Abstract

The emergence of resistance of Plasmodium that infect humans against malaria eradication Artemisinin add to the difficulty. Therefore it is necessary to search for new antimalarial drugs derived from natural or synthetic materials other than the vaccine have not been successful.     The results of fractionation or isolation of the ethanol extract of bitter herbs (Andrographis paniculata Nees) and ethanol extracts obtained andrographolide compound which is the main active substance of bitter herbs belonging to the lactone.     Test antimalarial activity of ethanol extract and andrographolide compounds against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro studies suggest that and rographolide compound said to have anti-malarial activity as compared to active ethanol extract with IC50 values of 0.220 μg/ml.     Test the effect of andrographolide compounds bitter herbs (Andrographis paniculata Nees) on the development and morphology of the parasite stages of P. falciparum in vitro studies suggest that there are barriers to the development stage of the parasitic stage and schizont stage tropozoit be schizont stage into ring -stage parasites grow and cause an abnormal morphology.     The conclusion of this study is that the antimalarial herb bitter (Andrographis paniculata Nees) especially andrographolide compound said to have anti-malarial activity as in vitro , causing developmental delays or obstacles stage parasites grow and cause an abnormal morphology. Therefore antimalarial bitter herbs in this compound andrographolide potentially be used as an antimalarial drug that is new blood skizontisidal.

Abstract

Background: Organophosphate insecticides had been used in Kupang City of East Nusa Tenggara Province far before Kupang City was established in 1996. Determination of susceptibility status toward organophosphate insecticides i.e. temephos and malathion in Kupang City have never been conducted. This research purpose is to know Ae. aegypti larva susceptibility status from several villages in Kupang City of East Nusa Tenggara Province toward organophosphate insecticides, particularly temephos and malathion with the biological and biochemical test. Research Method: This is pure experimental research with The Posttest-Only Control Group Design for biological test and non-experimental tests with descriptive and analytical designs for the biochemical test. Material and method of a biological test are referred to test regulation by WHO (1996), whereas biochemical test is referred to Lee’s method (1991). Result: a Biological test using diagnostic dosage reveals that Ae. aegypti larva from several villages being tested has resistant (RR) status toward temephos with an average larva mortality rate of <80% and susceptible (SS) status toward malathion with an average larva mortality rate of >99%. The result of qualitative and quantitative biochemical test shows that 3 villages have tolerant (SR) status with an average score of 2,0-2,5; 5 villages susceptible (SS) status with an average score of <2. The result of the quantitative biochemical test shows that 8 villages have susceptible (SS) status with AV value of <0,700, 5 villages have tolerant (SR) status with AV value of 0,700-0,900 and 2 villages have resistant (RR) status with AV value of >0,900. The statistic analysis with Oneway ANOVA significant 5% rejects the null hypothesis (H0) which means that there has been a status decrease of Ae. aegypti mosquito larva susceptibility to organophosphate insecticides. Conclusion: Temephos insecticide is not relevant anymore to be used, and it is still relevant to use malathion in the Ae. aegypti mosquito control program in several villages in Kupang City of East Nusa Tenggara Province. Research result proves that susceptibility status decrease of tested mosquito larva in a biochemical test is known to be not caused by increasing activity nonspecific of esterase and acetylcholinesterase insensitivity, but may be caused by other the factors that have not been known.

Abstract

Worm disease does not cause death but can affect digestion, absorption and metabolism of food. Helminthiasis figure in Kupang City in particular were not recorded properly, but when viewed from its risk factor then it was endemic because of sanitary conditions, personal hygiene, behavior, and the provision of clean water is still low. This study aim to identify the presence of worm’s eggs in the pupils nail and the correlation with clean and healthy living behavior of pupils. This analytic observational study used cross sectional design. The samples were primary school students as many as 50 people that were taken by random sampling. Data collection was through interviews and laboratory tests on stool samples and analyzed by using chi-square. Results found as many as 13 pupils (26%) were infested by worm eggsof Ascaris lumbricoides at their nail. There were no relation between the presence of worm eggs at pupils nail with gender (p=0.303), age (p=0.747), grade (p=0.643) and playing habits (p=1.000), but there is an association between the presence of worm eggs at elementary pupils nails with the latrine use (p=0.049) and personal hygiene (p=0.039). So that PHC expected to cooperate with the department of education improve the promotion and provision of facilities to support a clean and healthy behaviors for elementary school students.
