Abstract

Children are usually considered to maintain good behavior if they act in accordance with religious values (e.g., performing five prayers daily, fasting during the entire month of Ramadhan, being respectful and obedient to their parents, etc.). With respect to the latter (i.e., moral education), it is generally associated with tarbiyah since both aim to develop children’s noble character and proper behavior. There are, however, different ways as to how a certain group of community attempt to develop such character and behavior among children. People living in Bagon Kedung Sumur, for instance, have long carried out moral education for their younger generation by developing and reinforcing behaviors that appear to conform their religious beliefs (e.g., nurturing noble dispositions, requiring five prayers and other religious practices as well as sharpening children’s intellectual and social quotient). The goal of these efforts are to enable children to develop behavior that conforms with the community’s religious beliefs and set of values, all of which are deemed critical as a basis for children to act properly and acceptably within their community. Abstract

In this modern era, there has been a significant progress in instructional methods as a result of creativity and innovation, one of which is indicated in the development of hypnoteaching. Applying the structural equation modelling through path analysis, this study aims to investigate whether there is a significant influence of hypnoteaching on both learning activities and outcomes of al-Islam unit. The study was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember with three hypotheses. The results of that data analysis show the chi-square value of 88.25, p-value of 0.44, and RMSEA of 0.021, indicating: 1. here is a significant effect of hypnoteaching on learning activities. 2. There is a significant effect of learning activities on student learning outcomes 3. There is not a statistically significant effect of hypnoteaching on student learning outcomes Based on these results, it may be concluded that hypnoteaching can increase student learning activities and impact on student learning outcomes. However, hypnoteaching cannot directly affect the improvement of student learning outcomes. Keywords: hypnoteaching, learning activities, learning outcomes

Abstract

Education is a conscious and planned effort to create both conducive atmosphere and process of learning so that learners can actively develop their potentials. These potentials include, for instance, developing their sense of spirituality, religiosity, self-control, noble character and skills all of which are profoundly needed by the learners themselves as well as by their society and country. The 9-year compulsory education is a program from the government to address the needs and challenges that await all individuals in the future. According to the national act no. 20/2003, the government seeks to improve the standard of the people’s life by requiring all Indonesian citizens of 7-12 as well as 12-15 years old to finish primary education with a 6 year program in elementary school and with 3 year program in junior high school. Nonetheless, without parental support it is hard to put such a program into practice. The support, however, may substantially influenced by the perceptions and beliefs of the parents regarding the importance of education. This is mostly the case in Jember regency whose community are mostly peasant. To unravel this issue, therefore, this study was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Wuluhan whose students largely are from peasant community. More specifically, this study aimed to explore the perceptions and beliefs of students’ parents about the importance of education for their children. This study employed a case study methodology with the data obtained through interviews. The findings suggest that the students’ parents consider education is highly important for their children. The data analysis technique is done in three ways: data reduction, data serving (display), and inferencing. The validity of the data obtained was ensured through referential sufficiency and triangulation to espouse the criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability.
