Abstract

Hijab makin dikenal di Indonesia justru ketika maknanya terus berubah seiring konteks penggunaannya. Dampaknya, terjadi peningkatan produksi sekaligus konsumsi, hingga hijab menjadi tren mode. Hijab or veil is gaining more popularity in Indonesia while on the other hand its meaning keeps changing in accordance to its usage. As a consequence, there is a rise in production and demand so that veil becomes a fashion trend. Referring to Jean Baudrillard’s concept, hijab turns into hyper-real, with ever-changing representation of meaning towards hyperreality. Hijab then ‘replaces’ jilbab and at the same time disconnects it from the previous reality that comes with jilbab. This study critically uncovers the construction that exists behind the formation of a hyperreality, especially in hijab fashion trend. Peirce’s Semiotic Analysis is used so this study can provide comprehensive and detailed picture as to how this semiotic process happens in the consumerist society.
