Abstract

Uca annulipes are deposit feeder crab which is widely distributed in Indonesian mangrove areas. The systematic study of the species completely based on the qualitative character without the quantitative one. This study describes the variation in quantitative characters of U. annulipes from different locations in Indonesia. Descriptive method with univariate and multivariate analyses based on quantitative character ratio was used in this study. The univariate analysis showed that the highest value of either the quantitative character or quantitative character ratio was found from the western Indonesian population.  Meanwhile, the multivariate analysis showed that U. annulipes from western Indonesia, Sulawesi, and Nusa Tenggara have a discrete cluster.

Abstract

Murniati, D.C. 2009. Comparative spoon tiped setae coverage of the secondmaxilliped of Uca spp. (Brachyrura: Ocypodidae). Zoo Indonesia 18(1): 1-7. Uca iswell known as a group of small, intertidal Ocypodid crab and it is characterized bysexual dimorphism and males have asymmetry chelipeds. Uca spp. has spoon tipedsetae for feeding. The aim of this study was to compare the spoon tiped setae coverageof the second maxilliped of Uca spp. Uca annulipes, U. coarctata and U. triangulariswere used in this study. The second maxilliped of each crab was removed andobserved under a stereo and a compound microscopes. Nonparametric two-factoranalysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences in spoon tipedsetae coverage among U. annulipes, U. coarctata and U. triangularis. However, therewas no difference in spoon tiped setae coverage among female, male and juvenile. This observation shows that this character is not affected by sex and age.

Abstract

Mangrove and estuary ecosystem has highly biodiversity of benthic fauna. Crabs are the common benthic fauna found in this ecosystem. West Bali National Park is one area in Indonesia that has a good condition of mangrove and estuary ecosystem. The present study was done to provide data of the species composition of crabs in West Bali National Park. Sampling was undertaken on June 2009 in Teluk Gilimanuk, Teluk Terima and Teluk Banyuwedang. From a total 411 of crabs specimens, the highest species number was found in Teluk Terima.

Abstract

Abstract

Mangrove and estuary ecosystems are important components of the intertidal area which is the habitat of Ocypodid crabs. The study of Ocypodid crabs in Ujung Kulon National Park is still limited, while its habitat is decreasing. This study was conducted to explore the Ocypodid crabs (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) composition in mangrove and estuary ecosystems in Ujung Kulon National Park. Crabs species collection was carried out in Legon Cibariang, Panaitan Island and Cikawung, Ujung Kulon National Park. Four species of Ocypodid crabs, Ocypode ceratophthalma (Pallas, 1772), Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837), U. coarctata (H. Milne Edwards, 1852) and U. triangularis (A. Milne Edwards, 1873) were successfully collected from mangrove and estuary ecosystems. The species composition of Ocypodidae in Cikawung were more various than in Legon Cibariang.
