Abstract

Personal learning environment (PLE) connects the formal and informal learning of the learners by utilizing both digital and non-digital tools. This concept is believed to be able to support the process of learning Scientific Writing because to construct an article is not enough relying on formal learning and a single tool provider. This paper reports the implementation as well as the tools used and impact of getting engaged in PLE for learning Scientific Writing. The research was conducted qualitatively in narrative inquiry analysis while the data was collected through observation, questionnaire and in-depth interview. The participant was a graduate student majoring English Education department having experienced making a scientific journal. The learner admitted that collaborating both digital and non-digital tools is very meaningful, however the use of digital tools apparently more efficient as supported by Reinders (2014) to support different aspects of the learning process. This study is beneficial for ELT classroom, specifically for academic writing class where Scientific Writing is one of mandatory subject being taught by the lecturer. The tools revealed in the finding can be references for EFL learners to be applied in constructing Scientific Writing.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the linguistic items which act as hedges in political news interviews in relation to politicians’ gender, as well as to examine the pragmatic functions of these devices. Two transcripts of political news interviews of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumph, randomly selected from CNN official website (see Appendix), were analyzed adopting Salager-Meyer’s (1997) taxonomy. The study revealed that the frequent used of hedging devices in the two interviews are modal auxiliaries, if clause, and introductory phrase. The most frequently used hedging device subcategory are the modal auxiliary “can”, “will”, “would”, and “should”. Whilst the used introductory phrase are “l think”, “l believe”, “l guess”, “as l said”, and “my understanding is that..”. The findings suggest that these hedging devices fulfill several pragmatic functions. Hedging devices is used by the two politicians to express indirectness, politeness, lack of commitment and probability. In relation to gender, the findings also reveal that the spread of hedging of the two politicians are similar

Abstract

This study has three aims: the first is to illuminate the transformation in the minds of the Japanese people after the catastrophic earthquake in 2011—namely, the collective movement to reappraise the worth of bonds and connections between/among people. The second is to show that the ongoing spiritual change has a number of similarities with the worldview of the Melanesian folk which Marilyn Strathern analysed with the concept of “dividual”. The third is to generalize diverse insights which the two cases suggest and thus to seek a fresh way to see people and those relations which bridge over them. The argument begins with a discussion to prove the point of the first aim, then the second, and, after referring to what is not dealt with for future research, concludes by demonstrating that of the third. The contribution which this study will make for interdisciplinary scholarship is that it attests a literary text and an anthropological study can be employed to derive a philosophical discourse.

Abstract

The present study was undertaken based on an assumption that there is no full guarantee that the university-level students from English department could be easily successful in writing activities. This might be as a result of differences in individuals’ characteristics contributing to language learning process, and even better it has something to do with the so-called “Intelligence”. While some relevant studies concerned about the relationship between the students’ Multiple Intelligence profile and their ability in language learning, the current findings contradicted the findings that of researches. In relation with writing skill, some show a significant correlation, some found only partial correlation, and some illustrated insignificant correlation between the observed variables. To have a clearer picture as to this arguable issue, the present study’s aim was about to look into the relationship between multiple intelligences as a whole part and linguistic intelligence as a part of multiple intelligences, and writing performance of English department students in a state university. This study employed mix method and the instruments applied were MI Inventory, a writing scale adopted from IELTS writing task 2, and interview. A small number of students, 27 students, actively participated in this study, and the findings indicated that insignificant correlation existed between students’ writing performance and their MI profile as a whole part or as independent intelligence, namely linguistic intelligence.

Abstract

Semantics is one of the key elements in the study of language. This article’s main objective is to describe and evaluate how semantic theories are implemented in the field of Natural Language Processing as well as Language Teaching. There are two branches of semantic theories that this article focuses on: Formal Semantics and Natural Semantic Metalanguage. The strengths and weaknesses of the theories mentioned are discussed. The most versatile theory is suggested along with future improvements.

Abstract

This research focuses in developing global education based ELT materials for transactional speaking skills by using needs analysis. It is aimed to enhance the quality of teaching English at the tertiary level by adapting the students’ needs, the expectations of the lecturers and inputs from graduates to give beneficial contribution towards the students’ future career. This is a development research method by applying IDO’s model, which implements three systematic phases (Input, Development, and Output). The first phase is input phase. It is set up by needs analysis which is carried out by requiring 130 respondents (110 students, 8 lecturers and 12 graduates). Students and graduates are selected randomly while the lecturers are selected by using purposive sampling technique. The data are collected through needs analysis questionnaire and analyzed by using descriptive approach. The second phase, development, attempts to formulate the aim and the objectives based on the information of needs analysis which is used for selecting course contents. In the last phase is output phase. It is administered by compiling the lesson plan and producing the prototype of the global education based ELT materials for speaking skill, specifically transactional speaking skills. The findings of this research have confirmed the importance of using needs analysis as the basis of obtaining information about students’ linguistic and learning needs as well as for developing well-design ELT materials. This contributes to the prototype of an adaptive developed ELT materials comprising one sample of lesson plan and one unit of global education based instructional materials for transactional speaking skills development.

Abstract

Speaking fluently is characterized not only by the speed of oral delivery but also by the absence of non-fluent pauses. This paper aims at investigating the pausing phenomena in the speech of the Yemeni learners of English. It investigated three aspects of silent pauses, the frequency, the placement and the length.  The data were collected from 20 level four students enrolled in the Department English Language, Faculty of Education, Taiz University. The participants were recorded narrating the events of a short silent video immediately after watching it. Data were analyzed quantitatively utilizing the waveform spectrogram software called PRAAT. The findings showed that the Yemeni EFL learners overused non-fluent silent pauses. Additionally, they paused in the middle of the clauses rather than at the clause boundaries. With respect to the mean length of silent pauses, the speech of the EFL learners at Taiz University was full of long silent pauses which took one-third of the total speaking time. Therefore, it is highly suggested that the teachers of English should draw the learners’ attention to the notion of pausing and its effect on speaking fluency in order to lessen or avoid it. Teachers should also vary their activities to help the learners speak fluently without much pausing.

Abstract

This article attempts to analyze the discourse of women subjected to marital violence. In this regard, we will analyze how these women legitimize their discourse through evaluation as a narrative component and as a strategy that aims to establish a mode of argumentation that victimizes them and demonizes the violent husbands. The site from which the data is extracted is a TV talk show “Qesset Nnass” (The story of people) on the Moroccan TV channel Medi 1 TV. Specifically, we will be concerned with the ways women articulate propositions through moral legitimation to send messages that can only be decoded by reference to the cultural variable of language. The stories scrutinized are significant in that they foreground the extreme suffering women are subject to within a patriarchal society that leaves no room for acceptable alternatives at the economic, legal, and social levels.

Abstract

This study is to explore the use of hedging device in undergraduate studens thesis, focussed on literature review section. The objective of this study are: 1). To find out the typical features of formal class of hedging device employed by undergraduate students in literature review sections of their thesis, 2). To find out the typical features of informal/less-formal class of hedging device employed by undergraduate students in literature review sections of their thesis. The significance of the research is intended to help both teachers and students in developing the skills of academic writing discourse. Especially for the students and researchers, it expected by this research it would improve their awareness to employ approppriate words or vocabularies in asserting the claims of their future research findings. Due to the qualitative design of this study the instrument applied was document, while the sample theses were taken purposively. The gathered data of 10 literature review sections of undergraduate thesis written on 2015 by the students of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar analyzed and classified using Hinkels’ Classification of Hedges. The research findings revealed that Indefinite modal verbs ‘should’, ‘may’, and ‘able’ as the typical features of formal class of hedging device, meanwhile the definite modal verbs ‘can’, ‘will’ and ‘must’ were the typical feature of informal/less-formal class hedging device.

Abstract

This paper explores cultural shock experiences encountered by African students studying in Indonesian Universities. The study used qualitative approach to collect data through in-depth face-to-face interviews with African students and participant observation. The findings of the study reveal that many African students had experienced unfamiliar situation that are different from those of their home countries in the course of study in Indonesia. Such situation leads to what is called “culture shock”, which includes new academic life, culture fatigue, language barrier and food outlets. The study has shown that most of the stress had a profound impact on shaping their acculturation and living in Indonesia. The study adds knowledge to literature, particularly on generating ideas for better management of culture shock in an alien environment. Accordingly, the study recommends that before embarking to abroad for education, it is very important to understand the mechanism and consequences of study abroad and shape our knowledge of how these experience function worldwide and students should develop positive attitudes in order to ease their adjustment to an alien culture and setting.
