Gadjah Mada Journal of Tourism Studies is an Indonesian Tourism Journal published periodically by Tourism Studies Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada focusing specifically on the Indonesian tourism studies. The Gadjah Mada Journal of Tourism Studies seeks to advance the field by examining economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects of Indonesian tourism studies at a number of scales. The journal welcomes research reports, conceptual works, empirical studies, theoretical application and book reviews particularly where it supports the development of Indonesian tourism studies through enabling more critical approach of new ideas and concept. While the focus of the journal is related to tourism studies field, the journal also consider other scientific articles that examine tourism from other disciplines perspectives such as anthropology, archaelogy, economic, political science, biology, philosphy, psychology, etc. More specifically, the journal will consider articles with issue investigation related to community development, tourism typologies, ecotourism, rural tourism, hospitality and tourism industry, marketing studies, risk management, accreditation scheme and policy, environmental sustainability, protected areas, cultural studies, heritage studies management, interpretation, politics of tourism, poverty alleviation, gender studies, education and issue of justice and peace through tourism.

Abstract

Tourism industry utilizes heritage as a tourist attraction. Not only the physical existences, but also the meaning of its heritage, particularly its narrations, are used to gain profit for tourism industry. Lawang Sewu located in Semarang, Indonesia is one heritage which is used by PT KeretaApi Indonesia (PT KAI) as a heritage tourism attraction. This research analyses many meanings or narrations of Lawang Sewu as a heritage tourism attraction. This research has three objectives. First, it aims to identify the meaning of BPCB Central Java, PT KAI, local people, tour guides and tourist interpretations of Lawang Sewu. Second, it aims to discover which stakeholder dominates the narrations presented in Lawang Sewu. Third, it seeks to understand how the dominant stakeholder can govern the narrations. This research is a qualitative research with inductive reasoning. Through the use of interactive analysis model as the data analysis method and hermeneutics approach to draw the conclusion, this research finds that each stakeholder construes the meaning of Lawang Sewu differently. Among the interpretations, PT KAI is the dominant stakeholder found in the presentation of Lawang Sewu to tourists.

Abstract

Morotai tourism destination is located in North Molucas Province and directly bordering with Philippines. Morotai tourism destination is one of the ten national priority tourism destination of the Republic Indonesia. Kabupaten Pulau Morotai also has one area that is used as a Special Economic Zone based on the development of tourism industry. Tourism development in this region involves many institutions, both from the government sector and from the private sector. This research was proposed to nd out about: (1) Fnding out about the role of public and private sector in the development of Morotai tourism destination, (2) Finding out the impact of all programs which run by all sector for the Morotai tourism destination area. This study uses a qualitative approach with primary data collection using data collection techniques of observation, interviews, and institutional surveys to be able to explore the phenomena that occur at the research location. Interview respondents were determined based on purposive sampling with the selection of respondents based on their respective capacities in the development of tourism destination in Kabupaten Pulau Morotai and supported by secondary data that was deemed appropriate to the research context. Data analysis techniques used descriptive analysis techniques to see sharper phenomena. This study produces the following ndings: (1) At present Central Government still dominates the course of destination development programs in Kabupaten Pulau Morotai, 2) One of the main impacts that occur is the improvement of infrastructure that supports tourism activities in Kabupaten Pulau Morotai. This condition shows that the Morotai Tourism Destinations have potential chance to become the core of tourism industry in North Moluccas Province.

Abstract

This research aimed to understand resident’s attitudes toward women participation in tourism businesses especially understanding potential impacts-based Women Owned and Operated Tourism Businesses (WOOTB) measurement. This research is being held in Pancoh Ecotourism Village, Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia. WOOTB measurement created by Beedle (2011) through quantitative method. WOOTB is measured by six components. The components are tourism impact, tourism enhancement, economic enhancement, capacity building, community structure, and tourist contact. This measurement will seek for total score of each items from six components of WOOTB interpreted by scale that have been done by Umar (2001). By collecting the data from 100 residents from 15 – 64 years old, both who are involved and non-involved in tourism activities in Pancoh Ecotourism Village, the result shows that there are di erent attitudes from the residents. The di erence shown from the average of total score in tourism impact component, economic enhancement component, and community structure component. Other than that, there is a similarity from the component of capacity building and tourism enhancement that revealed both high average to the statement by involved and non-involved residents. Meanwhile, in the component of tourism contact about “Women owned businesses in Pancoh would result in too much contact between local women and foreign tourists” revealed a low average to the statement both from involved and non-involved residents in Pancoh Ecotourism Village.

Abstract

Tourism has involved the local communities as a key stakeholders in many tourism destination in Indonesia that are growing due to the phenomenon of digital tourism. In Tebing Breksi Yogyakarta, the growth of tourism sector as a result of the digital tourism phenomenon has made the local people relying on tourism as the main sector to ful l economic needs after the mining ban from the local government. This research conduct the SUSTDI (Stakeholder Understanding of Sustainable Tourism Development Index) method as a tool to asses level of understanding of local communities about sustainable tourism concepts. According to Timur & Getz (2009: 223) about the theory of key stakeholder role, three groups of local community has identi ed such as: host community group, local authority group and tourism industry group. The proportional sampling and strati ed random sampling conducted to determined the amount of representative respondent. The result showed that the local communities as the key stakeholder in Tebing Breksi have a high overall level of understanding about the sustainable tourism concept at the scale 4,19 out of 5,00. Despite of that, the level of understanding on the three of the group respondent on question number 23 implies that the “economic development funds should to be used to promote tourism” as “Medium”. Moreover, tourism planner can use this results to develop a precise education and training program to improve their knowledge about sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

Panenjoan is one of the tourist destinations located within the Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu. This destination is located in the village of Tamanjaya, Ciemas District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java. Since the area was established as part of the Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu, an increasing number of tourists visit continues to happen every year. Negative e ects can occur if the destination is not ready in accepting such a surge, especially environmental aspects. Therefore, the study aims to formulate a development strategy for Panenjoan view point based on the concept of responsible tourism that focused on environmental aspects. This research uses qualitative research methods with data derived from the results of focused group discussion or FGD, the eld observation, and the study of the literature. Data analysis was done with the SWOT analysis and the results obtained are then elaborated in descriptive. The results obtained from this research is based on a matrix of IFAS and EFAS can note that the position of the internal and external Point of view Panenjoan tend to be weak and threatened with a score each amounting to 2.15 and 2.28. To address and minimize such threats and weaknesses, has drawn up recommendations that focus on environmental aspects of responsible tourism i.e. (1) conserving water aspect consisting of organic mulch-making training, partnership with agencies in the procurement of electronic water meter, increasing public awareness in conservation of water, and the involvement of travelers in the preservation of water. (2) The aspect of using energy e ciently which consists of working with agencies to procure light Light Emitting Diode (LED) as well as in the regular maintenance of electronic tools, and installation of the light sensor. (3) Reducing and managing waste aspect, namely waste management training, digitalization of information contents, procurement of simple recycling facility, and the separating wastes speci cally.
