<![CDATA[As one of the regions with a diverse culture, Nusantara has always been the center of meeting between different cultures and has never met one another before. This paper aims to discuss and describe the conditions of society in Batavia during the VOC period to the Dutch East Indies in the 17th to the 19th centuries. The character of the people of each ethnic group in Batavia has very significant differences. This cultural diversity also formed a new culture which would later survive even after Indonesia achieved independence and until the name Batavia changed to Jakarta. In addition to the physicality of the city, the ethnic composition of the people in Batavia was also filled with cycles of the rise and fall of certain ethnic groups which in turn contributed a major influence to the formation of an urban culture.Sebagai salah satu wilayah dengan budaya yang majemuk, Nusantara selalu menjadi pusat pertemuan antara berbagai budaya yang berbeda dan belum pernah saling bertemu satu sama lain sebelumnya. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk membahas dan memaparkan kondisi masyarakat di Batavia selama masa VOC sampai Hindia Belanda pada abad ke-17 sampai abad ke-19. Karakter masyarakat dari masing-masing etnis yang ada di Batavia mempunyai perbedaan yang sangat signifikan. Keberagaman budaya ini pula yang membentuk kebudayaan baru yang nantinya akan terus bertahan bahkan setelah Indonesia mencapai kemerdekaan dan sampai nama Batavia berubah menjadi Jakarta. Di samping fisik kota, komposisi etnis masyarakat di Batavia juga dipenuhi dengan siklus timbul-tenggelamnya kelompok etnis tertentu yang pada akhirnya menyumbangkan pengaruh besar terhadap pembentukan sebuah kebudayaan perkotaan.]]>
