Abstract

This paper examines theological sources of Islam on the status of women in Politics. Al Quran states that equality between men and women are guaranteed in politics such as in Quran: Ali Imran, 195; an Nahl, 97; at Taubah, 71. Islamic politics based on the following postulates: first, freedom (al Hurriyyah). Human beings are only serving God. Second, equality (Musawah, non-discriminatory). All human being are equal in front of Allah. Third, respect to other human beings (Karamah al Insan/ preserving the other human’s dignity). Fourth, justice (‘Adalah). Theological sources of Islam has given foundation for the contemporary status of women in politics which had long been stripped away due to misogynistic interpretation of Quran. Abstract

Indonesian Muslim women had long been an inseparable part from political activities since the colonial period to present era. During colonial era, although they did not work formally under certain Islamic women’s organizations, they made real contributions to the women’s political movement in Indonesia since they formed women’s branches of existing mass organizations. Fatayat, this organization is the sister branch of the largest Islamic organizations in Indonesia: Nahdlatul Ulama. This paper narrates that the involvement of Fatayat in politics had its historical and genealogical roots since Soekarno era. Sukarno facilitated Fatayat to develop power capacity in politics. However, during Soeharto era Fatayat experienced a setback due to New Order’s control toward women’s organization with its “ibuism” ideology. In order to maintain its existence, Fatayat decided to collaborate with government by incorporating state’s program such as PKK, Posyandu into their activities while alos made network with national and international funding organization.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of Indonesian Christian women in the public sphere, especially in the realm of politics. This article aims to reconstruct the role of Israelite women who lived in pre-monarchic Israel using sociological, social science, anthropological, and archeological methods. The result of my analysis shows that the demands of war that occurred continuously in the territory of ancient Israel and the opening of new land in the mountainous regions of Israel required the active participation of women to not only be involved in the reproduction but also the production–an activity that belonged to male members of the family. This phenomenon creates a balance in the division of labor between men and women which of course increased the status of women in society. The result of this reconstruction that underlines the active role of women in the public sphere in the world of ancient Israel becomes an important model for Christian women in Indonesia today to take an active role in the public sphere, especially in politics.

Abstract

Feminist politics is a perpetual investment in a just civilization. It awares of the injustice structure that is inherently located within the sociological body of patriarchal system. It needs more than voluntary-echo in democracy rather a strong conceptual tools that will enlighten the dialectic transport of communication in democratic system. Any feminists shall be alert to watch and guard, as well as, cynically, radically, monitor the run of the new-elected president—whether he will bring mandate of equality or not. Short-term strategy has been invested to block the new-order regime to take control; and long-term strategy shall be invested to guarantee the system of equality in the new cabinet.

Abstract

Female representation in parliament is decreasing in 2014, from 18 to 17 percent. This is not good news at all. It deteriorates further with no focus on women’s status in each of presidential candidates. Status of women, sexual minorities, and other vulnerable groups were not becoming focus of issues in debates. Women’s movement in near future and in the long run shall fight hard to tackle previous problems. This 2014 General Election has been a powerful tool as well for women to participate and to voice their concern regarding issues of equality and justice. This study unearths how women usher peaceful campaign during the parliament and presidential elections—showing their political engagement to Indonesia as democratic state.

Abstract

This paper investigates stereotype of first ladies and image being built during 2014 Indonesia presidential election. Wives of candidates in the election are highly accomplished as well as being graduated from universities, yet these facts are not exposed adequately in the media as part of public education on equality. Most of the time, they are being posited as faithful-partner and bold-supporter of their husbands/ partners. Interviews held by the media frequently narrate the drama within the house, family, and their romance. Their career and professionalism are being hidden from the public. Platform of empowerment and gender equality are highly cultivated, promoted, and campained by political-parties as well as NGOs, yet missed the wives to be involved. The capacity of the presidential candidate’s wives on gender, equality and women’s empowerment platforms designed by the political parties need to be promoted and scrutinized.
