Abstract

The English debat organization is one of the most popular students’ activity units at STKIP PGRI Ponorogo. Many students of English department join this club. The skill of debate of the students in the English club is not improved yet. The objective of this study was to give an appropriate way of giving argument of a debate by using AREL. AREL is Argument, Reasoning, Evidance and Link Back. This is a classroom action research. The approach of this study is qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained by using questionnaire and observation. The quantitative data were gained from the result of the students’ speaking test both pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II. The subject of the study was the members of the English debate club of STKIP PGRI Ponorogo consisting of 19 students. The data collection technique used in this study was observation. The observation, then, also was enriched by recording and taking-note techniques. Data, then, was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. In pre-test, many students still made many mistakes in presenting the argument. Based on the pre-test data, the pre-treatment was done. In post-test I, some students made an improvement in presenting a good enough organization of an argument, but it was not good yet. In post-test II of the next treatment, it shows a better result

Abstract

This study investigated the students’ ability, the problems and their reasons why they faced problems on English speaking. The triangulation of mixed methods was used in this study. The quantitative data gathered from the speaking test result by involving 130 students of Islamic Boarding School Program and the qualitative data gathered from the questionnaire and interview results from the selected students who meet the criteria. The findings showed that the students’ ability was categorized low (62.93); the students have problems on grammar (42.20%), pronunciation (36.60%), vocabulary (35.20%), fluency (36%) and comprehension (34.40%); the students’ reason in facing the problems on English speaking English were not only having limited knowledge on the components of speaking skills including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension but also they have own personal reasons, such as shy to perform speaking, lack of self confidence, lack of speaking practice, limited time given for preparation on English speaking test, the difficulties at using and understanding the speaking material found in the English textbook, the environment (dormitory) did not support them to acquire and use English as a medium daily interaction and they preferred to study the Islamic knowledge and Arabic than English. This study indicated that the students’ ability should be increased by giving motivation and taught them with the suitable and interested English speaking materials.

Abstract

This study was aimed to know the students’ ability in managing classroom in the internship program of teaching. As future teacher, the students are directed to master on the skills of teaching. One of the skills is pedagogical skill to manage the classroom. This study used a descriptive design. The data was collected by using observation. The population of the study was the internship program students of semester VI of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah study program. The sampling used random sampling with 11 students sample. The result of finding shows that the highest score was 75 and the lowest score was 50. The students who were in the category of “Very Good” or in the range of 71-85, was 18.2% (2 of 11 students), in the category of “Good” or in the range of 56-85 was 36.4% (4 of 11 students), in the category of “Good Enough” or in the range of 41-55 was 45.4% (5 of 1 students), and no students were in the category of “Poor” or in the range of 26-40.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to implement the improvisations technique to improve the student’s speaking ability. In conducting the research, there were two components expected to be improved, they were improving the students’ speaking score and increasing the quality of classroom atmosphere of teaching speaking. This study employed the collaborative classroom action research and it was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. There were five meetings in each cycle; four meetings for the implementation of improvisations in the teaching of speaking and one meeting for conducting speaking test. The instruments used to collect the data were: (1) observation checklist, (2) field-note, (3) a score sheet, and (4) a questionnaire. The result of the research showed that the criteria of success had been reached. There were two aspects determined as the success criteria of the implementation of improvisations in the teaching of speaking; score improvement and classroom atmosphere. The result of speaking test presented that the students had made some progress, the average scores raised from 2.72 in the pre-test, 3.09 in cycle 1 and 3.76 in cycle 2. These scores indicated an increasing ability from being ‘fair’ to being ‘good’. The classroom atmosphere were also increasing positively; the students were actively involved in the teaching and learning process, indicated by 64% participated in cycle 1 and 73.79% participated in cycle 2. The students were also highly motivated in joining the teaching learning process. They cooperated, asked, responded, and expressed spontaneously.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to improve the students’ ability in counting as one of the mathematics lesson of the second grade students of SDN 003 Rantau Pulung through marbles and gravels. This is a classroom action research which has a goal to improve the quality of education. The instruments used in this study were a mathematics test and classroom observation. The criteria of success were (1) the students’ average score, 70, and (2) the students participation, 75%. The result of the study shows that in cycle 1, the criteria of success did not achieve yet. In cycle 2, it shows that the criteria of success has been fulfilled. It shows that 75% of the students were active in the teaching and learning process and the students’ average score can be improve from 58.50 in cycle 1 became 73.00 in cycle 2.

Abstract

Al-Qur’an, as a guidance of life is not doubtful at all, truly able to give a right direction for all human problems in this world, including how to educate the children. One of the directions and guidances about how to educate the children given by Al-Qur’an is Surat Luqman (31) verse 12-19. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher concludes that the content of ahlaq education for children stated in Surat Luqman (31) verse 12-19 are: (1) thankful to Allah, to parents, and to be a strong moslem; (2) devoting to the parents; (3) ordering to do the right things and avoiding the bad things; (4) be patient; and (5) do not arrogant. Those ahlaq content are still relevant to this contemporary children education.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to know the speaking ability of the Grade Eight-A Students of SMP Negeri 1 Anggana in Academic Year 2012/2013 after using Pictures, and to know the student’s participation of the grade Eight-A students of SMP Negeri 1 Anggana in Academic Year 2012/ 2013 through pictures. This study employed CAR (Classroom Action Research) design. The procedures of CAR, i,e. Planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The result showed that the use of pictures had succeeded, to some extent, to improve student’s speaking ability and students’ participation. The student’s speaking ability improve as it showed that the number of students which were classified as good and very good improved from 6, 4% in preliminary study to 83, 9% in cycle I and became 100% in cycle 2. While those who classified as fair and poor reduced from 93, 6% in preliminary study to 16, 1% in cycle 1 and became 0% in cycle 2. As a result, the using of pictures could enhance the students speaking ability. Mostly, the students could improved their fluency, content, pronunciation and grammar. The average score raised from 66 in preliminary study, 74 in cycle 1, and 80 in cycle 2. The students’ participation also improved from cycle to cycle. In cycle 1, during the teaching learning process, the class VIII-A had an improvement. It stated that from meeting 1 to 3, the students were actively involved. The result had changed in meeting 3 where 13 students were categorized as very active and 12 students were active enough in presenting the pictures and made progress every meeting. The rest 4 students were categorized as hesitant and 2 students were not active since they were still shy to explore their ideas. On the other hand, during 3 meetings started from meeting 4 to 6 in cycle 2, the class VIII-A also had more improvement than what they did in cycle 1. There were 22 students categorized as very active and 8 students were active enough. The result of the research showed that the implementation of using picture media could give an improvement on students speaking ability and students’ participation.

Abstract

The problem highlighted in this research is the low reading comprehension of the second semester students of English Department in State College of Islamic Studies Tulungagung that is caused by (a) the uninteresting activities in reading class; (b) the students difficulties in understanding and retelling the ideas of the text; (c) the students low motivation in reading habit. The theoretical review includes the nature of reading, picture series, inspiring reading, and the nature of motivation. The procedure of the research consists of identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting the result of the research. In this research, the researcher acts as the lecturer who conducts the action research in the classroom and she is helped by her collegues. In collecting the data, the researcher uses observational technique supported with tests. In analysing the data, it was used t-test non independent, the researcher uses the observation, questionaire, interview, students ‘work supported with the video recording and photograph,then also compares the result of the students pre-test and post-test to answer the research questions. There is significant improvement in the result of pre-test and post-test of cycle 1 and 2. In cycle 1, t0 (6.89766) is higher than tt (1.73) and in cycle 2, t0 (10.8622) is also higher than tt (1.73). From these two results, therefore, h0 is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (ha) is accepted. By retelling the ideas and summarizing the text using interesting media especially picture series can increase the students motivation in reading class especially to improve their reading comprehension.

Abstract

The education institutions become a central place to create a young better generation than the privous ones through character education. The character education is a process of creating the students become an intactly good-characterized human in the dimension of mind, way of thinking, physically healthy, and hearted human. The character education is carving the students’ ahlaq through a process of knowing the good, loving the good, and acting the good. That process involves the coqnitive, emotional, and physical aspects, so the noble ahlaq can be carved become the habit of the mind, heart, and hands. The character education is directed to create a tough, competitive, noble hearted, moraly, tolerant, helpful, patriotic, and dinamic person who has the orientation of science and knowledge based on the belief and piety of Allah SWT. A teacher implements the character education in the teaching and learning process by making the students formulate the questions actively, find the sources of learning, collect the information, work with the information, reconstruct the fact, and present the result of reconstruction. The character education learning should be done by the teachers from the planning, implementaion, and evaluation.
