<![CDATA[This paper studies the politeness strategy and the tact maxim of refusal expressions proposed by the author. The study uses qualitative description used to explain the result. The data source is a Erai Tokoro ni Totsuideshimatta of Japanese drama. Thus, the result of the study was:There were five kinds of politeness strategies to be found in Erai Tokoro ni Totsuideshimatta drama. These strategies consisted of don’t do the FTA (Face Threatening Act) strategy, off record strategy, bald of record strategy, positive politeness strategy, and negative politeness strategy. Combination ofbald of record and negative politeness strategies were also found.Refusal of politeness can be seen from tact maxim and not only from the choice of refusal strategy and politeness strategy. However, the scale of advantage-disadvantage must also be seen in order to find where context would also affect the value of politeness of a speech.]]>
