<![CDATA[This study aims to explore the potential characters in folklore which will be developed into a moral literacy of the reading materials. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design of the text analysis type. In findings the researcher found that the moral values of East Javanese folklore describe the real life. Each character tends to have a dual role. This is consistent with the stage of formal operations of the 7th grade students. Someone in life should have tough personality, not easy to believe in the provocation of others, not easily giving up in defense of truth, has the soul of helping each other, has a love for the family, and should cling to herself/himself.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menggali potensi karakter tokoh dalam cerita rakyat yang akan dikembangkan menjadi bahan bacaan literasi moral. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan deskriptif kualitatif jenis analisis teks. Hasil temuan peneliti bahwa nilai-nilai moral dari cerita rakyat Jawa Timur menggambarkan kehidupan yang sebenarnya. Setiap tokoh cenderung memiliki peran ganda. Hal tersebut sesuai dengan tahap operasi formal siswa kelas VII SMP. Seseorang dalam menjalani hidup hendaknya memiliki sikap tangguh, tidak mudah percaya kepada hasutan orang lain, tidak mudah menyerah dalam membela kebenaran, memiliki jiwa tolong-menolong, memiliki cinta kasih terhadap keluarga, dan harus memiliki pendirian yang kuat.]]>
