Abstract

Fishing using gill net has been done widely by fishermen in Southeast Maluku Regency, including in Ohoi Tuburngil waters north east Kei Besar District. Fishing activities using this type of fishing gear are still ongoing as a source of income for local community. The objective of this research were to (1) analyze the composition of the catch with a surface gill net based on the catching time and (2) compare yields and determine the best fishing time in the fishing process with surface gill net. The research methods were experimental fishing, observation and interview. The results showed that the total number of fish species caught with surface gill net during the research was 128 fish consisting of 7 fish species. The value of the diversity index (H') obtained for fishing in the morning was 1,60, at daytime was 1,15, afternoon was 1,30, and at evening was 0,92. According to the criteria for the diversity index, the value of H' less than 1 is categorized as low diversity. The results of the analysis of variance showed that te fishing time has a very significant effect on the catch number at the level of ά = 0.05. Based on the results obtained, it showed that the evening catch was significantly different from that in the morning, the daytime and the afternoon, while catch in the afternoon was significantly different from the day time and different from the morning time.

Abstract

Mud crab fishing has been carried out intensively using various types of technology, so this study was conducted to analyze the catch composition, size distribution and growth pattern of mud crab using bubu and gill nets. The research was carried out from March to May 2018 in the waters of the Babo district, Teluk Bintuni Regency with a survey model for the purpose of analyzing the effectiveness of bubu and gill nets. The results showed that the catch of mud crabs amounted to 377 individu consisting of 180 individu (54,41%) caught with bubu and 157 individu (46,59%) with gill nets. The size distribution of the carapace width of mud crabs caught with bubu from 65 to 197 mm (132,34 ± 3,85 mm) and gill nets ranged from 126 to 200 mm (165,54 ± 18,53 mm). The distribution of weights caught by bubu and gill nets were 286,34-989,42 g (684,42 ± 207,78 g) and 595,35-992,25 g (865,63 ± 86,06 g) respectively. The growth patterns of mud crabs caught using bubu and gill nets were both negative allometric (b < 3). The composition of the catch was dominated by bubu fishing gear with a wider size distribution and relatively the same growth pattern.

Abstract

Ambon Bay consists of the inner Ambon Bay (IAB) and the outer Ambon Bay (OAB) and they are separated by the shallow sill (12 m) Galala-Rumah Tiga. The topography of the bay makes it unique and causes the exchange of water mass between those two parts of the bay does not follow the daily tidal cycle. The aim of this study was to analyze the vertical and horizontal temperature and chlorophyll-a distribution in order to know the water circulation in Ambon Bay. This study was carried out during the monsoon, in November 2018. The CTD was used to measure in situ temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration. The data were analyzed by using Surfer and ODV programs. The results show that the temperature of the surface water (0-5 m) of Ambon Bay was 29.2℃. In depth 15-40 m, temperature was different between the IAB (27.7-28.2℃) and OAB (29,2-28.7℃). Chlorophyll-a concentration was found higher in the IAB than in OAB in all depths. In the depth >12 m, chlorophyll-a in the IAB was 1 mg/m3 compared to its concentration in OAB only 0.3 mg/m3. As a conclusion, the sill in Ambon bay causes unique circulation of water mass between IAB and OAB based on the analysis of temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration distribution.

Abstract

The high consumption of tilapia in the community can cause a large amount of tilapia scale waste to be produced. The fish scale waste can still be utilized by further processing into gelatin. Gelatin is acquired through partial hydrolysis of collagen protein found in fish scales. This study aims to find out the difference effect of citric acid concentration and demineralization time on the amount of tilapia scale gelatin. The methods used to obtain gelatin are degreasing, demineralization, extraction, drying, and milling. Gelatin quality testing includes yield, water, ash, pH, and functional groups. The identification of gelatin functional groups was carried out using the PerkinElmer Spectrum IR ES Version 10.6.2. instrument. The variation in the concentration of citric acid added was 1,5 – 6% and the demineralization time was 12 – 72 hours. Outcomes of the most gelatin was produced at a concentration of 6% citric acid and a demineralization time of 72 hours. The resulting yield is 3.84%, water is 8.58%, as is 1.44%, pH is 4.5, and has O-H, N-H, O-H bending, and C=O functional groups which has similarities with commercial gelatin. Itcan conclude that the best gelatin is produced with a concentration of 6% citric acid with a demineralization time of 72 hours.

Abstract

The spotted scat, Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus, 1766) is a component of the estuarine ecosystem with little reproductive information. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of describing aspects of the reproductive biology of this fish species through sex ratio, size at first sexual maturity, and spawning season. The collection of fish samples from the waters of Pabean Bay was carried out every month between January and December 2015. The fishing gear used were sero and gill nets. A total of 428 individuals were collected consisting of larval, juvenile, pre-adult, and adult stages. The ratio of the number of male and female individuals is relatively balanced (1.00 : 1.05). The size of the male individual's first sexual maturity at a total length of 102.95 mm and 112.44 mm in female individuals. The composition of gonadal maturity level and gonadal maturity index value indicated that there was reproductive activity that lasted throughout the year and increased in January-February and September-November. Information on reproductive aspects obtained in this study can be used as a basis for the management of this fish resource, including through recommendations for closing locations and fishing times.

Abstract

Corals are unique and specific ecosystems found in tropical waters, and are vulnerable to changes in the aquatic environment. This study aims to determine the percentage of coral reef cover and coral reef mortality index in Pomalaa waters. Coral observations were carried out at a depth of 3 m to represent shallow waters and 7 m to represent deep waters, each of which consisted of 4 observation points. The water quality parameters that were measured directly in the field were temperature, salinity, pH, water brightness and current speed using a Water Quality Checker (TOAA) and for nitrate and phosphate analysis carried out in the laboratory. The results showed that the water quality at each research station did not differ that much. The condition of coral reefs in Pomalaa waters at a depth of 3 m is categorized as damaged, with the percentage of live coral cover ranging from 11.85% - 22.07%. At a depth of 7 m the average is in moderate to damaged condition, with the percentage of cover in the range of 16.13% - 28.81%. This shows that coral diversity is generally low, so that no coral species dominates. The mortality rate of coral reefs in Pomalaa waters is high at a depth of 3 meters, namely 0.75, meaning that 75% of coral reefs are in bad condition to death, as well as at a depth of 7 meters, the highest mortality index is 0.63 meaning 63% of coral reefs in a depth of 7 meters experienced bad conditions to death.
