Abstract

This research showed that the biography of the author directly attached and gave an overview of the actual content of the novel. It was found in the relationship between Andrea Hirata as an author with his work entitled Laskar Pelangi. The objectives of this research were to find out the theme of the novel and the relationship between Laskar Pelangi novel and the life of Andrea Hirata. Descriptive qualitative method was carried out to analyze the data. The source of the data was taken from the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata. In collecting the data, some references related to Biographical criticism were applied. The data were analyzed by reading, analyzing and describing the content of the novel. It was concluded that the theme was the comlexity of the life of Ikal who was the representative of the author himself; they comprised 6 data dealing with the theme of the novel (social and cultural theme, religious theme, economical theme and educational theme) and 38 data related to his biography., It was proved that there was the relationsip between the author wih the content of Laskar Pelangi novel.

Abstract

In the teaching of language especially English, the lecturer can apply various materials and teaching methods/strategies; one of them is by using English literature . The use of Engglish literature can be said as an active method. It is said so because it enables considerable practice. The lecturer must naturally innitiate and direct this practice since it cannot possibly originate spontaniously. Literary work contains superiorities which cannot be found in other kinds of instruments, and which only can be conveyed through the use of language, in the teaching of language, literature can be the source of various examples of the language aspects since literature is provided with abundancy material. Both language and literary are related each other.

Abstract

This research aimed to implement Prediction Guide Method to Improve students’ achievement in mastering vocabulary. The subject of this research was the IX grade students of SMP Swasta Dr. Cipto Mangun Kusumo Perdagangan of 2015/2016 Academic Year. It consisted of one class with 32 students as the subject. The objectives was discover the improvement of the students’ achievement in mastering vocabulary by using Prediction Guide Method. This research was conducted by using class room action research. The technique analyzing the data was by qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were taken from diary note. The quantitative data were taken from the test which were carried out in two cycles and those two cycles were conducted in six meetings. the test were given to the students in the form of pre-test, post test I in the first cycle, and post test II in the second cycle. The result of data analysis showed that there wan an improvement on the students’ achievement inmastering vocabulary from each cycle. It was showed from the mean of pre-test which was 50,31. after Prediction Guide Method was applied in the first cycle, there was a improvement of the result of the students’ mean which was 64,68, and for the second cycle after reflection on the first cycle, there was an improvement of the students’mean which was 90,00. In other words, the students’achievement inmastering vocabulary was improved and based on dairy note, it showed that the motivation and excitement of the students when studying were also improved.

Abstract

This research aims at finding the students’ error in analyzing morfem. By applying descriptive qualitative quantitative method, the researcher analyzed the errors made by tke V semester students of English Education Program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education UMSU Medan of the academic year 2016/2017. Totally there were 394 students as the population and 40 students or 10 % were randomly taken as the sample who would be given a test in the form of multiple choice test with 4 options in each test number (according to supervisial basis ; addition, omission, substituition and ordering). The result of the test showed that submission was the highest error ; 263 or 66% error and the lowest one was ordering ; 245 error or 61 % of the total sample. Grammatical morfem was the dominan error ; 142 error or 14 % of all kinds of morfem.
