Abstract

Hematocrit is an examination to determine the ratio of erythrocytes to blood volume or erythrocyte volume in 100 ml of blood, which is set in %. In taking blood volume, the installation of a tourniquet on blood collection can affect the results of the examination of several laboratory parameters. In the laboratory, a tourniquet is used before taking venous blood in order to make the blood vessels appear dilated and protruding so that the puncture site can be determined easily. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of holding time on blood sampling on hematocrit levels using the normal time of 1 minute and holding time of 1 minute. This type of cross-sectional research was conducted at the Hematology Laboratory of the Muhammadiyah Palembang Institute of Health Sciences and Technology. The population is 34 students of DIV TLM Study Program. The results showed that the average blood hematocrit level with a sample of holding time <1 minute was 9.79 mg/dL, while the average blood hematocrit level with a sample of holding time >1 minute was 10.11 mg/dL. The average difference between samples and the length of time they hold is 0.32 mg/dL. Data analysis using unpaired test obtained p value = 0.000. The conclusion from this study is that damming for more than 1 minute can affect hematocrit levels higher than holding under 1 minute.
