Abstract

Not all social justice teachings are social justice according to the teaching of the Bible. The case in point is the teaching of critical theory on racism (Critical Race Theory or CRT). This teaching that nowadays has a strong influence over universities in the United States promotes widely concepts such as systemic racism, social binary, and intersectionality, which has actually caused a social rift marked by never-ending racial prejudice. From the biblical point of view, the critical theory view of racism contains social consequences that harm society at large. It has taught a social mindset that runs counter to the biblical teachings on social justice. After discussing the historical background of CRT and the basic tenets of CRT, I will then provide an evaluation of CRT from the biblical perspective by observing its starting point, its view of the root cause of racism, and the primary solution that it offers.

Abstract

The word “person” is generally used to refer to the existence of both humans and God. For humans, being a person means being able to think logically, have self-awareness, make free choices, and therefore be recognized morally and legally. The Christian faith believes in God as a Divine Person. The Dogma of the Trinity teaches faith in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Three Persons of one nature. Christological dogma teaches that Jesus is a Person who has both divine and human natures. However, what is a person? Specifically, what is the Divine Person? The answer to those questions is found not in the Bible but in the philosophical and theological tracts. This article presents Richard of Saint Victor’s argument on the Divine Person. In his De Trinitate, he sees that the definition of the Divine Person can explain the mystery of the Trinity. Richard borrows this existing understanding, especially from that of Boethius. However, he also offers novelty, which is still relevant today, namely the Trinitarian God as a Divine Person with summa caritas, perfect co-love that is unselfish, non-exclusive, and embraces diversity.

Abstract

This study focuses on the relationship between the doctrines of the Incarnation and the Ascension of Jesus Christ, which often does not receive adequate attention in contemporary theology. The problem of separating the two doctrines is solved by re-examining the doctrine of the hypostatic union of Christ in the Lutheran and Calvinist traditions. Analytical and comparative approaches to the two traditions are undertaken to clearly show the tensions that arise and the possibility of imaginatively and faithfully linking the Incarnation and the Ascension. The study of these two models is furthered by comparing the two contemporary responses of the two traditions, one by Thomas Torrance and another by Niels Gregersen, that results in two ways of understanding Ascension, both as a reversal and as an extension.

Abstract

This saying is perhaps trustworthy, “Of writing many books on the election, there is no end.” So why another book on this topic? What’s the payoff(s)? One apparent reason is the contentious nature of the idea of election itself, and so no one has written conclusively on this particular issue, as witnessed throughout the history of Christianity. As a contribution to the Reformed, Exegetical, and Doctrinal Studies (REDS) Series, Cornelis Venema believes not only that it is a timely work to commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of the Synod of Dordrecht and the genesis of the Canons of Dordt, but there are also at least two other motivations for an additional reflection on the topic. First, the doctrine of election is so pervasively taught throughout Scripture, explicitly or implicitly, that it is impossible not to come across the topic as one reads both the Old and New Testament carefully. Second, the doctrine of election is essential in understanding the triune God’s initiative and role in the whole biblical drama of redemption. Venema rightly notes the two practical implications following this second point, that such doctrine would impress upon believers a life of humility as well as a life of thanksgiving and total commitment to glorify God.

Abstract

This article discusses an explorative proposal for inter-faith dialogue based on the life of Jesus amid the development of religious and tribal diversity in the city in Indonesia. The rising migration and urbanization will bring diversity to a new height in Indonesia. Hence, dialogue is a must amid the irresistible context. This proposal for dialogue will be based on Kevin J. Vanhoozer's dramatic method through the fusion of horizons which proposes how to apply biblical passages to everyday life. The reflective-explorative study of John 4:7–21 resulted in three recommendations as a form of horizon fusion in the context of ethnic and religious pluralism in the city, namely: the dialogue of reconciliation, the dialogue of friendship, and the dialogue of theology.

Abstract

The meaning of the neologism Ἑλληνιστὰι in the New Testament (Acts 6:1; 9:29; 11:20), although only three times, is not as simple as one might think. The Indonesian Bible (TB, BIMK) defines its first two usages as linguistic differences (“Greek-speaking Jews”). The third usage is not even clear whether it is the category of descent (“Greeks”) or religious (“non-Jewish people”). There is a tendency for Ἑλληνιστὰι to be translated non-uniformly, but there is also a uniformity. In the context of this word study, the first step is to determine Ἕλληνες as the root and origin of Ἑλληνιστὰι. Since the semantic meaning of Ἕλληνες includes Greeks by descent and Greeks culturally, the second step is to examine the consistency of the differentiation of Graeci and gentiles in the Vulgate for both Greekishness. The fact that Ἑλληνιστὰι translations are so varied makes the final step necessary, namely to reinterpret the word in its context. As a result, neologism is needed for Indonesian vocabulary: “Helenis” (or Hellenist) for cultural Ἕλληνες and “Yahudi Helenis” (or Hellenized Jews) for Ἑλληνιστὰι.

Abstract

As the church finds herself amidst ongoing disruptive changes that are exacerbated by the pandemic, the need for church leaders to reexamine the way the church operates is not merely an important necessity but an urgent priority. The purpose of this article is to outline how church leaders can recalibrate the culture of the church to align with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Drawing on insights from Organizational Leadership and Psychology research, three key features of church culture are discussed in relation to the adaptive challenges that impact the church. As practical implications for church leaders, the article proposes ten leadership imperatives to shape and nurture the gospel culture in the church.
