Abstract

This paper wants to reveal the contestation of power in Islamic mass organizations. The contestation for power that usually runs hot turns out to be cold and shady in the Muhammadiyah organization. This progressive Islamic movement uses the e-voting system in its election process. This process started with the selection of 216 leadership candidates, then narrowed down to 126 prospective candidates, 92 prospective candidates, up to 39 candidates and ended with 13 leadership. The tiered selection process from the tanwir meeting until the 13 leaders were elected was carried out through e-voting. There are several advantages of this e-voting system, it is more practical and more time and energy efficient. The e-voting process is also a process of deepening and maturing democracy in the future. Where there are no prominent factions, there are no SARA issues and there is no money politics. Furthermore, if we reflect according to Islamic political ethics, the correct practice of the Muhammadiyah Conference is. How can the values of al is, al musawah, al amanah, al musulliyah and al hurriyah be applied to all the organizing committee, participants and cheerleaders of the Muktamar Muhammadiyah, to become an added value for this Islamic mass organization. The research method we used to compile this research is a qualitative method with a case study type. The practical recommendations that we provide include that the neatly arranged system in Muhammadiyah Ormas can be implemented by other mass organizations or groups. As for theoretical recommendations, namely the need to make a standard approach related to the ideal concept of e-voting,

Abstract

Gender relations and Islam occupy a distinctive space in the succession of village heads. This research will highlight gender relations with Islam and the involvement of female nationalists and Islamists in village head elections. This field research uses a qualitative research method of narrative data analysis. Data were obtained from unstructured interviews, documents, focus group discussions (FGD), and literature. This research found that there is a relationship between gender and Islam in the village head elections in Kudus Regency in 2022. This relationship can be seen from the involvement of Islamist and nationalist women in village head elections, as voters, candidates, to the success team. The conflict between adat and Islam which does not allow women to be involved in leadership succession, and even involved in the wider public sphere, is not a barrier. Kudus Regency women continue to respect Islam in the formal dimension, while gender equality between men and women is considered a form of justice.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the regional head and legislative elections in West Lampung where elites running as candidates are more likely to choose their partners based on ethnic representation to promote ethnic solidarity in the region. This article aims to explain the Islamic view of understanding the construction of identity politics in West Lampung. In this case, it uses explanatory qualitative which deals with the issue of regional sons becoming the main commodity in ethnic politics. The findings of this article show that Muklis Basri has established friendship and commitment to the traditional and customary leaders of Sai Batin in West Lampung. The form of his attention is that many traditional activities, and traditional Sai Batin ceremonies are made a permanent regional and tourism agenda in West Lampung Regency. Likewise, the proximity to the persuasive approach of the community, Mukhlis can attract community sympathy by paying great attention to local customs and the public interest. The existence of customary balancers has the authority to make decisions about the results of deliberations in this case mobilization to influence voters. From an Islamic perspective, the prevailing construction of blind fanaticism towards a particular group or tribe, known as ashobiyah, is considered contrary to the principles of equality and fraternity emphasized by this religion as well as the importance of viewing individuals based on their qualities, character and deeds, not their origin based on Q.S Al Hujurat:13.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Indonesia's diplomacy as a majority Muslim democratic country in responding to human rights violations in Myanmar. The conflict in Myanmar, particularly concerning the treatment of the Muslim Rohingya minority, has raised international concerns. As a country with the largest Muslim population in the world and a strong democratic tradition, Indonesia plays a crucial role in responding to this situation. The research methodology employed in this study is the analysis of Indonesia's foreign policy towards Myanmar and human rights violations in that country. Data were obtained through document studies, including official government statements, political speeches, and relevant news sources. The research findings indicate that Indonesia has taken several steps in responding to human rights violations in Myanmar. The Indonesian government consistently condemns the acts of violence and human rights abuses occurring in Myanmar, including the treatment of the Rohingya. Indonesia has also utilized international forums, such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to advocate for human rights in Myanmar. However, this research also reveals some challenges faced by Indonesia in conducting diplomacy related to Myanmar. The limited influence of Indonesia over the Myanmar government and disagreements among ASEAN member states pose constraints on Indonesia's efforts to respond to human rights violations in its neighboring country. In conclusion, Indonesia's diplomacy as a majority Muslim democratic country in responding to human rights violations in Myanmar has resulted in several constructive steps. However, the challenges encountered indicate that Indonesia's efforts still need improvement.

Abstract

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) plays a crucial role in safeguarding and upholding the rights of refugees worldwide. In November 2021, extensive demonstrations by Afghan refugees occurred across Indonesia, including in Pekanbaru city, Riau Province. These protests persisted on a weekly basis until November 2022. Indonesia served as a transit country for Afghan refugees enroute to their final destination, primarily Australia. The choice of Indonesia as a transit point was driven by its geographical proximity and perceived cultural similarities, particularly in terms of being predominantly Islamic nations. These similarities were expected to foster solidarity and aid in the evacuation process. However, despite these perceived similarities, they found themselves still trapped in Indonesia for an extended period, compelling them to implore UNHCR to expedite the resettlement process. It is noteworthy that Indonesia has not ratified the 1951 Convention, thereby relieving the country of technical responsibility towards international refugees. Nonetheless, given the inevitable nature of the situation, Indonesia and UNHCR must collaborate to effectively address and manage the challenges at hand.
