Abstract

This study aims to analyse management business and hospitality students’ difficulties in speaking and their strategies to improve them. This study was qualitative research using descriptive qualitative analysis. There were 10 students used as respondents. They were interviewed regarding their difficulties encountered in speaking English and their tactics to solve the problems. The research showed that there some difficulties faced by students such as lack of confidence, pronunciation, vocabularies, and grammar. However, they also implement some strategies to enhance their speaking skill such as memorize vocabularies, watch video in English, listen English song, read article in twitter, practice speaking in front of mirror, watch youtube, tiktok, learn from people who are smarter from them and use application such as hilokal to interact with people from other countries. It is recommended that the emphasis of teaching and learning in speaking should focus more on how to build the students’ self confidence so that they will have the confidence to interact with their friends and teachers. Abstract

This study aims: (1) to find out and analyze from the semiotic aspect of verbal signs, visual signs, signifiers, and denotations of property advertisements on social media Facebook. (2) To determine the type of language style used in property advertisements in social media Facebook. The data source of this research is verbal form in the form of persuasive text contained in property advertisements on social media Facebook. The results showed that: (1) The parts contained in the advertisement were the title, company name, text, and symbols. The four parts are related to each other. The titles of the four advertisements are written in an ambiguous manner so as to arouse the curiosity of potential consumers to see the contents of the advertisement further. The relationship between signs and their references in the form of icons, indexes, and symbols in the analyzed advertisements can be found through semiotic analysis. The advertisement consists of a title, signature, text, and slogan. (2) The language style can be found in the title and text of the advertisement that after being analyzed, in the four advertisements can be found three kinds of language style ellipsis, repetition and asindenton Keywords: semiotics, advertising, language style, social media Facebook

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Diploma III Management Food and Beverage students’ perception and expectation regarding the use of dialogue and presentation in English Language Learning in Faculty of Tourism, Triatma Mulya University. The sample used was 6 Students of Management Food and Beverage. The methods used to collect data was deep interviews to analyze their perceptions and expectations about the use of dialog and presentation. In addition to this, the supporting data was collected through online publications. The research shows that most of the students’ opinions are positive. Students think that those two techniques can help them to improve their English skills, especially speaking and listening. They feel more confident speaking English because they are provided activities where they must speak in front of their friends and receive feedback from teachers and friends which makes them know how to do better in the next meeting. In terms of expectations, students expect that these two methods can improve their self-confidence and expand their English. They hope that after studying English at University, they will have better preparation to work in the industry. They think through these methods they can improve their public speaking so that they can be professional workers. They consider that presentation and dialogue can enrich their vocabulary and grammatical structure. Even though in the classroom each student has a different level of English. They conclude that they have the same expectation, which is to have better English. Keywords: Dialogue, Presentations, Perception, Expectation
