Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern and considered as a condition that leads to increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. The prevalence of diabetes in Yemen has been recently increased. The aim of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of health care professionals towards diabetes (HCPs) care in Mukalla , Yemen . The cross sectional study was conducted among health care professionals in Mukalla city, Yemen. The diabetes attitudes questionnaire was administered to 73 health care professionals (Doctors , pharmacists and nurses ) in Mukalla , Yemen in  2009. The data were analyzed descriptively and the inferential Kruskal -Wallis test was also used.  This study found that healthcare professionals have relatively adequate attitudes toward diabetes. Doctors have higher attitudes score toward the seriousness of diabetes than other healthcare professional groups (pharmacists and nurses), and nurses showed the lowest attitude score among healthcare professional groups. Therefore, nurses and pharmacists should receive more education programmes regarding diabetes care. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijphs.v2i4.3842

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to determine the acute toxicity of chlorantraniliprole insecticide to the fresh water fish Labeo rohita. Environmental protection has attracted the attention of the wide cross-section of people all over the world which has now become a global issue amongst scientists and researchers working in this area. Experimental fish were exposed to different concentrations of chlorantraniliprole between range 0, 1, 2,34,5,6,8,10,12 and 13mg/L-1) for 96 hrs in test container. The 96hrs LC50 value of chlorantraniliprole (Coragen) on the fish was found to be 12.7mg/L-1. The variation in the LC values is due to its dependence upon various factors viz., sensitivity to the toxicant, its concentration and duration of exposure. Further study needs the processes by which these chemicals affect physiology and pathological changes and of fish and their bio-concentration and bio- accumulation in fish tissues.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijphs.v2i4.4208

Abstract

There are 40% (3 billion) of the world's population at risk of suffering from malaria with the addition of some 300-500 million cases and 1.5 to 1.7 million people died from suffering from malaria. In Indonesia to date, infectious disease, especially diseases that are transmitted by animals, especially insects, are still a public health problem. This study aimed to determine the role of the community in the prevention, control and eradication of malaria. This research was a qualitative study. Subjects of the study were public, community leaders, and health care providers. Data were analyzed by using content analysis and theory validation source. Community participation in malaria vector control through several ways to eradicate mosquito breeding, usage of mosquito nets, use of insect repellent, avoiding a night out and a survey of patients who return from leave. The community plays an active role in malaria vector control efforts by closing puddles, community service every week, and some people are already using nets.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijphs.v2i4.5540

Abstract

Uzbekistan has been conducting the pioneering health care reform activities for the last 15 years. One of the main aims of the reform was creating accessible and quality primary health care (PHC) services. If in first years of the reform the attention was paid to prevention of infectious diseases and maternal and child health issues currently the focus has shifted to prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCD). While country has building a national stratedy to combat NCD Navoi Regional Health Administration (NOHA) has implemented a study to reveal a true frequence of NCD in region that might be applicable for whole country. The purpose of the research was to conduct basic health check-up at the 4 rural Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities in Navoi region and timely detect non - communicable diseases, with special emphasis on the diabetes mellitus. In general, the quantity of NCD increased for 1012 new (24,6%) cases. According the diabetes mellitus, it was detected that 35 people were registered as “D” category of chronic patients and received appropriate care. In the frame of the health check-up there were 24 new cases detected, the total number of patients with diabetes mellitus is 59 people. This exceeded the available rates of DM in 1,7 times. Our results are comparable with NCD situation in other countries developed and non-developed as well. There was high number of people with hidden forms and higher risks for the DM development. Mass screening of our rural population in the PHC facilities has confirmed that the global DM incidence tendencies are true for our population as wellDOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijphs.v2i4.4067

Mean overall knowledge, attitude and perception (KAP) score out of maximum possible score of 79 was found to be 62.74±7.65. Positive yet weak significant correlation was reported between knowledge and attitude (r=0.099, p=0.035) and attitude and perception (r=0.156, p=0.001). However, the significance between knowledge and perception was positive and moderate in relationship (r=.440, p=.036). The study concluded that better knowledge of Halal pharmaceuticals is associated positive perceptions and behaviours.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijphs.v2i4.4226

Abstract

Different factors such as economical, social, and cultural may have a considerable role in choosing the type of delivery. Considering the importance of women’s idea and decision in choosing the type of delivery, this study was done by purposing on explaining women’s experiences in delivery and choosing its type in a qualitative study. This was a descriptive qualitative study (phenomenology approach)  that was done by purposeful sampling on non-nulliparous pregnant women who were in the third trimester of pregnancy referred to Jahrom maternity clinics . The purposeful sampling was used for studying urban and rural pregnant women in six focus groupsincluding seven pregnant women in each   that data gathering continued to the point of data saturation and data were analyzed using content analysis. From 98 dismissed codes, two main teams and nine sub teams emerged that included their perception delivery and their cultural socioeconomic level. There were many factors affecting the selection of the type of delivery that some of them are the result of the lack of accurate information, poor education and lack of comprehensive rational and decisions regarding women’s healthcare. Therefore it is necessary to adapt appropriate strategies to improve children and mother’s health. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijphs.v2i4.3882
