Introduction: Diabetes and obesity are health problems that affect human life from health, social and economic perspective. Complications caused by diabetes are metabolic problems and lead to diabetic nephropathy. White turmeric rhizome (Curcuma zedoaria) has benefits including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, anticancer, and antimicrobial. Objective: This study is to determine the effect of white turmeric rhizome extract on blood lipids in Wistar rats with diabetic nephropathy. Methods: This research is an experimental study with post-test only control group design, and took place in Pharmacological Laboratory of Pharmacy Faculty, Histological Laboratory of Medical Faculty of Universitas Sumatera Utara and Biomolecular Laboratory of Universitas Prima Indonesia on Apirl until September 2020. Results: Wistar male white rats were divided into six groups; namely the normal control group (P1), the negative control group (P2), the positive control group (P3), and three groups treated with white turmeric each with dose of P4 = 100, P5 = 200, P6 = 400 mg / kgBW which previously induced by alloxan. Data was analyzed using One Way Anova test, which has significance in group given 100 mg/BW white turmeric extract. Conclusions: In conclusion, white turmeric extract can be used to stabilize serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in diabetic nephropathy rats.

Abstract

Introduction: Pneumonia causes morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Pediatric patients with complicated pneumonia have a poor prognosis and are more at risk of death. Objective To identify risk factors for complications in pediatric patients with pneumonia. Method: This research was a case-control study, involving children with pneumonia aged 1-59 months in Dr. Soetomo in 2016-2020. The sample was divided into two groups. Patients who had complications at first admission were classified as a case group. Whereas patients without complications at first admission were classified as a control group. Samples for the case group were obtained by using total sampling method, while the control group employed random sampling technique. Data were collected from medical records and analyzed by chi-square test. Result: A total of 44 case group samples and 53 control group samples were involved during this study. Among investigated variables, male gender (OR=2,842; 95% CI, 1,24-6,49) and anemia (OR=3,283; 95% CI, 1,26-8,49) might increase the risk of complicated pneumonia. Meanwhile other variables, namely age, comorbidities, birth weight, malnutrition, and immunization status did not have a significant relationship with the incidence of complications in pneumonia patients. Conclusion: Male gender and anemia are risk of complicated pneumonia.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: There has been a decrease in access to antiretroviral (ARV) services due to concerns of PLHIV infected with COVID-19, recommendations for quarantine by the government and health facility functions that are focused on dealing with the COVID-19 emergency. This study aims to determine the relationship between social factors of people living with HIV/AIDS and access to ARV services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kediri Regency/City. Method: This study used a cross-sectional design with 107 respondents. Variables of social factors are relationship status, social support, residence status and peer community participation. The variable of access to ARV services is the act of visiting ARV services independently during a pandemic. Data were collected used snowball sampling techniques by online questionnaires and analyzed by chi-square test. Result: The majority of the respondents were 26-35 years old (57.9%), male (56.1%), and heterosexual (74.8%). Variables that had a significant relationship with access to ARV services included relationship status (p <0.05), social support (p <0.05), and residence status (p <0.05). Meanwhile, no significant relationship was found between the peer community participation variable and access to ARV services (p = 0.69). Conclusion: There was a relationship between social factors including relationship status, social support, and residence status of people living with HIV/AIDS with access to ARV services during the pandemic. It is necessary to engage and strengthen the social role of the community, especially families, by providing training and education related to understanding about HIV/AIDS, the needs and motivations of PLWHA

Abstract

Laringectomee may have problems on their lung compliance as a result of the diaphragm’s increasing resistance. These can cause an increase on CO2 end-tidal. Non-invasive ventilator (NIV) is theorized to improve lung compliance with the end result on CO2 end-tidal correction. This case series was made to report the effect of NIV on several lung function parameters. Three cases of laringectomees were reported. Each history, present complain was noted. Diaphragm movement at inspiration and expiration were measured using ultrasonography. Peak huff flow and CO2 end tidal were also measure before and after NIV. All patients showed improvement on diaphragm movement and CO2 end tidal. One patient showed a decrease on his peak huff flow measurement. Clinically NIV showed a good result on diaphragm compliance and CO2 end-tidal. Effect of NIV on peak huff flow was not consistent in this case series. A clinical trial with sufficient numbers of patients and a proper method is needed to give evidence whether NIV can provide significant positive effect for laringectomees.
