Identitas dan Pembentukan Stereotip Pemain Indonesia Dalam Online Game

Abstract

Perkembangan tekonologi komunikasi telah membawa babak baru dalam kehidupan manusia. Salah satu hasil perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi yang mempunyai pengaruh signifikan dalam interaksi antar manusia adalah game online, dalam hal ini adalah Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMOG). Seperti halnya dalam komunikasi antar budaya yang terjadi dalam konteks bertatap muka, stereotipe sulit untuk dihindari. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan stereotipe-stereotipe yang muncul di antara pemakain game online. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif, dengan metode studi kasus, dan menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi. Informan dalam penelitianini adalah para pemain Battle of Immortals (BoI) yang berasal dari Indonesia. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam dunia online game, saat para pemain tidak bertatap muka sekalipun, cukup banyak stereotipe pemain Indonesia yang muncul dalam proses komunikasi antar pemain - pemain Indonesia yang muncul dalam dunia online game Battle of Immortals (BoI). Development in communication technologies has brought a new chapter into human life. One result of the development of information and communication technologies that have significantly effected interaction between people is online game, in this case is the Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMOG). Like in intercultural communication that occurs in the form of face to face, it is difficult to avoid stereotypes. This study aims to describe stereotypes that arise in the the world of online game. The research applies a qualitative approach with a case study method, and uses in-depth interviews and observation as a data collection technique. Informants in this study are players of Battle of Immortals (BoI) game from Indonesia. In general, the study reveals that in the online game world, although the players do not interact face to face, there are quite a lot of stereotypes of Indonesian players emerging in their process of communication.
