ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

Mappetuada was the fifth step of wedding proposing tradition in South Sulawesi. The aim of this research was to acknowledge the reader about how the bugis people used their language in Proposing woman in mappetuada tradition. Many religious symbols were used in Bugis local custom in order to perform their identity as a part of religious people. Islam, the most majority religion in Indonesia, is always appeared in each tribes’ activities through appearance or even untterance. This research is a part of Anthropholinguistics research. The theory of Functional analysis is used in finding the voices of speaker in using their languages. The analysis focused on various features of Islamic symbols in people utterances and appearances related to the cultural performance. The additional theory about Bakhtinian dialogism was used in order to find the features which are related and different among the people in mappetuada tradition. The result showed the features of islamic performance used by each performants from different cultural background in mappettuada tradition. The islamic cues were not only found in non- verbal signs but also existed in verbal utterances.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out (1) The description of the validity of speaking assessment tasks used at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar (2). The description of the reliability of speaking assessment tasks used at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar. This research applied quantitative description. The population was the eleventh grade students of Tourism Department at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar in 2011/2012 academic year. The population consisted of 30 students where the sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique. The research data were collected by expert validation, concurrent validity, content validity, face validity, test retest, reliability and inter rater reliability on speaking assessment task and analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 version to see the significant difference between test retest, concurrent validity and inter rater reliability. Then, the data on the expert validation collected by using expert validation and content validity and face validity collected by using native speaker analysis and comment. The results of the research were: (1) The reliability of speaking assessment tasks used at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar is high reliable and (2) the validity of speaking assessment tasks used at SMK Negeri 4 Makassar is valid. The researcher concluded that teaching material especially in speaking tasks is valid and reliable to teach at SMK (vocational school) where the English language teaching process is demanded to teach communicatively and functionally, so the SMK’s students possess English competencies which are relevant to the Job opportunities both in Indonesia and global setting.

Abstract

The objectives of this research is to find out wheter or not the use of story films as the media can improve the students’ narrative writing at third semester in English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research used class action research that consisted two cycles with four steps namely: planning, acting, observing and reflection. Cycle 1 observes the students  competence in writing narrative using film as media. After finding the results of the cycle 1, the researcher continued cycle 2 to improve the result of the students’ in narrative writing. Populations was the third semester English Department Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Muhammadiyah University of Makassar academic year 2015/2016, the sample of this research consisted of 30 students. The result shows that the students’ writing achievement in term of content in descriptive text, pre-test was 55 and post-test was 76.68. the improvement of the students’ writing achievement in term of content is 39.41%. the significant increase of the students’ writing achievement in term of content is proved by t-test is higher than t-table, 8.468> 2.331. It means that the Null Hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (HI) is accepted, where the t-test is greater than t-table. The students’ writing achievement in term of organization in descriptive text, pre-test was (56.18), and post-test was (79). The improvement of the students’ writing achievement in term of organization is 40.61%. The significant increase of the students’ writing achievement in term of organization is proved by t-test is higher than t-table, 9.272> 2.331. It means that the Null Hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (HI) is accepted, where the t-test is greater than t-table.

Abstract

The identification of barriers in the English teaching and learning is essential in providing solutions for students to learn and achieve the expected learning objectives. This article attempts to explore the barriers faced by students of IAIN Manado in learning English as well as offering solutions for lecturers, researchers, and students themselves to overcoming these obstacles. Humans are social beings who cannot live alone without others in interacting and communicating, with their first language English as a second language. By using the English language in good and right uses will make easier for someone to communicate in the classroom with a friend or lecturer who came from another tribe, and spoke in the forum with the impression of a politer. Speak properly not only emphasizes the truth in terms of grammar, but also pay attention to the communicative aspect. The language communicative is not necessarily always the standard language. Instead, use the standard language does not necessarily mean that the use language in good and true uses. Preferably, use of a variety of language that is compatible with the target and in addition follows the rules of correct language.

Abstract

As the application of the four competencies for the lecturers in teaching and learning, it becomes a new business for them to fulfill those competencies (pedagogical professional, personality, social). This has an impact on the provision of a new method for students in learning activities so that a teacher would be able to develop a curriculum in accordance with the respective educational unit and the local needs of each student. The first pedagogical competence deals with the ability of a lecturer in managing the classroom and facilitates the students' diversity. Sometimes lecturers apply different pedagogic actions with students' perceptions so that what is they supposed good by lecturers sometimes inversely with students' intake. The aim of this study was to facilitate the perception of the students in regard to the pedagogical action of a good lecturer. The result supposed to be a consideration from the lecturer in applied pedagogical action in the classroom.

Abstract

Teacher in a classroom sometimes are difficult to get the students' attention in order to comprehend the subject material since the students are coming from many different culture. This study aimed to give some strategies to develop students cultural understanding for remote area students. There are several strategies that proved to be effective to develop students cultural understanding in the classroom, those are use a variety of instructional strategies and learning activities; consider students' cultures and language skills when developing learning objectives ard instructional activities; objectives for affective and personal development; communicate orate expectations; provide rationales; provide frequent reviews of the content learned; facilitate independence in thinking and action; promote student on-task behavior, monitor students' academic progress during lessons and independent work; provide frequent feedback; require mastery. This study is far from comprehensive, as it only investigated the very surface of strategies to develop students cultural understanding in the classroom.

Abstract

This article aims at finding the types of moral and uncovering life messages of five folktales from Asia for children. The folktales are King Vikramaditya (India), Visu the woodsman and Old priest (Japan), Makatho (Myarmar), The Golden Cucumber (Indonesia), and A lazy boy (Korea). Content analysis technique is used in analyzing data which coding sheet as instrument is used in coding process. Finding types and messages of the folktales based on Neiman's theory. This article finds there are thirty-one data of moral aspects which classify into four types of moral: religious morality, individual morality, natural morality and social morality. Each folktale in each country has different story and different moral message. The recommendation of this research is due to parent and teacher for being more selective in choosing folktale for children or student.

Abstract

This thesis studied about culture based on the script of the movie John Carter of Mars which was released in 2012. This research aimed to describe and analyze the kinds and comparison on Earth and Mars culture in the movie. This research focused on sociological approach and culture based on Edward B. Tylor and Hofstede's theories toward kinds of culture elements. This research used descriptive qualitative method and used note taking as the instrument. The findings showed that there were twenty-two kinds of data reffered to culture elements which were divided into seven categories; knowledge religion, art, morals, laws, customs, and language. Thus, there were twenty-two which were divided into ten data on Earth and twelve data on Mars. Therefore, the researcher concluded that seven culture elements were the shaper element toward the societies activity on Earth and Mars based on John Carter of Mars movie that became the distinguishing appropriate with their respective ways.

Abstract

The purpose of this research aimed to investigate the influence of Teachers' Self-efficacy on their teaching performance in the classroom setting. The role of teachers' years of teaching experience in their self-efficacy was also investigated. The method applied waa a qualitative descriptive research with interview as the instrument. The participants of this research were two Indonesian EFL teachers. The years of teaching experience were 2 years for novice teacher and 21 years for experienced teacher. The result of this research showed that experienced teacher has higher sense of self-efficacy than novice teacher. It also showed that years of teaching experience influence to teachers' self-efficacy.

Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal the feminism idea in Rich's selected poems, a woman author in the mid of 20th century and in Second World War. The feminist theory is the main theory used in analysing the data. Biographical and social approach is used in conducting this study. Those approaches are very helpful in helping to understand the ideas of feminism in Rich's selected poems. Descriptive qualitative and bibliographical are the methods that applied in this study. The result shows that the women in Rich poems did try their best to fight for their rights to oppose the culture and patriarchal society in their time. This can be seen from the analysing of the ideas of the behaviour of women in the poems.
