This study considered causal comparative study, the study population is a manufacturing company listed on the Stock Exchange from 2007 until 2010. Based on purposive sampling method obtained 224 samples. The type of data used are secondary data. Data obtained from www.idx.co.id. The method of analysis used is multiple regression analysis. The research proves that (1) current ratio has positive and unsignificant effect on ROE, (2) debt ratio has negative and unsignificant effect on ROE, (3) total asset turnover has positive and significant effect on ROE. Thus, the major determinant of the profitability of a company is the total asset turnover, for which the company manufactures and investors should pay attention to these variables.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of financing preference and the level of education of entrepreneurs on quintile of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) revenue in Indonesia. The data used in this research is IFLS data (Indonesian Family Life Survey) waves 4 and 5 with a total sample of 10,336 business units that meet the criteria. Considering the heterogeneous characteristics of the data and the presence of outliers, this study used quantile regression method with a level of confidence (∝=0.05). The results of the analysis show that the education level of entrepreneurs has a positive effect on MSEs revenue and the effect is stronger on the higher MSEs revenue quantile. Meanwhile, the financing preference from own capital generates lower income compared to external or combined sources of financing and the difference is greater in the higher MSEs revenue quintile.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of cognitive skills, risk preferences, and gender on the profit of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Indonesia. This study uses non-agricultural business data in the fifth Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) wave. A total of 4.232 MSE met the sample criteria and were analyzed using the quantile regression method in 3 locations, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75. This method offers a novelty analysis not only in the average but also differentiated into three quantiles representing 3 clusters of the MSE scale, the lowest 25 percent, the median, and the highest 25 percent scale of profit. From the analysis results, it can be concluded that the cognitive skills and risk preferences of MSE entrepreneurs only affect the MSE profit at highest quantile (q0.75). As for gender issues, MSEs run by male entrepreneurs generate higher profits than MSEs run by female entrepreneurs, but the difference in profits gets smaller in larger business scale quantiles. Thus, this research practically implies that a different strategy is needed in developing MSE in the future. Keywords: Micro and small enterprises, cognitive skills, risk preference, gender, quantile regression.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of financial literacy as measured by ownership of savings accounts and knowledge of the official financial institutions providing loans, and the level of education on the profits of Micro and Small Enterprises in Indonesia. By considering the characteristics of heterogeneous data and outliers, this study uses a quantile regression method with a confidence level (∝ = 0.05). The data used is secondary data from IFLS (Indonesia Family Life Survey) waves 4 and 5. 8,118 MSEs meet the criteria as samples. The analysis results show that the savings ownership of MSE owners has a significant positive effect on the MSE profit quantile on all business scales compared to MSE owners who do not have a savings account. Still, the effect is lower in the large quantile group. Furthermore, knowledge of lenders' official financial institutions has a significant positive impact on MSE profit quantiles across all business scales compared to MSE owners who do not know lenders’ official financial institutions; the effect is lower in the larger MSE income quintile group. Meanwhile, the education level of MSE actors has a significant positive impact, but only on the medium to high-scale MSE; the effect is higher for the large MSE profit quintile group.
