf extracts with the choice feeding: (1) had significant effect on the leaf weight consumed at all concentration compared to the controls, (2) act as antifeedant against the larvae of S. exigua with the index of food consumption barrier ranging from 17.51 to 38.12%; while the extract of tobacco leaf on the no-choice feeding test: (3) had significantly effect on the weight of leaves consumed compared to the control on the concentrations of > 0.21%, and (4) was antifeedant with the index of food consumption barrier higher (22.87 to 69.39%) than the choice feeding (17.51 to 38.12%).

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the characteristics of the community around tourist sites. This research uses descriptive study where data obtained from direct interviews with sources of data and direct observation in the study site. Methods of data collection is the way researchers get the data required in the conduct of research on sources of research data. It was concluded that the characteristics of the surrounding communities with the development of attractions like Mekarsari showed the positive impact, more choice of livelihood for the inhabitants of surrounding areas such as whether they wish to be employees, as entrepreneurship, or as traders. However, these positive effects are not accompanied by increased levels of public education around the village Mekarsari. This is due to the understanding of higher education has not been considered important, and also the villagers consider that the modest education (elementary, senior high school, high school) has been able to earn money, whether as laborers, trade or wiraswata (open stalls).
