Abstract

This research discusses the multimodal analysis in the advertisement of Lemonilo Healthy Instant Noodles. Advertising is a promotional medium that has the aim of promoting or introducing a product to a wide audience. Advertisements in print and electronic media are also texts that have a complex meaning. The complexity of meaning occurs because in conveying messages in advertisements not only use language elements but also nonverbal language elements and other visual means. Therefore, to understand the complexity of meaning it is necessary to do multimodal analysis in the advertisement. The multimodal analysis discussed in this paper uses functional systemic linguistic theory (LSF). The multimodal analysis model was developed from a combination of multimodal theory by Anstey & Bull (2010), and multimodal analysis by Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996-2006). From the analysis of the Lemonilo Healthy Instant Noodle advertisement, the results show that the Lemonilo Instant Noodle advertisement has a multimodal semiotic system which includes linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spatial elements. Therefore, to further learn about how important literature in early stages of human life is, an approach towards children’s literature is needed. This study aims to analyze a work of children’s literature with a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. Ideational, Textual, and Interpersonal meanings are analyzed from the short story “Jack and the Beanstalk” accessed from https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/short-stories/jack-and-the-beanstalk. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative method. The story is broken down into individual clauses which are then analyzed using SFL in tables as shown below. The result shows that the majority of the text used material process and topical unmarked theme, which indicates that the story is simple but concise. The story itself, although simple, tells a magical fantasy tale, which stimulates children’s imagination to the fullest.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the realization of textual metafunctions and the types of themes that are dominated in speeches about mental health on the TEDxSalem YouTube channel entitled 'Why you should take a break: Prioritizing mental health in schools and brought by Hailey Hardcastle. The method in this research is qualitative with a content analysis approach. The data was obtained from the speech text and the data were analyzed using Halliday's Theory by considering the data analysis steps proposed by Gay et al. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the realization of the textual metafunction in Hailey Hardcastle's speech was applied. Found 105 clauses in the speech. And in those 105 clauses, there are themes and rhymes that mediate messages to their listeners. So it can be concluded that based on the textual metafunction perspective, the speaker tries to attract the listener's attention to focus more on the message of what is being said, and gives a lot of statements to tell the listener his confession that mental health should be considered the same as physical health and preferably starting at an early age.
